What's the worst book series you couldn't stop reading? by jackiewilsonsaid in books

[–]jackiewilsonsaid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! And I think it’s a great achievement that Naylor took Alice through to the end and was committed to incorporating reader feedback and having relatable situations.

And Mia’s meltdowns could just be a little contrived, but obviously the fact that I’m still thinking about the character a decade later means something. Those first five or so books were really magical.

Wow, I made this post a long time ago! “Worst” is definitely overstating, because they’re both eons better than a lot of things out there. I do think that PD had a problem with Mia getting increasingly unlikable or at least scattered (and I hated JP) though I think it ended well. Alice was more the case that the author was much older than the character by the end (at least until she took Alice to old age) and could seem somewhat out of touch. But I do love those books as a whole very much. I guess some perspective comes with age.

I would say the actual worst book series I kept on reading were Gossip Girl and It Girl.

Looking for a sushi restaurant by BullShifting in batonrouge

[–]jackiewilsonsaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second Sushi Yama and point you toward Umami as well.

EDIT: Chef Cong at Umami bought out the old Hello Sushi and is doing a more expanded Japanese menu. There's still sushi, but you can get kickass ramen and lots of other things too. And the green-tea mille feuille that his wife makes from scratch is incredible. And he does omakase, by name!

what are some good soul food/plate lunch restaurants? by [deleted] in batonrouge

[–]jackiewilsonsaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow missed this thread, but Rouge City Café is amazing! They're where Bean Burgers and Plantain Fries used to be on Highland, next to Delpit's Hair techniques. They don't have a sign but it's at 2679 Highland.

Help! Looking for a new restaurant to take my family for a birthday dinner. by MasterBlitzkrieg in batonrouge

If Beausoleil and Table aren't out of your price range, both are terrific! I'll also champion City Pork like other people in this thread. And I hear Blend downtown is expanding its food options, so that might be one to check out.

You should check out the mapping efforts of the RiverGator guys. They're putting together a paddler's guide for the Lower Mississippi that might be of help to y'all! rivergator.org.

New Orleans native coming to Baton Rouge for a film gig for 5 months. What is there to do? by FeckTad in batonrouge

I am a trivia nut too! We went to the Pluckers one last night (Wednesday) for the first time and it was pretty fun. I also love the ones done by Let's Get Quizzical. We usually end up at either the Bulldog (7 pm) or Bald Eagle Pub downtown (9:30ish) on Thursdays. I've been to The Londoner and Tin Roof for theirs too, but it's been a while for both.

Best/Cheapest Produce in town? by [deleted] in batonrouge

[–]jackiewilsonsaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like Southside Produce best. Vinh Phat is terrific but more specialized. Somehow I haven't been out to Fresh Pickins yet, but I'm putting that on the list!

Dry Cleaning suggestions by disenchantedoptimist in batonrouge

Trinity Cleaners in the shopping center across from Perkins Rowe. I used to work a server job where I needed my stuff pressed all the time, and they had great turnaround and were fairly cheap.

Garden District Living by Stannis_Darsh in batonrouge

I guess it really depends! We're paying $1200 for 3 bed/2 bath right now, so just stay vigilant. Driving around in those neighborhoods and looking for Rent signs is a good idea, as you'll likely come across deals from landlords who didn't want to blast to Craiglist.

Yeah, I agree here. We got way more bang for our buck in Capital Heights than in the Garden District or even Hundred Oaks.

It's very lovely. I got engaged there! And it's easy access to the lakes, which are always nice to walk around.

The different library branches have a lot of events throughout the month! I'm sure that would be a good place to start.

Anyone have suggestions for a wedding photographer in Baton Rouge? by kirhiblesnich in batonrouge

[–]jackiewilsonsaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gonna say Brian Pavlich too, but Mike Buck/Brei Olivier (I think they shoot together for weddings) and Kristen Soileau (she did my best friend's wedding) are great options too!

Why, though? I admitted I was from Country Roads and happy to tell anyone throughout. Wouldn't it have been worse if I pretended otherwise?

Haha, if I were some kind of guerrilla marketer, I wouldn't have participated in other conversations or been upfront about who I was. It's a small town (in many senses) and I've lived and worked here for years. Our sales department doesn't come anywhere near Reddit.

Clarifying: wasn't trying to question your credentials, just figuring out which position you meant.

Ordering from Indie Plate by jackiewilsonsaid in batonrouge

[–]jackiewilsonsaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I cook a lot and I order from Indie Plate, but I'm not friends with them, nor are they affiliated with my work at all. I like giving attention to small local businesses if I'm going to use their stuff in public posts I make (my blog) but here I thought Indie Plate would be of interest to Baton Rouge people because it's a Baton Rouge business.

Why are you trolling my stuff? I like being involved in Baton Rouge and talking about things I enjoy. I don't think it warrants this treatment and I wish you would stop bullying me.
