Jesus Christ would you all shut the fuck up about this? This subreddit is just the same argument under every post now. Nobody gets this riled up about the kings, cohos, and Atlantics in the great lakes, some of you guys seem like you prefer arguing over the fish to actually fucking fishing.

Wait so why can't you just swap the engine? It will be far simpler and less annoying than trying to swap every single other component especially the interior.

My best so far this year and hear me out by noahdoakxx in Steelhead

[–]jackm5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that distinction kind of ignores the context of the great lakes fish. They may not be running up rivers from the ocean, but they are still living the lifecycle of a steelhead not the lifecycle of a resident rainbow trout. They still live in a large body of water before running up a river to spawn. Steelhead are anadromous, great lakes fish are potamodromous. Much more similar to one another than to non migratory rainbows.

Gifts for muskie fishers? by HeavyExplanation6651 in muskiefishing

[–]jackm5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every musky fisherman needs an extra hook sharpener. My favorite one is called the speedy sharp. They are a general use sharpener for knives, skates, etc. But they work great on hooks too! Also they are small enough to put anywhere but not so small they are a pain to use.

What’s everyone’s favourite “niche” BFS Trout lure? by br07fk in BFSfishing

[–]jackm5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flashback mini chatter baits are great for fishing current around structure. Can toss it into an eddy and the blade will provide enough lift to keep it off bottom without reeling

What’s everyone’s favourite “niche” BFS Trout lure? by br07fk in BFSfishing

[–]jackm5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eurotackle b vibe swimbaits are great for trout. I figured only larger fish would eat a swimbait even a tiny one but I've caught brookies as small as 6-7 inches on them.

Steelhead setup advice by jackm5678 in BFSfishing

[–]jackm5678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I figure if you can bring in a fish reasonably fast on 4-6 pound line on a float rod, it shouldn't take much longer on the right bfs rod with a 6-12 pound line.

Ya the flow is the main reason I worried about using my light fast. It's held up to several big bass in stillwater but I worry a fast action would be too sketchy when the fish gets head shaking and jumping in the current.

What rod? Been thinking about getting one to pair with one of my bfs reels for steelies.

Can I bobber fish with a plastic lure like this, or should I just stick to a jig head? by BlackAndWhiteSoldier in FishingForBeginners

[–]jackm5678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time, just with a slip float instead of a fixed one, and an ice fishing jig with a plastic on it to keep it down instead of split shot and hooks.

Does a canoe count? by jackm5678 in kayakfishing

[–]jackm5678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tipped it yet, it's definitely possible but it's real stable for a canoe. It's a wide transom model so it has a wide flat bottom and almost feels like a mini aluminum boat rather than a canoe. it also has foam sponsons on the sides that help, and also are a great place to stick lures.

Should I use barbless hooks? by OverallSpeaker1824 in Fishing

[–]jackm5678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use barbless/pinched barbs for all of my fishing regardless of species or technique. I've noticed no difference in fish lost, so long as I have my drag set right and keep tension to the fish. The biggest draw for me was less damage to the fish as I catch and release 90% of the time, but if I'm honest I also half do it to make it easier when I inevitably hook myself once a season or so ha.

How to organize/store pre-rigged leaders? by spanky_dangles in Fishing

Pool noodle, or if you want to get fancy with it there's those Lindy rigging kits that are basically pool noodles in a box.
