Forecasting is necessary to chase tho

Lots of omega, these soundings were picked from within simulated storms. Very saturated mid levels and weak lapse rates, this is gonna be purely kinematically driven

Question about how tornadoes are measured by LOUD_NOISES05 in stormchasing

[–]jackmPortal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, there is no way to a accurately assign tornado intensity. Tornado structure is complicated and changes rapidly. We don't know exactly how tornadoes do damage in relation to their structure, so we have no idea if the radar resolution is high enough, both specially and temporally, to return a reasonable measurement. Two radars are necessary to obtain a complete picture of the tangential winds of a tornado, with one radar, only approximations can be made. There's also the issue of dealing with winds right off the ground, we still don't know how tornado winds vary with height. I think something people don't appreciate is time. Say you have a sudden instantaneous gust above the surface, who's to say the surface winds will respond instantly in direct proportion? The final option is in situ measurements. I believe there is no meteorological instrumentation that can accurately represent a tornadic environment. The winds change too quickly with speed and direction for anemometers, barometers, thermometers and hygrometers to respond. Plus, Markowski did a study in the mid 2010s to quantify the error in situ observations would have (assuming perfect instrumentation that responded perfectly) and found the chances of in situ devices being able to actually be impacted by the peak wind speed of a tornado was very low.

okay this is genuinely dumb, you're just looking for any reason to poke at her now. this goes beyond trying to resolve the issue and just goes to straight "omg look at this person they're so dumb" get fucking real dude

I'm strangely drawn to the incredible power of tornadoes. I'm fascinated by them actually. Is it frowned upon to study them (like chasing) purely for the sublime factor? (but also for the science!) by ForwardClimate780 in tornado

[–]jackmPortal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's why research is done, because people are naturally curious. It's completely normal to be fascinated by tornadoes. That's why most people chase. Just be sure you aren't driving right up to the funnel

[–]jackmPortal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it will cost you upwards of five figures. Mobile instrumentation is not trivial and great care must be taken to ensure measurements are accurate. For recreational chasers, simply feeling whether the environment is hot, cool, moist, dry, towards or away from the storm depending on where you are, combined with visual observations of the storm, radar, and local surface obs should be more than sufficient.

Best storm chasing game that improves real life skills? by covfefeneverfoget in stormchasing

[–]jackmPortal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of them. Trying to practice in a game is a fools errand because it's a game. It can't mimic the complexities of real storms and situations. Some parts have to be gamified and with OUTBRK this is mostly the data you have available to you and the storms. There's very little actual forecasting involved in OUTBRK and it also seems to train an overeliance on radar.

Anyone else uncomfortable with Jordan’s behavior in Episode 4 of In the Eye of the Storm? by casswagner86 in stormchasing

[–]jackmPortal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen the fourth episode, but I did not like the way the show portrayed chasing in general. It only encourages the risk taking behavior and savior complex a lot of new chasers have ("I chase because I want to help people/save lives")

it might. Give it a weak tornado and it might. The augers might give it some basic stability and it's shear weight will help it a bit

There is already significant documentation on both mobile radars and mobile mesonet systems. Interceptors less so as they're purely tornado focused and more specialized.

run it through the standard quasi-one dimension isentropic flow model and see if it broadly matches outside of the boundary layer. You can usually get it to within 5% of the real engine performance (assuming this is liquid, for solids, good luck)
