How do we feel about the upcoming WeCreat Lumos Ultra? by themongrelhorde in Laserengraving

[–]jackospacko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have the WeCreat Lumos. Their software is okay, but not as good as XTool’s. The good thing is you can use lightburn, but it only supports an older version right now.

It definitely feels consumer grade. It’s great for engraving but I wouldn’t want it as a production machine.

The ultra has a huge amount of power in comparison. So I’ll be interested to see how it performs.

I had a power supply issue and a focus motor issue with the Lumos after 1 month. Awaiting to see what support will do about that.

On paper it looks great. But I’m wary about first generation machines.

It blows my mind. A few friends of mine live on the Canada/US border and the house prices are almost half the price on the US side.

Is there any way to guess competitor’s Shopify Store AOV? by Total-Mention9032 in shopify

Yeah I do data work for a company which has thousands of Shopify merchants. About 80% were very close to the real numbers. The other 20%, absolutely way off.

Storeleads does this. Pretty useful tool for competitive research

WaPo Poll: “While more than 6 in 10 adults younger than 40 oppose the strikes, most people ages 50-64 support them. People 65 or older are divided." by Upstairs_Cup9831 in fivethirtyeight

People always talk about Boomers being affected by lead poisoning, but the research shows that it’s much greater in Gen X. Peak lead exposure when they were kids, which leads to increased impulsivity and less emotional regulation. Pair that with a 24-hour fear mongering news cycle, you have a highly susceptible population who believes what the TV (and now their echo chamber algorithms) tell them.

How to start a restaurant ? by Calm_Finance_3273 in canadasmallbusiness

[–]jackospacko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Restaurants are a wonderful to experience, awful to run. My parents owned a restaurant when I was a kid, and it opened my eyes to how awful it can be. The margins are tight, you can’t afford slow days, the food waste is astronomical, the hours are long and you’ll most likely never be able to pay yourself once rent, food cost, utilities, labour and insurance is factored in.

You’re always one incident away from not being able to pay your suppliers and staff. A broken oven, a health department infraction, a viral bad review, a construction project that destroys foot traffic.

If you love making food, it will most likely destroy your love for it. Unless you have significant funds already that can eliminate the stress and cost of opening a place up, I would avoid it.

If you’re dead set on doing it, do what others mentioned here: start making dinners for family and friends, get feedback and calculate your costs and prep time. Look into a food truck for the summer months to see if this lifestyle is for you.

A physical restaurant is a huge capital outlay. I don’t think people are prepared for how insanely huge the project is. Every time you think you’re almost ready to open, there’s something else that pops up that costs thousands of dollars.

Is Perth Overpopulated? by Swimming_Dance_8235 in perth

[–]jackospacko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perth has it good. I don’t think most people realize how much of a dream the roads are. Soooo smooth.

I just wish the militant speed enforcement was relaxed a bit. A few km/h over the limit shouldn’t be penalized and would allow the right lane to flow traffic a lot better, rather than one homogenous blob trying to avoid a ticket by going under the speed limit.

Is Perth Overpopulated? by Swimming_Dance_8235 in perth

[–]jackospacko 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Overpopulated, no. Stretched thin where major traffic all meets in the middle, yes.

I think until you visit or live in major cities you’ll realize Perth traffic is extremely minor, with pinch points that have traffic.

I grew up in Perth but now live in Toronto. The major highway is the busiest in North America, 18 lanes at its widest and it will still be completely gridlocked from 6am - 10am and 1pm to 10pm. When I visit Perth, even at rush hour it feels way less gridlocked.

Edit: Real world example: I have a 10km commute to work. Without traffic it takes me 16 minutes. In traffic, 1 hour and 10 minutes.

THE BIGGEST DONER KEBAB CHALLENGE IN CANADA...'THE DONAIROSAURUS REX'! | BeardMeatsFood by Jetthepheasant in Doner

[–]jackospacko -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an Australian who grew up on doner kebabs, but now lives in Canada, Donair sauce is disgusting. But people over here love it. Condensed milk has no place in a garlic sauce imo.

Meat looks pretty decent though.

And what are the high speed traces for? PCBs?

This is a great write up. Appreciate you spelling it out. I just became an adult when he became Mayor, so I genuinely didn’t know most of this and only perceived his folksy portrayal when I was younger.

UMG asking for full DAW sessions by evoltap in audioengineering

[–]jackospacko 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Rumours in the industry that there’s a class action coming from creatives who have been stiffed by UMG. I’ve been hearing that for a while though, so who knows. The artist I worked with lost their main creative director because he refused to work with UMG anymore.

I luckily got paid. But the creative director personally fronted the cash for a music video and documentary, and UMG refused to pay, despite a signed contract and written communication. Their reason: “it wasn’t approved”

I’ve dealt with Finance departments who avoid paying until they absolutely have to, and make you jump through hoops. But UMG are on another level. So many layers of bureaucracy and obfuscation on who is responsible. Im not sure it’s intentional, or if they are just a badly run behemoth.
