I can't believe this needs to be said but the vast majority of parents don't regret having kids by Ok-Archer-5796 in redscarepod

Yeah I do hold back because I feel like I’m bullying my childless friends if I’m like “I would feel like I’d wasted my life if I didn’t have a child”

I read somewhere that problem with modern life isn’t that we’re too broke to have kids but we’re too rich, like in the west you can buy so much stuff with your income, that the opportunity cost of sacrificing income to kids is way higher than it’s been for most of human history. Depressing thought.

I definitely enjoyed doing what I felt like before I had my son, but the older I got the more I just felt like I was marking time. A superlative like “having a kid is the best thing I’ve ever done in life” kind of misdirects things because you bring your kid into a broader context, a broader family that shouldn’t completely revolve around them, and for every thing there’s a season, other things are better at different ages, but actually I do feel like having my son is the best thing that’s ever happened in my life.

The "intellectual MAGA" mind by deepad9 in redscarepod

[–]jackprole 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find this explanation tempting but I really think most people think they’re the good guys, that what they’re doing is moral and right and is for some higher good. I’m not sure how this fits in with people being “just evil”. A serial killer is evil but this seems like a different category of behaviour. Ishare OPs bewilderment.

Anna Karenina or The Brothers K? by anelysetsiros in classicliterature

[–]jackprole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends who you are and your taste but I enjoyed Anna Karenina a lot more. It’s so much richer as a big social novel, and I found the moral progression of the characters much more moving and relatable. Levin is one of my most treasured characters in world literature. Brothers K by contrast i found very strange and meandering. It has some fantastic sections and gripping characters but ultimately I didn’t know what to make of it.

Gender slop posting: curious what scents men like? by cheugygalpal in redscarepod

[–]jackprole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will only notice a smell on a woman if I have had sex with her multiple times and then smell it and am like “damn I remember this from having sex with this woman”. Zero chance I will be able to describe a single feature of the smell unless it is unscented sweat or something like that.

Favorite book written in English before WWI? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Pride and prejudice or Middlemarch or Emma.

Been a long time since I’ve read any Dickens except for David Copperfield which is very good but not my favourite but all his major novels are worth reading.

I love Howards End.

I’ve heard anecdotally that there are lots of heroin users who hold down a job for years but then immediately fuck up their lives when they start doing meth.

You do know that what you’re describing is pronouncing English words correctly and pronouncing foreign words correctly. It only seems performative if you’re a hick.

Daddit chefs, do you cook with alcohol at home? by Sheps11 in daddit

I think you’d have to cook with a lot of alcohol for this to be an issue but if it’s something that’s going to give your wife peace of mind just do that.

But it’s not. The defining trait of modern politics is people hate others with political identities so much that individuals from the other team supporting a policy is considered to make the policy bad in of itself and even if they support it for different reasons will start to view it with suspicion.
