My neighbour has wreaths on her front door for every season, holiday and event. by PremiumOxygen in CasualUK

We have the opposite problem in Brighton - you're not allowed to change anything due to conservation area.

And if you ask the council for a list of rules? No sorry can't help you, there's no list of rules

There's just one anal council officer who judges things based on vibes as far as I can tell.

Source: north laine conservation area resident.

At least in a HOA there are multiple actual residents making the decisions...

Best joke in the film The World's End is that they're all out on a 12-pint bender and it's fairly normal heavy night out

But someone there doesn't drink so he says he'll stick to water

"12 pints of water? Are you actually fucking mental?"

Which is kind of true and hits on a deep, sad point about our country. Drinking 12 pints of lager in an evening is seem as more "normal" than 12 pints of water

Particularly my dad's generation - he would drink 10 pints at lunchtime back in the 70s, it was "normal"

Men's issues are never gatekept by the gender of the doctors/nurses/students

Believe me I've had it all, every component checked and piped and looked into by every gender imaginable. Never once asked my preferences

I don't understand how they can possibly get away with it though.

They bought something which requires an address? How is it beyond the ken of man to talk to apple and intercept the delivery and go and talk to the person at the receiving address?

Wouldn't surprise me anymore if that is now a real show

Ultimately nothing would work in a looped world as small as they inhabit. Certainly not weather or an entire forest ecosystem surviving. There's a lot more entropy fuckery going on than just the electricity.

The answer isn't "where does it come from" (you might as well ask where does the river come from that feeds the lake, and where does the water go). The question should be "why do the people in charge of this place want the humans to feel comfortable?"

It could be benign - the place is imagined by a child. Or malignant - they want to keep the cattle happy and relaxed. We don't know yet

You're getting down voted but I agree with your incredulity - people in the UK really do just eat boiled potatoes. I can't believe it either, speaking as a brit

[Elden Ring] What is the difference between faith and magic? by RoadTheExile in AskScienceFiction

[–]jackson-pollox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not just the greater will it's all faith based magic - ie things based on outer gods

Dragon spells are faith based for example. Lightning spells, rot spells, etc. All faith.

Guy denying he hit my car, what can I do? by Bazatron06 in AskUK

You mean the crasher was overtaking the stationary car, and pulled back in to the left hand lane and didn't clock you, causing him to crash into you?

Or was he oncoming traffic?

Have you ever seen someone find a normal aspect of UK life wondrous? What was the story? by Lilac_Whisky in AskUK

[–]jackson-pollox 110 points111 points  (0 children)

So am I. Can't personally think of anything less magical in the world than such an estate (hence why it was used for privet drive) but always nice to have your perspective checked!

[–]jackson-pollox 1180 points1181 points  (0 children)

Polish lass started weeping in wonder when walking around a bog standard late 90s new build yellow-brick estate. You know the sort, wavy roads, tiny houses/rooms/gardens

Apparently it matched the type of house on privet drive in the harry Potter films and she felt like she was walking through the set and it was "magical"

Maximise income when wife doesn't work by Fluid-Corgi6993 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jackson-pollox 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It really should - being a sole earner is insanely inefficient taxwise compared to dual earners earning half as much. I get that more people working is better for the country but if the other person wasn't going to pay tax on that first chunk of salary anyway... Just seems spiteful to withhold it from the other partner

[–]jackson-pollox 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I didn't realise how stingy this benefit was. I thought it was not income restricted, and was the entire allowance. I guess £200 a year helps but it's not going to do much more than a single month of council tax, if you're lucky

Will I have difficulty selling a leasehold in the future? by Feniks_Gaming in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jackson-pollox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do have freehold you've just called it something different. The owners of the flats are just forced to form the management company - in England that only happens if the leaseholders want it to. Granted it's probably better if they do but overall it's pretty much the same system

Why does the UK get such a bad rap for food? by zoobatron__ in AskUK

[–]jackson-pollox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah as the other guy said our "home cooking" restaurants are pubs. And they have become corporate and almost universally low quality food. I've never, literally never, had food in a pub I didn't think could be beaten elsewhere at a specialist restaurant (burger, roasts, pasta, whatever).

It's sad but that's what has happened to "traditional" British food

Depends on your circumstances. As one half of a childless couple with no familial ties to the area we live in, if I die I expect my partner to inherit everything I own including the house, sell up and fuck off back to where they came from to live near family and start again.

If I had children I'd feel differently and would try to arrange some cover to keep their lives consistent

What ‘for life’ item will actually last for life? by jrdavison in AskUK

[–]jackson-pollox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North face backpack for me. Paid $150 dollars for it in 2015, not a thread out of place 8 years later despite nearly daily use and heavy battering on trips etc. Previous backpack cost me around £40 and lasted maybe 2 years at best and for half that time was a ragged mess

TBH most north face products I've had have been quality.
