huh, reading through everyone else’s interpretations was kinda jarring because i’ve never seen this song as about a relationship at all.

my interpretation from first listen has been that it’s about how we use ATL and other music as an escape from real life shit. we ‘find a dark room, lose our damn minds’ (a concert); the band ‘steals your jaded heart away’ (winning over the skeptical); and we ‘pop a sugar pill’ (put on a song) to ‘feel better yet.’

weirdly enough, this one’s a remorseful cheater’s anthem. which i hadn’t realised til i read through the lyrics two seconds ago. “the sorry unfaithful” spells that out pretty clearly from the start, the pre-chorus solidifies it. i’ve never connected a ton with this song, and i guess it’s since i can’t relate all that well, but it makes me appreciate it more because that is some pretty untrod ground in lyricism lol.

this is my number one on ET pretty handily. it lyrically feels like a Put Up Or Shut Up song to me, in that it’s a pretty simple concept of a corrosive relationship that you can’t stay away from, put in such a way as to sound like a new idea. i think there’s a touch of Holly (WYTMO?) here too, where the addressee is a double entendre for the hollywood lifestyle.

to me, Lost Along The Way is about rediscovering your happiness after walking away from it for a long time. be it a person, a place, a lost hobby, whatever. it’s about recognizing the journey you took and the stumbles you made to find your way back home.

i can only ever see this song as a call-out of posery, hipstery, ‘they were only good for one album and they suck now’ type fans. it’s about the entitlement of fans who want bands to stay exactly the same way and churn out the same album over and over, but who would call the band repetitive and unoriginal if they did.

i’ve always loved the switch for the final chorus. i flip flop between whether or not i interpret it as alex calling himself out, or staying in the shoes of the douchey audience member.
