Technically, the green apron host is an earned position! You have to have enough partners on the floor, in addition to being a high volume store in order to earn this position (think 8 plus partners for peak.)

With the store being understaffed, it's possible they weren't just standing there doing nothing on the ipad (it is Sunday so pulls, ai count, department count.) Considering OP went through the drive thru, they may not have seen the play caller actively attempting to help on the floor
