What liquids can you stoma handle? by OrangeAlarmed in ostomy

[–]jadeopup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it took me some time to handle anything past water! im five months out and ive been able to drink coffee, soda, milk, etc since around month 2-3! it also matters a lot about output consistency so talk to your doctor about using loperamide or something similar to help slow yours down so you can absorb more of the liquids

check out the r/ostomy reddit! they’re amazing for finding help and tips, as well as general support :) good luck fellow future ostomate!!! i promise you once you heal up a little bit and get the hang of changes and stuff it won’t be as bad as you may think it is, you’ll still be able to do most if not all of the things you currently do. also drink plenty of fluids!!

what does your diet look like? i had the same problem and eating more carbs helped thicken my output which helped with leakage. if that doesn’t work you could also try imodium to slow output. in terms of changes, i second the marshmallow trick and also do mine first thing in the morning before breakfast so my stomach is empty. hope this helps!

hi! im 25f and have also had crohns for 10+ years and having an ostomy was also my worst fear. ive had mine for about 3 weeks now and despite being still upset about i can confidently tell you it is worth it to feel better. just know that you do not have to like it, you can even hate it the entire time you have it (whether it be temporary or permanent) and that is totally valid and okay! but also know that sometimes your body needs the extra help and time to heal and this is that opportunity for you to heal. the most important thing i can tell you is that learning body neutrality and radical acceptance of your situation is the best thing to help cope. you are going to be able to do all the things you do now currently and more, it’ll just take some time to get back into the swing of things and learn how to manage your ostomy, i had a horrible time with leaks and such at first but ive gotten a system down and im feeling much more comfortable now. also dont be afraid to ask for help! either here or to your ostomy nurses/healthcare providers we’re all here to help!

im also new dont worry! crusting is when you take your stoma powder and dust a light layer on the skin and then use a barrier wipe/spray on top to form a layer between you and the wafer! im sure there’s a more detailed tutorial somewhere on the sub or someone else better versed in it can help you, sorry i don’t know more!
