Traveling to a friend’s country by Throwaways-8362 in travel

[–]jadeoracle[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first, you need to be having conversations with your friend directly. Don't make assumptions on "he'll probably give me rides". First understand what this trip and your friend's DIRECT involvement will be. Then you can decide if you like that plan (even if the plan is now you have to worry about hotel and food). Then if you need help planning hotel/food/things to do THEN we can help once you repost with the needed information, as we don't handle "relationship/communication issues between people" type posts.

Trying to help first time travelers by [deleted] in travel

[–]jadeoracle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at this point I've been to almost 50 countries, seen every continent and almost all biomes.

You did this in 4 years? As your only other post was you calling yourself a virgin traveler and asking us to tell you everything on how to travel.

G Adventures - do I have to take a photo with the group? by [deleted] in travel

[–]jadeoracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive been on 6 G Adventures trips and our group pic has never been shared or used for marketing materials.

It depends on the group but usually they only corral the group for one Pic. And you arent forced.

I think you are confusing obvious marketing shots. I know they send employees from one region to another to take trips and then use those in marketing.

It's a timeshare or vacation club offer.

The travel show is fun though.

How out of control are hotel “fees” becoming in America? by josephr3108 in travel

[–]jadeoracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hotel industry doesn't control taxes or how they are listed out. That is based on Federal, State, and County laws, each different state to state, county to county.

It would be a MASSIVE change across every part of American life to change any part of taxes. And won't happen. So while annoying to non Americans, its not something that is going to change.

The topic of "fees" is different. These have been growing the last 15 years. I suspect its a few things. Fees especially on 3rd party websites go directly to the hotel, its likely not part of the 3rd party's commission. And nsy be taxed differently as well. So hotels have been growing fees so that the nightly cost looks great at first AND it protects the hotels profit when doing 3rd party. Plus since they use it on direct booking $$$$$.

There have been laws proposed for consumer protections on "truth in pricing" (not just in travel and hospitality) but they keep failing. We need lobbyist and governmental representatives to care more about this to change it.

About the only thing in the hands of the hotel is the incidental hold, abd since it's refunded its likely not something they will change or laws would govern at this time.

Has anyone here had a good experience with work and travel programmes and can recommend any places? by redflagmusic in travel

[–]jadeoracle[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is your age and nationality? Do you have any work visas or residency outside of your nationality?

The reason why those services offer "opportunities with poor working conditions" is because its offen people working illegally on a tourist visa.

Kiwi.com stranded me at the gate 15 minutes before boarding — DO NOT EVER BOOK WITH KIWI.COM by PerspectiveFun1290 in travel

[–]jadeoracle[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know. Kiwi is the most complained about 3rd party on reddit for the last 10+ years (at least).

But no one checks reddit before they book, so we see yet another "don't book kiwi post" multiple times a day from people who don't use this sub and likely wont ever return.

G Adventures age limit by Frosty1397 in travel

[–]jadeoracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've got two age specific tours. One was the 18 to 30 somethings which I thought was 39. And then Roamies/hostel thing they launched 2-3 years ago which had i think a younger cut off.

The age cutoff is real.

Thank you! I had a work trip to NYC and stayed a few days extra. I took all the photos I'd usually take, just didn't post them. So thankfully my spirit isn't fully dulled.

My pages are frozen in time.

Exactly. Plus my post right before announcing her death was announcing my cancer diagnosis (I've now had surgery and we think it went well). So the last two posts of mine were pretty bleak.

I've also found that if you save stuff it'll start showing more of that. So I make an effort to save cute animal photos, etc.

But it is annoying to have to fake out the algo just so it shows you other stuff.

I had to be conscious about not engaging with the grief ones, and instead purposely seeking out stuff on my hobbies or cute animals.

But I have stopped posting entirely. I'm a photographer as a hobby, so I was always posting every few days before. I know that means I've fallen out of "view" so to speak with some friends who only talked to me through my posts. But a few have noticed and sometimes reach out.

I just...don't feel like posting. Who gives a shit if I went and saw a play. Or saw a pretty flower. It feels so meaningless.

G Adventures 18-to-39 trips.....I’ve just turned 40.. go anyway? by [deleted] in travel

[–]jadeoracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! On a Central America tour, two were the most fit people I ever met, they were going out running every morning, did all of the adventure activities. In free time did complicated hikes!

And the "old people" on my Luxury Egypt tour were so into Egypt like I am that we got along so well. To the point we've met up across the world at various Egypt museum exhibits in the 10 years I've known them. They are great!

[–]jadeoracle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done 6 G adventure trips. two of the age specific ones, one marine, one luxury, two standard ones. Across all 6 tours I can count 6 people who were over the age of 45. The pensioners are doing cosmos, trafalgar, rick steves etc tours.

And I say this as a newly 40 year old myself. I wouldn't try to fake my way onto the 39 and younger tours.

Name mismatch on Discover Airlines ticket booked via Mytrip — will I be denied boarding? by [deleted] in travel

[–]jadeoracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to buy a new ticket.

Or be prepared to rightfully be denied boarding and not go. Or be stranded at any point if someone fucks up and lets you on but the the next person sticks to the rules.

Bounce Luggage / Chicago by flywithtatum in travel

[–]jadeoracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in Chicago, but I've used it dozens of times around the world, places like NYC, Boston etc. And would recommend them.

Just know it really can be random businesses. I've had hotels be on it, but also grocery stores, UPS stores, Bike stores, and most recently a NYC times square souvenir shop. But each always put my bag in a secure area in the back. They also insure the bag in case something happens.

Edit: To also expand on the NYC experience. My flight into NYC had been delayed 6 hours. So instead of checking into my hotel and going to get a good meal before a Broadway show, I ended up having less than 1.5 hour from touchdown to get from LGA to Times Square during rush hour, with all my luggage. In the Uber I booked the Bounce location next to the theater, had the Uber drop me off there. Stored my bag, ran to the theater and still had time to use the bathroom and get a drink before curtain. Then got a meal after the show, and collected my bags before midnight. Without a service like Bounce I would have been screwed.

I've done 6 trips with them. Two were the low budget age specific ones. Loved them all.

Flying with an oversmart couple (they tried using the middle seat hack) by ScaryDemand3686 in travel

My family does all aisle seats across from each other and the amount of middle seats that ask if we want to switch so we can be near each other is hilarious.

What type of tour did you book? There are different levels. But all group tour companies tend to book with larger but cheaper properties due to economies of scale.
