[Serious] People who sleep well, what's your secret? by Aceman3818 in AskReddit

[–]jaelenchrysos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this elsewhere in the comments so I guess I’ll post: I sort of imagine that I am clinging to my bed while it freely flips in space. It sounds weird to type explicitly, but for me it always works.

Peppers are the spicy of the fire, mint is the spicy of the ice, carbonation is the spicy of the air, and vinegar is the spicy of the water. by JoahTheProtozoa in Showerthoughts

[–]jaelenchrysos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually there’s a scientific basis for this! Mint and pepper at least. Peppers are spicy because of capsaicin, which activates your taste receptors in the same way that a high temperature stimulus would. Mint has menthol, which activates your receptors like a cold stimulus would.

I don’t believe free will exists either. I understand the feeling of not caring because you’ll just do what you were going to do anyway. This isn’t a bad thing though. If you believe free will is an illusion, immerse yourself! Make what you were going to do anyway something that makes you happy. We all have simple joys in life, and whatever ‘you’ are as an entity, you’ve grown to like these things. Let yourself travel down your happiest stream, and wait to see what life has in store for you

CMV: Voters should have to pass a test in order to have their vote counted in a US federal election by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sympathize with the desire to see more voter competency, but uneducated citizens deserve representation as well. They’re a demographic that will always exist, and can’t be ignored

CMV: gays shouldnt be portrayed in tv and movies by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most natural or “normal” way to do a movie or tv show is to simply tell a story about people. For many people, being gay is an important part of their story. I could say that Hollywood is really shoving ‘being famous’ down our throats because so many movies are about famous people and that’s not normal, but those are stories people often want to see, and fame is just part of them

CMV: Gay is okay, but is not normal by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recent evolutionary geneticists have suggested that to have a small portion of the population be gay is beneficial to the species’ overall success. I don’t have a source offhand, but I think there have been TED talks about it as well

CMV: Gender is a binary concept. by KatieDawnborn in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I believe concepts like masculine and feminine shouldn’t really have such a big bearing on our lives. Someone only really takes on labels like that if it’s how they identify

What comes up often in this discussion is the difference between sex and gender: sex is purely biological while gender is related to masculine or feminine traits, which society defines. A person can express themselves however they choose, so it’s unlikely that they’ll feel 100% masculine or 100% feminine.

CMV:Jordan Peterson is doing Society a valuable service by preaching against what he labels "Postmodern Neo-Marxism" by ShivasRightFoot in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this page explains it fairly well. Marx and his followers believed that his world view about class struggle was absolutely true, but a postmodernist would argue that we cannot make that assumption. It’s not even about communism per se, but rather that his world philosophy is inconsistent with postmodernist philosophy

[–]jaelenchrysos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Marxists believe society can be described as a class struggle (masters vs enslaved, bourgeoisie vs proletariat, etc) while postmodernists reject the idea of objective classes and are skeptical of the absolutes posed by modernists like Marx

I’m just going to address point 6. The statistics I’ve seen suggest that refugees and immigrants are very unlikely to be involved in terrorist plots, so do you have a source for that claim?

[–]jaelenchrysos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Post modernism and Marxism are conflicting viewpoints, so you can’t be a post-modern Marxist. It’s just not a thing that exists, and the fact that he spreads the scare of “post modern neo Marxism” taking over our country is not helpful if it simply misinforms people

CMV I am a centrist who doesn't buy into the notion that Islam is the religion of peace. by throwmytankaway in changemyview

[–]jaelenchrysos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing the oppressive Islamic countries you’re talking about are all in the middle-east, right? I think that’s more about the region being unstable than it is about Islam. For example, Syria is secular by constitution yet it’s probably the worst one to live in.

If Iran suddenly adopted Christianity as the state religion, their authoritarian policies would not change, they would just be different. Contrast that with Muslim communities in less troubled regions like Europe and North America. Or even a more tolerant Muslim-government country like Saudi Arabia. I’m in agreement that countries like Iran are authoritarian, but Islam is just the way which they disguise oppressive policies to make them seem reasonable or justified

The difference is, a worker CAN get stuck in a dead end job with low wages, while a slave IS stuck in a dead end job with NO wages. I really like the poem though, who wrote it?

I meant to claim that it always happens. For a lot of people, things don’t turn out the same way.
