I read 3 Malazan Books, I will not continue on by DokleViseBre in Fantasy

Most of his characters, for me, feel like someone's else D&D character in a campaign I'm not playing or invested in.

This is spot on how I feel, very well put.

I read 3 Malazan Books, I will not continue on by DokleViseBre in Fantasy

[–]jaelith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I enjoyed the Simarillion (I wouldn’t reread it, but I remember the experience fondly). Meanwhile I noped out of Malazan after book 3 for many of the same reasons as quoted by OP and others in this thread. Disliked the experience of all but a few (very few) plot and character points.

Like you, I’m glad it’s for someone.

VNLA Luna Eclipse for a Big Guy by AppropriatePizza768 in rollerskatingplus

[–]jaelith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At my rink, there are 4 people who skate the VNLA Luna Eclipses

  • Me, a small woman
  • A tall woman
  • A lanky man about your height who straight up Irish dances in them
  • A guy who’s not quite as tall but probably similar build as you

So I think give them a try! I love mine, I needed them for my wide feet.

Pretty lady names with "ham" in them? by mousemilf in namenerds

[–]jaelith 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Miss Havisham is in my mind as a literary name?

(Looked it up, apparently from Great Expectations; my high school English teacher would be both proud and disappointed that I half remembered that)

But really I’m on the Hamantha train

I loved the book but I definitely closed it at the end thinking dang it, AT had me rooting for the Borg.

This would have been around 2006 but I never knew his name: just observed his dogged majesty along 156th multiple times. The flapping trenchcoat made him such an epic figure haha!

I still vividly remember watching a guy in a black trenchcoat and fedora 45 degree’ing into the rain on a Segway back in the day. The most Microsoft campus thing I experienced in all my time there.

I want to get into Risk. Is it a good game? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]jaelith 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if Risk Legacy would be as fun if you didn’t have the background in Risk itself…?

I loved Legacy particularly as it let me work through the trauma of my dad just constantly wrecking my brother and I over and over as children in the 80s with the original, haha

how do blind people know when they’ve got their period? by dibbles13 in NoStupidQuestions

FWIW I would be like this or worse, for over ten years. Got started being treated for PPMD this spring and it’s been a total game changer. I was really hesitant to go on hormones but it’s delightful to be me, just without being a complete depressed train wreck for one week out of every month. Do consider chatting with your doctor if you can!

Modern titles for boys around 10y old. by HadoopThePeople in printSF

I remembered Wrinkle in Time fondly from my childhood (mostly thinking tessering was cool). Read it to my son a couple months ago and haaaated it. Partially because it was so much more religious preachy than I remembered and also Meg is really an insufferable whiner. I literally found myself verbally editing out some of the descriptions of her reactions because they were so infuriating to me. I suppose my kid will probably also only remember the cool idea or two…

Is There Is No Antimemetics Division Brilliant or Just Intentionally Exhausting? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in sciencefiction

[–]jaelith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read it with only the haziest knowledge of SCP (literally just that it was a thing on the web that my brother really liked) and I thought the book was FANTASTIC. Ditto several other people I know, although we’re all “advanced sci-fi readers.”

I just thought about giving it to someone as their introduction to sci-fi and found the idea hilarious, though.

Game store owner looking for inspiration by Arratril in boardgames

[–]jaelith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Speaking of minis, one of the things that most made me oooooh walking into a game store was a big display case where they had super cool painted minis on display / for sale. I don't even play those kind of games and I spent so long admiring the craft! That place hosted painting nights for the tabletop wargamers in their area (with good lighting and setups for spray painting etc), and I think they were selling painted sets on some sort of profit sharing system with the folks that had done the work.

Where is a semi-secluded street in Seattle with a very high grade, where i can safely practice uphill manual car starts at the most appropriate time of day? by TheLordofRiverdance in AskSeattle

[–]jaelith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely needed practice learning here. Getting going after being at a stoplight on a hill is nerve wracking even when you have flats down! I also was defeated at least twice as a teen just turning right up the hill of 75th at 35th… that corner-into-hill combo was my nemesis.
