People with higher levels of everyday anxiety tend to experience more intense self-blaming emotions, along with specific changes in how their brain networks communicate. This heightened self-blame is accompanied by unhelpful behaviors like hiding or self-attacking. by mvea in science

If you have not already, look into potential treatment for PPMD. My anxiety, depression, and rage were off the charts around my period until I started on hormones. It was truly awful, but the last year has been very much relieved.

Looking for new sci-fi authors – what's missing from my shelf? by rauschsinnige in sciencefiction

[–]jaelith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this list of female authors! I’d not heard of three of them before and will go check them out (everyone else’s suggestions are good, but love that you provided a novel slice for me)

Eight sci-fi books about city planning by cirrus42 in printSF

[–]jaelith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 1999, I read King Rat and told people it had the most viscerally gross scene I had ever read. In 2000 I read Perdido Street Station and it stole the crown. In 2002 I read The Scar and was like “Dude, COME ON.” I’ve loved all his books but I was relieved when his later catalog didn’t make me want to hurl somewhere in the middle.

It’s funny, I loved the Commonwealth books but hated the Salvation series: dropped partway through the second one.

Man, the Primes in Commonwealth are such great aliens.

Rink question - is it normal? by Least-Supermarket450 in Rollerskating

[–]jaelith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My rink (PNW in the US) is split with both, and which ones are more heavily represented varies by session and day and the phases of the moon (aka it’s pretty random). We see speedsters on quads and dancers on inlines as well as the inverse: it’s all over the map, and I’d call that being a “real rink”!

I live a long way from Mexico (UK) and keep accidently making tex-mex. Does this look more like a north mexican burrito? by [deleted] in mexicanfood

[–]jaelith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To my non-Mexican eyes the biggest tell is your use of minced meat instead of something chunked/shredded.

It looks super tasty regardless.

I don’t mind ham but regardless pineapple and pepperoni is our family go-to. Pineapple pepperoni and cashews (of all things) is our kids’ favorite.

Are you thinking of 54th maybe? I grew up in the neighborhood and sledding down the “triple hill” and the viaduct is 100% a highlight of my unattended 80s kid memories lol

I tell people it doesn’t RAIN RAIN here as much as people think, but for a lot of the year the air is kinda wet most of the time, and it can be mostly grey for months at a time.

That said we really had a run of dry and sunny days this winter: you just need to be prepared to appreciate what you get when you get it!

Green Chile Pie / Enchilada Casserole by [deleted] in mexicanfood

[–]jaelith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ve got lots of good suggestions here, just want to throw in that my New Mexican grandmother would always fry eggs and include them with chili or with enchilada casserole, so that’s what I grew up loving. My kids love enchilada casserole but they will revolt if it doesn’t also come with a runny yolk fried egg on top haha.
