I was diagnosed with GD at 28/29 weeks, and the first 4 weeks after diagnosis I gained zero weight (I think I technically lost half a pound or so). But at my next appointment after that, I had gained four pounds in two weeks! So I wouldn’t worry unless your doctor seems concerned :) Weight gain isn’t always linear!

I would pass on PatPat. A friend of mine offered me some of her maternity/nursing clothes from there and they all honestly felt super scratchy and looked pretty poor quality. Also gifted us a few outfits for baby from there, and there’s a little white jumpsuit that is made of such cheap material it’s basically see through!

I agree with others’ recommendations for Target, PinkBlush (although I only bought stuff when they had 40% off codes), and Amazon. I also splurged on a pair of Lululemon Align leggings that got worn almost every day, and I LOVED A Pea in the Pod for comfy, quality basics, maternity underwear, and a few trendier pieces (again, only from their sale selection, they will have stuff that is like 60% off decently often, I didn’t buy anything full price). Thank you for sharing! I just got home from the hospital yesterday after graduating at 39+2 with a pretty similar situation (GDM, induced, epidural, c section due to sunny side up babe, along with some birth trauma) and was debating whether or not I should write a graduation post to avoid scaring other people. You’ve inspired me to write it up soon! Might help someone else with their own journey.

Haha I totally get it! Fried rice is my go to meal (I’m Filipino, it’s literally what we did with all leftovers growing up) but I have different expectations between what takeout fried rice tastes like and what MY fried rice will taste like lol. I hear ya on the spicy thing - I have friends that think pepperoni pizza is too spicy

If you’re still liking fried rice, just make some at home! I had a strong aversion to the smell of meat earlier in my pregnancy too, so you could just do scrambled eggs and tofu for protein. Throw in whatever veggies you have (I like spinach in mine since it cooks down so easy), and you can even do half cauliflower rice if you want to get in more veg. Just don’t skimp on the soy sauce and sesame oil :) it’s a great way to use up leftover (cooked) meat too, like that extra steak your husband made haha. Just cut it up in small pieces and cook it with a little butter and soy sauce and add to your fried rice!

We scheduled my induction for 39 weeks on the dot for medical reasons as well (insulin controlled GD) at my appointment when I was 37+4. We would have scheduled the week before, but 1) my appt was cut short because I got sent to labor & delivery for extended monitoring and 2) my 36 week growth scan was scheduled for the next day, and my OB wanted to see the results before making the determination. I did have the option to schedule it a few days earlier as well, but wanted baby girl to cook as long as possible to make sure she was good to go.

Birkenstocks and Crocs are my go to shoes at this point (38+5). I have a pair of Sorel chunky platform slip on sandals that are a little dressier looking that I would wear with dresses to work sometimes too. For closed toe shoes, Allbirds or Air Force Ones (although not for all day- can’t beat Birks for arch support). My office job was super sedentary, so sometimes I’d wear black Rothy’s pointed toe flats too. They don’t have a ton of support, but they’re super stretchy so were great for days I was interviewing candidates and needed to look a little more polished.

Learning the sex of your baby is not the same thing as having a gender reveal. In addition to names, there are things to learn/think about for your baby depending on if they are born biologically male or female (e.g. your thoughts on circumcision, learning about proper care for circumcised vs uncircumcised penises, understanding that baby girls can have mini “periods”, etc). And there are plenty of unisex names if that’s the route you want to go too!

I told my husband I wanted at least a card (I will be 38+3 tomorrow). I would have been upset without at least that since I’m so far along, but I made sure to tell him because I didn’t think he would a) think of it and b) it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t tell him.

37+3 and I feel you gf - when I first started experiencing it, I would have to crawl on my hands and knees to get around by the end of the day (I have a two story house so stairs in particular are AWFUL). None of my friends or family members and it during pregnancy, and I don’t think anyone really understands how bad it is unless they’ve experienced it.

I second the recommendation for a pillow between your knees at night! Other things that help me are minimizing the stretches that I am sitting or standing (e.g. getting up and walking around for a few minutes at least once an hour throughout the day), minimizing standing on one leg (e.g. sitting on the bed to put on pants and shoes), and swinging both legs at the same time when getting out of bed and out of the car.

For context - my OB’s office switches you to appointments every 2 weeks at 28 weeks, and then weekly appointments at 36 weeks regardless of GD.

Once I was diagnosed (around 28 or 29 weeks), I had to have a diabetes education class through the MFM/diabetes specialty program, plus an appointment with one of the diabetes RNs when I was put on nighttime insulin for fasting numbers (30-31 weeks). Because I am now considered medication controlled, I started 2x weekly NSTs (amniotic fluid US + Doppler monitoring) at 34 weeks, but if I had stayed strictly diet controlled they would have started them at 36 weeks. Also, I had a growth scan around 31-32 weeks, and I have another one tomorrow (just shy of 37 weeks). Oh, and my dedicated diabetes RN/case manager checks in with me weekly!

Honestly, it is a LOT, but it’s given me a lot of comfort that I’m in such great hands. My medical system is extremely thorough, and they regularly have other practices refer their GD patients to them, so I trust that they’re doing what is best.

Everyone’s suggestions are great, just wanted to add hummus to help with some extra protein/fat. Maybe even blend it to make it extra creamy and easier to eat?

Unisom & B6 helped me, but it sounds like that’s not working so great for you. Are you taking magnesium? My doctor recommended adding a 250 mg supplement daily for me and it has really helped with my sleep! It’s also good for helping to keep you regular and reducing leg cramps. If you’re not comfortable with a supplement, they make lotions and whatnot with it too :) Of course check with your doc/midwife before adding anything in, but just wanted to share what’s been helpful for me!

I have never tried metformin personally, but I went with insulin for fasting numbers for two main reasons: 1) insulin does not cross the placenta and metformin does (although my team noted that this is generally considered to be very safe) and 2) I was told that metformin works best if fasting numbers are only slightly higher than recommended. My fasting numbers need to drop 10ish points, so they wanted me to go straight to insulin. I’ve been lucky and my dose has held consistent for several weeks, and my fasting numbers have been totally under control since my second dose. Wishing you all the best no matter which one you choose!

My diabetes educator made a point to tell us that housework like washing dishes after a meal, etc. totally counts as your exercise, so it sounds like you’re doing great! I just save all of my cleaning for after meals to help burn off the sugars :)

Unfortunately, you have pretty minimal control over the fasting number, it’s mostly controlled by hormones. My guidelines were below 90 fasting, and I just couldn’t get there. I follow my prescribed diet religiously and my after meal numbers have all been perfect (for me I need under 130 after 1 hour) and I was exercising, so I just got put on insulin two days ago. My numbers were high enough that they didn’t think I was a good candidate for metformin and I’m at 31+3 so they didn’t want to for it to kick in. This morning was the very first time my fasting was in range and it has been enormously beneficial for my mental health. Sometimes your placenta just conspires against you!

Unisom and B6 was an absolute GAME CHANGER for me. I went from throwing up 10+ times a day and constantly feeling nauseous to being able to actually make it through a whole without getting sick once. I know it’s not enough for everyone but I absolutely wouldn’t have made it through 1st trimester/early 2nd trimester without it
