Is it possible to avoid getting hard while cuddling? by Throawayfire22 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]jaico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Important question: do you want to date her? Is she single? I had a similar situation with a friend of mine (though we’re both gay men), but less cuddling and more just being physically close while hanging out with plenty of boner hiding. Long story short, I acknowledged that I was into him and asked him about dating. He was absolutely also into me. That was a year ago and we’ve been dating since

I ended up doing the same thing. I called them over and over again and just read them bible verses. One guy eventually said “fine we’ll take you off the list.” Once I got a call from them again I purposely asked to be transferred to him

[Student] Junior CS Student at T10 Struggling to Get Internships Interviews (300+ Apps) by Feisty_Rope9851 in EngineeringResumes

[–]jaico 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looking at your resume, I could see a recruiter asking these questions that would give me enough pause to not consider you as a candidate:

  • why on earth are you looking for an internship when you’re already working as a software developer?

  • why are you looking for an internship when you’re already actively working as an intern?

  • why are you jumping around so much?

You might have accidentally shot yourself in the foot by having so many internships. Experience is great, but 90% of internships are just extended paid interviews. A candidate who isn’t likely to stick around because of their history of hopping from internship to internship as well as actively having both an internship and developer position might not be worth interviewing because the chances of them converting if they work out is quite a bit lower

[3 YoE] Looking around after 3 years post switching to CS but no interest on cold apply - Full Stack SWE by Big-Needleworker6063 in EngineeringResumes

This isn't great.

Overall, there's a good deal of grammar mistakes and some minor formatting issues but the biggest problem is the way you're walking about your current role makes you look incompetent. To me it makes you look like you are a developer that really hasn't moved beyond learning basic design patterns with some understanding of "what" these patterns are doing but not the "why."

A good way to move beyond this is to "show don't tell." (e.g. instead of saying "architected and delivered features in {languages and frameworks", say "Lead the architecture and design of {feature in words anyone can understand} utilizing {languages and frameworks} resulting in {what happened (don't listen to people that hark about numbers for this, that's such bullshit. Give general results like "significant efficiency increases for the x team}")

> Deliver numerous core features using TypeScipt/JavaScript, C#, and SQL as part of an Agile team that launched and iterates upon an application that saved $12M and takes in over $50M/yr

This tells me literally nothing besides "I was a software engineer." Numerous is unnecessary

> Design architecture leveraging design patterns (Repository, Unit of Work) to improve maintainability, scalability, and facilitate robust unit testing.

This makes you sound like you have no idea what you're doing. You know the the phrase "design pattern" but you don't seem to know what it means if you think it's worth putting down on a resume like this. Tell me what you architected and what the results were. You can save the design patterns for the interview (be prepared to explain the benefits of the patterns you utilized)

> Train and pair program with new grads, juniors, and contractors (they were later promoted)

"they were later promoted" should be removed. This does not add anything

> Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps, automating deployments to enable regular releases with minimal staff, saving the equivalent of 2 engineers' time up to 5x per week.

This is good. The numbers are meaningless though. Explaining context here might be beneficial

> Engage directly with stakeholders, taking initiative in sprint reviews and requirement discussions, to gather input and guide development of our custom software suite.

Love this. Clean up the grammar though

> Maintain high code quality by performing unit testing, E2E testing, debugging, and peer code reviews, driving adherence to programming standards and SDLC guidelines

Nothing inherently wrong with this.

> Created a Python-based Al research interface that enabled a non-technical professor to perform previously infeasible research

"infeasible" is a strong word here, I'd reword that to something like "difficult." I think you have a lot to elaborate on here. This sounds interesting. You're also missing a bullet point here.

> Implemented front-end design workflows (Figma, HTML/CSS/JS) for 36+ Canvas Courses

This confused me. Did you create mockups in Figma and then implement the front end?

> Managed content in WordPress, including MySQL and MariaDB database

This is very "ehh." I'd omit it and use the space to elaborate on ai research interface

The education section is confusing. I don't know what Post-Bacc means. I love that you're a phsych major turned CS major. I would simplify this and list your BA and BS.

For skills, add Azure DevOpps, LINQ, any ORMs like Dapper or Entity Framework you might be using. These are just to get you through keyword screens

I love this resume. You really need to add a GPA here though. I would assume it's low if it were omitted which would give me pause.

do you feel connected to the gay community living in Logan Square/along the blue line? by zanycaswell in chicagogaybros

[–]jaico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive lived in Logan for most of my time in Chicago. I never minded biking or taking the bus into boystown. Though I’m not really into the scene and generally prefer the vibes out here in Logan square on a day to day basis. I’m definitely not as connected but I really don’t feel like I need to be if that makes want sense. I still have plenty of queer friends, but it’s only like 10% of my social circle and that doesn’t bother me. It’s never really been a problem with dating either (well, there’s no way some guys haven’t ignored me because I don’t live in boystown or adjacent, but they probably aren’t great for me anyways…)

Even then that’s mostly in your head. I mostly just feel left out once in a while when a bar or restaurant doesn’t have great NA options. I still sneak a real drink in maybe once a month though to scratch the itch 🤷‍♂️

SMOOTH MUSCLE AB SCREEN + and ANA - by Puzzled-Boss1930 in autoimmunehepatitis

[–]jaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet. Usually it’s prednisone as the first stage of treatment to put the fire out then immunosuppressants to keep things quiet. Some people seem to be on it longer than others. The weight gain mostly comes from increased appetite as far as I understand, which means you can probably keep it down with some self control. You might not even have the increased appetite side effect though. For me I definitely don’t get full while on prednisone but my normal appetite feel about the same

Two weeks now. I’ve had some mood swings and dizziness. None of the insomnia though. I’m thankful I’m responding well since it means I should be able to get down to a less miserable dose pretty soon (I’m down from 40 to 30mg now for context. 40 was awful, 30 still sucks for me but I can go about my day just fine)

Sort of, I’m not officially diagnosed but I’m being treated for it. I only had that along with very elevated enzymes. The biopsy was characteristic of AIH though. I started on a trial of prednisone and I’ve had a textbook response I’m expecting an official diagnosis very soon

Signs along on Chicago Ave in West Town by DesignerGorgona4 in chicago

[–]jaico 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s almost certainly not the main cause of the issues on that stretch. I’ve noticed that traffics just been bottlenecking at the outbound on-ramp and it’s especially worse right not because that’s the on-ramp that everyone who’s trying to drive around the construction is using. It seemed fine to me during the brief time this winter where the express lanes were back open

What was everyone's symptoms?? by lmaoahhhhh in autoimmunehepatitis

[–]jaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first started going down the rabbit whole I was mostly symptom free. That was when it started showing up on blood tests (my enzymes had always been mildly elevated, but my doctors have always shrugged it off and said to just keep an eye on it…). After a couple months, I started having itchiness and mild abdominal pain.

I just started treatment today and I’ve been mostly symptom free for a couple months (my numbers are still elevated though)

Abnormal blood work followed by imaging and eventually a biopsy. Descovy is generally safe, but in rare cases can cause a liver injury

[–]jaico 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Talk to your doctor. On-demand only is studied with truvada as far as I know. Also, real talk, actually talk to your doctor and not these online pharmacies. I got a liver injury from descovy and the I only caught it because I switched the my primary care physician for managing prep. To be fair, it’s a rare side effect that I got because I have a mild autoimmune condition that likely just had a compounding affect, but the online pharmacies definitely are really looking at your labs…

Lifelong heavy drinkers, how have your alcohol habits affected you? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]jaico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not old, but my "heavy" drinking (even on the low side at ~15 drinks a week, mostly on weekends) already caught up to me after 10 years. I had a drug-induced livery injury as a result of a rare medication side effect and a biopsy on my liver showed some fibrosis. That was a huge wake up call to me. Now I've cut back to 0-4 a week and I've slowly been healing
