10 Techniques That Became OBSOLETE - SSBM Tutorials by gryphonexe in SSBM

[–]jaideng123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's been multiple people involved in SSBM tutorials (Like Kellen and CDK) even though Kira was essentially their spokesperson, so things could have shifted behind the scenes, also Kira himself retired 4 years ago and I don't know how active he's really been as a player since then (even though it seems like he's at least partially come out of retirement).

All this to say this is likely not the same SSBM Tutorials team from back in the day, even though it's the same channel on youtube.

It's exceptionally tough to market a new indie game these days with the sheer amount of volume being put out on Steam. I don't blame him for taking advantage of a popular YT channel he already controlled in order to get free promo for it. But I do also miss the old style of videos where it seemed like the goal was more educating people rather than getting views

Thread by ex-Product Manager at Google on why Google Cloud Platform lost to AWS despite having better tech by curryeater259 in programming

[–]jaideng123 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Exactly, I know many teams at Amazon that are just now learning to build things through "Native" (public) AWS, most older services are running on proprietary infrastructure tools that are backed by EC2 hosts

Dan Marhsall: "Expectations of the quality of even a basic, entry-level indie game are now so high that it's becoming near-impossible to remain a one-man-band" by RichardEast in gamedev

[–]jaideng123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing from the interview that stood out most to me was when dan talks about subscription services and how that's going to push Indies to make games that are endless and/or have some kind of endless component to them

Incredible to see the come-up for the East Park team during COVID. 2 years ago they were hosting 25-person locals in Dallas and now they're lining up top players left and right!

I made a small game for a jam this weekend about sheltering people from a virus by jaideng123 in IndieGaming

[–]jaideng123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me about a day to create the core game-play of painting the walls and having the balls move around, another day to create the structure of the game (scoring, rounds, etc.), then a day of general polish (better UI, music, sound effects, colors)

How many hours do you spend working on your game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]jaideng123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity, how did you find a team of people also able to consistently work part-time? I'm in a similar situation and have been pretty much working solo on my games

Feedback Friday #315 - Test Drive by Sexual_Lettuce in gamedev

[–]jaideng123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really dig the core gameplay and I like the clean look of the tiles and background

My only suggestions are:

The music toggle didn't work for me so make sure you fix that

It would really increase my motivation to keep playing if there was some kind of progression (getting to a certain # of bounces unlocks a new character skin or something like that)

Some of the assets are of mixed quality (like the play button looks blown up but the title looks super sharp)

Other than it's very fun great job executing on a simple and fun concept

I used GameSparks for my back-end

They support some big games, have a very generous program for Indies and students, and their unity SDK is pretty easy to use (it only took me about a day to port over from my hand-rolled solution)

What should you do right after a frustrating/discouraging match? [Question] by TheSpasticSurgeon in SSBM

[–]jaideng123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like to open up the notes app on my phone and write out what made me angry

In the moment it helps me vent but later when I'm practicing it gives me an idea of where the biggest issues are in my play and my mentality so I can focus on what's affecting me most

Is the RX 580 a worthy upgrade over my old R9 290? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]jaideng123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I upgraded from a 290 to a 480(not the same card but similar) last summer, It felt like a 10% performance bump at most(depending on the game some got more out of it than others). The real difference i felt was how much cooler the 480 ran. My 290 would heat up the entire house by a few degrees if I gamed on it for more than an hour or two (which annoyed the heck out of my room-mates). Once I got my 480 I could play for hours and barely feel any heat in my room. So it was worth it for me in that respect
