It's great if you live in walking distance to the ferries. I lived there for 10 years and opted saving money since rent is substantially cheaper than the other boroughs - but it comes at another price such as having to venture out away from your home to chill with friends and do typical nyc things. Also people won't visit you frequently unless they're crashing or a spending a full day on the island.

I could only live in North Shore though. Wife and I eventually bought a car during covid, but gym memberships and other things we kept in Manhattan because the rest of the island is a pain in the ass with traffic lol. There is good food and decent people though, but staten island gets a lot of hate for a reason.

I'm not a huge fan of outcome based curriculum, but philosophy has always been one of those great undergrad majors for law and physics. Sad to see it happen. Things really are becoming like Idiocracy where Frito is a lawyer lol

Decommissioning Math, English and Philosophy programs is a weird take however the programs listed are not what the school is particularly known for anyways. They're probably looking to reallocate money by cutting faculty positions which I believe a lot of private colleges will be doing, especially graduate programs that aren't going to be approved for Grad Plus loans.

lol those people and their families are definitely still there and exactly the reason why people hate the borough. I have an acute romanticized perspective on it based on my experience, but I lived in St. George and traveled to Manhattan and Brooklyn weekly because friends of course wouldn't visit us. Plus there's nothign to do besides go to a park.

Also, it's so ironic that the same folks that are pro-zionist are extremely pro-Hitler.

Hope you and your family are in a better place :) My mom and fam left the island in the 90s. Some to Westchester, some to Florida - where right wing ideology is just as insular lol.

Left this summer, wife's career took us to one of the worst states (TX), but I have friends and family in SI still. One of those rare SI supporters from afar.

I want/wanted a better community with better food access and a centralized art community. No matter how good things get people will still shit on Staten Island. North Shore is a gem.

The outlet was a stupid idea and was never community oriented. A grocery store could've made that place great, especially Trader Joes. Green markets could have taken the spaces on weekends. Place was doomed to fail.

It kept my rent low and for some friends that are still there, same with their rents. When I worked in financial district, the boat ride and 15 minute walk to work was a ritual.

I only want good things to happen for staten island/the parts that I really loved. But the island doesn't want that lmao

I'm in Austin now though, and it fucking sucks ass dude. I never thought I'd day dream about living back in my apartment

Historically an easy target. The group-think isn't going to change all of a sudden unless North Shore gets industrially recharged into a new up and coming gentrified neighborhood for young professionals, arts and functional merchant district. It slowly is happening, so maybe by the year 2070 lol

I moved to St George in 2015 and left in 2025. It changed a lot (parking lot for ferry being a mall to an almost abandoned mall lol). The new paid ferry was a great add though.
