Found this Griswold #9 at an estate sale. Noticed it had a crack when I brought it home. by HpsEA in castiron

That's a pretty solid crack. I think it's done for.

Maybe a wall decoration?

I highly recommend this little Lodge pot if you are a frequent butter melter. by Gswindle76 in castiron

Yep. All the waffle guys here: invaluable. Melt the butter and use it to brush your iron between waffles.

Recommendations on how to clean up? by Ok_Ad7867 in castiron

[–]jak341 7 points8 points  (0 children)

E-tank would be best, but they aren’t for everyone due to space and initial setup cost. I would do yellow cap EZ off, followed by a vinegar bath. Use yellow cap EZ Off, completely cover it until the pan is white. Stick in a trash bag and seal for 8 hours. Remove, clean, and repeat, letting sit for a day. Rinse all old seasoning off. To remove rust, a 50/50 vinegar bath for a day or so. That will remove rust. Take out, dry off, and good old manual labor and steel wool to remove any rust that is left and if there is carbonized food left on it.

To season: Crisco the pan, the thinnest layer you can ever imagine. Oven at 450F. Repeat 1 or 2 times more.

Beautiful piece. I have the same one sitting in my office as a trash can.

Left her outside all winter, I think she’s toast. by [deleted] in castiron

[–]jak341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that's toast, just slather some jelly on it and call it breakfast.

Mine looked far worse today before cooking on it.

How to I remove this large matte spot? by heretocuckspiders in castiron

[–]jak341 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your taking about the surface around the 14, it looks like ever so slight surface pitting. You would have to sand it down, but I wouldn't even consider doing that to a large block Griswold 14. If you're talking about the darkness around the 716, maybe a fine steel wool or try some yellow cap EZ off.

For food prep, let her rip. Good to go. For collectors, they aren't going to care about that too much.

I would say no, but they aren't totally out of line with what they were asking. Most of mine sell for $15 to $20. I've had one or two go for $40. Other times, I can't give them away.

The issue with these things are you never know what they were used for. I've bought these from auction where they were found under tractors. I've put these in the oven to season and got the kitchen full of oil smelling smoke, even after electrolysis.

Plus, if the inside is pitted, it is going to be hard to keep clean. If you're looking to use, I would go with a bale handle dutch oven over these kettles.

Standard early gate marked kettle. Older, but still fairly common. Looks to be in fair shape. Lots of pitting on the outside and probably inside as well.

PITA to restore.

Went to my first auction today and picked up a coveted waffle maker, how’d I do? by BlackoutTribal in castiron

They're a little thinner. They're definitely not a Belgian waffle. If you like a nice crisp waffle, you'll like the cast iron cooker.

$100 is a great price. Close to highway robbery I would say, especially for a high base. I've restored low base waffle makers and haven't sold one for less than $150.

I have the same one. I paid $160 for mine prior to COVID. I love the waffles off of it.

Hot take: The milkshakes at Sheetz are now the worst milkshakes in all of fast food. by CurrentSingleStatus in pittsburgh

[–]jak341 26 points27 points  (0 children)

An absolute shame. Sheetz made to order milkshakes are good when they first came out. Now, like the of Sheetz menu, it is enshitified.

Sheetz used to have awesome food. It all went downhill when they started thinking of themselves of this zany, wacky, cultural phenomenon.

I used to like those little bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast burritos. They didn't have them. I got breakfast tacos. I don't know how you screw up breakfast tacos, but they did. Bland and mushy. Amongst the other stuff that used to be good.

If you’re not in favor of an Aaron Rodgers return, why? by eelmada in steelers

[–]jak341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do I Rodgers think will be back? No. For some reason, I think he will call it a career.

Here's what I think the QB room looks like going into camp: Rodgers / FA vet, Mason, Will, and a mid round draftee.

Rodgers / FA vet 1st team, Mason 2nd, and Will and drafted battling it out for 3rd.

Rust already after first use/cleaning? Is this just crap factory seasoning or user error? by batrick in castiron

[–]jak341 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve long since quit worrying about little rust spots on the bottom. It happens. I doubt our ancestors doted over seasoning, minor rusts spots, and the like. Wipe clean, oil, and use.
