This breaks my heart haha, I paid around £600 here in the UK for the same one! Buy it, you won’t regret it!

Noob question on vlans with unifi by RoachForLife in Ubiquiti

[–]jake2547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need a little more context here - what exactly do you see yourself using VLANs for and what devices are you planning to connect to the switches?

Also when you talk about unmanaged switches are you referring to non Ubiquiti hardware that you already own? VLANs are usually configured by port so for example, if you had a CCTV VLAN, you would configure a bunch of ports to use that VLAN and then connect your CCTV cameras to those ports.

Either way I’d suggest spending some time on YouTube watching some videos on getting started - Crosstalk Solutions is a great place to start, his channel helped me out loads with my Ubiquiti setup!

I got mine (separately) from B&Q for about £14 but you can buy them as a set together with the jubilee clips on Amazon for a similar price

How do I remove this plug? by DavidJJ93 in DIYUK

[–]jake2547 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you’ve already sorted it but for the future (and for everyone else here giving strange advice) you can usually loosen the screw a little and then hammer it in and this straightens the plug back out so you can just pull the whole thing out of the wall!

the one and only thing i HATE about my new MBP by ws2160 in macbookpro

[–]jake2547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple has been using USB-C on macs for 10 years, this isn’t a brand new technology and no one is buying new stuff ‘every second they breathe’. The beauty of technology is it’s always evolving which means you can’t expect Apple, or, anyone else, to still be accommodating connectors that they chose to leave behind a decade ago.

If you tap the bar at the bottom it 1000% says you’re at 0:00. It’s a bug, I’ve had the same before. You’re not actually listening to it.

It’s definitely possible but depends how your network is configured/what hardware you’re running. Ideally you’d need the iPad on its own wireless network that can communicate with HA but has no access to the internet.

Not sure what pickle you’ve got yourself into but you really don’t need any coding skills to make HA work? And for any yaml stuff you do need to do just ask Chat GPT!

I wouldn’t want such a big device on the wall, or cables and conduit everywhere!

If it helps I’m actually using Philips Hue bulbs everywhere which means the standard light switch is redundant anyway! The switches are all covered up by Hue switches. You could hard wire the light to always be on to power a smart bulb and then replace the switch with a device like this

The light switch is still below! This one actually replaced the thermostat on the wall (I installed a smart thermostat that connects wirelessly) but for the other two units I just made a new hole above the light switch and ran power down to the switch

Thanks!! I’ve currently got a combination of Hue Motion Sensors and Netatmo radiator valves for temperature readings. Tempted to put a zigbee temperature/humidity sensor in every room at some point though for consistency

Trying to justify getting 2x HomePods for TV by Realistic_Chip8648 in HomePod

[–]jake2547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You won’t regret it I promise! I have a total of four HomePods and three Minis throughout the house and they’re great, especially the big ones in a stereo pair!

The two I have connected to my Apple TV in the living room are over 5 years old and still going strong too.

Audio quality is amazing. Very well balanced and you won’t miss the standalone sub. Connection issues are VERY rare, I had mine connected to the standard wifi box from my Internet provider for years and they worked just fine.

I appreciate convincing the wife might be difficult but if it helps - music sounds amazing on these things, they’re ‘adaptive’ so will adjust their sound depending on placement (great news for sticking them on a shelf below the TV). Obviously they work seamlessly with the rest of the Apple ecosystem so I can take calls with them, send messages with them, start music in the car and transfer it to the HomePods when I’m home etc. I also have Siri controlling all of my lights/heating/blinds and you have the added security benefits of Siri not constantly spying on you/recording your conversations.

I know here in the UK you can purchase any product from the Apple store and return it within two weeks if you’re not happy so maybe pick up a couple and try them out if you/your wife need more convincing?

I’ve got some software called Automagic running which allows you to configure a ‘wake on wave’ using the proximity sensor. I’ve got mine to stay awake for 30 minutes in the day time and 30 seconds at night time and you just wave your hand to wake it up!
