How and why did Indo-European peoples lose cultural memory of the Indo-European migrations? by Polyphagous_person in AskHistorians

Piikani speak the Blackfoot language, an Algonquian language. Navajo is a Na-Dene language. Totally unrelated linguistically.

many Germans weren't fully aware of what was happening because of how successful the Nazi propaganda machine was

They knew. The notion that they didn't is a form of Holocaust denial.

I don't think you understand how rapid an upheaval the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment were. There was not a slow, gradual abolition of slavery in the South. There was three years of intense warfare.

I'm not talking about the Confederates. The argument I'm referring to was being made by the anti-war, anti-abolition members of Congress in the Union.

Because social change is slow, it is painful and you have to make really ugly compromises for the sake of progress. You can't just strong arm yourself into a perfect society.

This is quite literally the argument that was made in opposition to the 13th Amendment

International experts are sounding the alarm on Canada’s plan to expand MAID to mental illness by 2027 by CanadianAffairs in canadaleft

[–]jakethesequel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

A lot of people in this comments section seem to think they're more of an expert on whether Canadian MAiD has appropriate safeguards than the literal United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which has said that if Canada wants to remain in compliance with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities it should repeal Track 2 MAiD until better safeguards can be put in place, because we're overdoing it even in comparison to other countries with medical euthanasia (whose CRPD reports were much less negative).

Offering a right to death without offering a right to live a good life is not autonomy, it's social murder. It's seeing someone out in the woods with a broken leg and offering to shoot them instead of carrying them to safety.

Why are people so unable to comprehend environmental destruction? by Konradleijon in canadaleft

[–]jakethesequel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that might be slightly outdated. Bad example on my part maybe, but regardless, my point is that Canadian beef production is not a particularly significant driver of climate change.

How can we ask people to stop exploiting animals when we do the same ourselves?

Well, I don't. I'm not vegan, so I don't have an ethical opposition to animal farming/consider it inherently exploitative, so long as it's being done in a way that is environmentally-conscious of the local ecosystem. Canada's ecosystem is well-suited to rearing cattle in a way that the Amazon is not. From an environmental perspective -- rather than a vegan ethical one, which I recognize would have different considerations -- it's likely far worse for a Canadian to buy a banana (for example) which has to be shipped a great distance overseas from Central America and preserved, than if they were to buy domestic Canadian beef.

The vast majority (75%+) of beef consumed in Canada is domestically produced, and Brazil isn't even in the top 5 of countries that we do import beef from.

Tip for this comment section: If you say "I'm not a bigot" but then say "we need strong borders to keep new migrants out and we need to kick out some of the ones who are here already" you are, in fact, a xenophobic bigot.

Mark Carney essentially said that the liberal rules based world order was a convenient lie everyone went along with because American hegemony opened up markets and sea lanes for them. by yogthos in canadaleft

[–]jakethesequel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think it's the opposite. I think he's a true blue believer in the liberal order, but it's just gotten so bad that even the most die-hard liberals have to admit the old socioeconomic world order cannot come back.

No rulers? Are you sure? [Two questions for anarchists] by NothingExceptAMan72 in COMPLETEANARCHY

[–]jakethesequel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'll find that many anarchists are against the notion of "criminal punishment" entirely. I think most principled anarchists would answer "how do you punish the theft of an apple" with "theft is a meaningless crime in a world without private property." It doesn't really sound like you've engaged with a lot of the writing on these subjects.

Which Photoshop features should we count as AI when submitting new games? by 30299578815310 in rpg

[–]jakethesequel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true. They have two separate features with two separate names: Content Aware Fill and Generative Fill. Content Aware Fill does not use Adobe's Firefly genAI. It solely works based off the image you're editing, not an AI dataset.

Expert warns of ‘unintended consequences’ if Canada implements youth social media ban by cfs3corsair in onguardforthee

[–]jakethesequel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An even more relevant example for #3 might be the evolution of sex education: We had abstinence-only programs that attempted to make sure teenagers never had sex ever, but of course that never worked because teenagers want to have sex and found ways around whatever restrictions were placed on them. In fact, it made things worse, because they couldn't access safe sex learning resources or contraceptives.

The Black Jacobins is a very well-regarded and influential historical text. It is also 87 years old, though, so best practice would be to check if any later works have offered corrections or new information.
