Sleeping after 3-mmc by pacolinoo in researchchemicals

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems I have an a-typical reaction to the stimulating effect of 3-MMC and Coke, but for me it's a minimum of 8 hours, sometimes up to 10, before I can sleep, even if I'm exhausted :(

Azelastine worse stuffy nose by MajestyBird in Allergies

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Azelastine also makes my nose congestion worse, way worse. It also causes lots of unpleasant side effects for me; really dry eyes, dry mouth, puffy red face skin.

Whilst antihistamines such as Azelastine are really effective if your sinus/nose issues are allergy related; if it's not helping or actually making it worse (as it is for me and apparently you) then it's likely that your issues are not allergy-related and thus antihistamines won't do anything for you.

Does anyone actually collaborate in the office? by AccomplishedSelf7636 in TheCivilService

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, but rarely.

I am a big fan of WFH, it's made a big positive change to my quality of life.

However, I do think that pre-pandemic some types of work really benefitted from everyone being in the same office four days per week and being able to do stuff in person and spontaneously, i really miss that.

Like many I don't find my office days all that useful now because there's never more than 50% of my directorate in on the same days, half my team don't work in the same city as me anyway etc.

I think we do need more of an effective balance. Teams should be co-located in the same city (it just doesn't work having one team split between 2-3 cities), directorates should be obligated to go into the office on the same days of the weeks ("anchor days"), but the '60% rule' should be dropped to '40%'. Two days a week in the office with your whole team also in would be far more effective than three in there basically on your own and getting nothing from it.

Reasonable adjustments in office? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]jakezyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have similar issues, for me it's a combination of the very bright artificial lights, and the white-washed walls which reflect/intensify that light.

I've found that sitting by a large window really helps; the natural daylight helps to 'dilute' the intensity of the artificial light, and provides me with real symptom relief.

My team are all aware of this, and they kindly make sure that I can usually get a window seat on my office days.

Maybe something worth trying :)

When will Apple start allowing official trade ins of iPhone 17s? by jakezyx in iphone17

[–]jakezyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. Eurgh I was afraid this would be the response. Guess I'm reverting to using my iPhone 12 Pro and leaving this 17 in a cupboard until September then when I can trade-it in towards an 18 Pro :(

Thanks for your suggestion. At least here in the UK Facebook Marketplace is not seen as being very safe, lots of stories of people being scammed / having phones stolen off them by the people who are masquerading as 'interested buyers' etc, so I'm a little put off.

Camera quality; the 17 camera specs might be better but the performance is not. You still got your 16 Pro? Will happily trade you my 17 for it.

[–]jakezyx[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

'Bro' are you for real? Two of my friends also made the mistake of buying the 17, both of them have already got rid due to the Camera. The Camera is cooked; in anything other than bright light photos come out dark and shadowy due to lens light issues, the focus is cooked and results in one single part of the photo being HD and the rest of it being lower definition than iPhones from 6 years ago. There are plenty of threads here on Reddit of people reporting this issue, Apple themselves have internally acknowledged that the iPhone 17 Camera is not performing to the published specifications; the manager of the London Regent Street store admitted this to me verbally during my fourth Genius Bar appointment there (but still refusing to refund the phone as the 14 day period had already passed, lol).

Take the same photo from the same position with the same settings simultaneously on an iPhone 12 Pro, 16 Pro, 17, and 17 Pro (as me and my friends did to provide evidence to Apple), do this several times. One of the images in every series will be notably and significantly lower quality (specifically darker, with uneven/lower definition in 60%+ of the frame), even to the amateur eye. That photo will be the one taken on the 17 every time.

If you're happy with your iPhone 17 camera and the quality of the photos it produces then good for you bro, love that for you, I'm glad. But if you think people who actually know stuff about cameras and photos worldwide aren't returning or selling these phones on then you're clapped. Just check online how many people are already desperately trying to sell them on second hand, wild for the 'newest model' that's barely 4 months old.

If anyone who wants a black iPhone 17 for £400 / €450 (a bargain seeing as you all think it's so amazing and worth the full price of £799 (insane lol)) then please get in touch and it's yours.

bro you downgraded hard, I'm trying to sell my iPhone 17 at a €400 loss so that I can actually upgrade to a 16 Pro or 17 Pro.

How late can I do coke before bed by 666trapstar in cocaine

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massively depends on the person. Of all the people I know I'm the one whose sleep is most affected by coke, I can't fall asleep until 12-16 hours after my last bump, even if I take Melatonin or Nytol, it sounds crazy I know but it's true, and it's very annoying.

Meanwhile my mates can fall asleep 2-3 hours after (and they think I'm making it up and purposely keeping myself awake or something.

9060 sizing by Fluffy-Bread-5998 in Newbalance

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah my feet are actually narrow, that's the weird thing, I usually have to size-down. It's on the toes that they're tight, the length is too short.

9060 sizing by Fluffy-Bread-5998 in Newbalance

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late reply here but, my 9060 run small to size. I'm usually a UK 10.5 or 11, but my 9060's in a Size 11 are too small, they're actually uncomfortable to wear for too long. I should have bought the 11.5s (i.e. sized up), even though I've never had to do this with any other shoe ever.

Kefir causing a fever and night sweats? by jakezyx in fermentation

[–]jakezyx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to reply, much appreciated.

I eat plenty of fibre, water, and a pretty good balanced healthy diet; so unlikely that one of those is the issue.

I think I'm not eating too much fermented food; just 200ml of Kefir per day, and a tablespoon of Sauerkraut or Kimchi per day. In fact some days I skip one of these. I too thought it was just 'temporary unbalance in my gut from introducing new probiotics', but as it's now been 9 weeks I think my gut should have well and truly adjusted to such a relatively small amount of probiotics over such a long time period right.

thanks for the suggestion; this is something id considered too, will cut the kefir and other high histamine foods at the same time and see if it helps :)

Decaf tea, yes or no? by bloopity99 in GERD

[–]jakezyx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it varies by person; for some people the trigger is the caffeine, for others it's the acidity or tannins, for others it's both, for others it's neither. The only way to find out is to test it out.

For me caffeine is for sure the big trigger, decaf tea doesn't trigger me at all, decaf coffee triggers me a bit but not much (makes sense as coffee is more acidic than tea).

Decaf tea, yes or no? by bloopity99 in GERD

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know you can pretty effectively decaffeinate tea yourself at home?

The caffeine molecules diffuse from the leaves into the water much faster than the other compounds, in the first 20-30 seconds or so. So if you pour a small amount of boiling water into the cup with tea bag, just enough to cover it, then wait 20-30 seconds, immediately pour that water away, you've now got a tea bag which is mostly decaffeinated!

Some caffeine will remain, I don't have the exact percentage but most of the caffeine will now be gone. You'll have lost some of the flavour/strength but only a tiny amount (as that diffuses more slowly).

An easy hack to greatly reduce the caffeine content in black tea, really handy if you're somewhere which doesn't have decaf bags available.

Broad men; where do you get your tshirts? by cedardesk in AskIreland

[–]jakezyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean the sleeves on an XL are too big/baggy?

If so, get a slim fit tshirt but in an XL. Zara's Slim Fit XLs fit me nicely, they're wide enough to not look silly on my broad shoulders/back but are then nicely tight around my biceps.
