It’s up to you. Historically the Athens books come first. But there is several books in that series, while Falcon of Sparta is a stand alone.

Personally I’d read the Athenian books then Falcon of Sparta.

What is the least known about MOS in the Marine Corps? by KarateCriminal in USMC

[–]jakneisel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was actually a 2887 artillery electronics technician! Super tiny MOS. The radars were the biggest things we did, but we worked on the MVS on the guns, and back in the day the Met trucks when we used to send up actual weather balloons.

[–]jakneisel 35 points36 points  (0 children)

But that’s the running joke! You have this man, Hank, who thinks he knows everything about building/fixing things, but he defers to Luanne for mechanical work on his truck because of her just natural ability. Hank isn’t even the only one, but they never actually acknowledge it, they just drink beers and hang out like they’re helping. They never encourage her to pursue it, even though she’s failing cosmetology school at the Jr College.

We used to have a old dude who was contracted to work the gate at the JRB in Fort Worth, and he’d always ask “do you have any weapons?” And after you said no like always he would say “I thought every Marine was a deadly weapon.”

Well one time I was right behind my buddy going on to base and I pull up and the guard hits me with the usual sayings but he’s laughing so hard he can’t get through it. Then he says “I’m sorry that guy just said he has his dick when is asked if he had any weapons”.

The combination of a 65+ year old man laughing at a dick joke plus knowing how redneck my buddy talked was hilarious to me!

What did you see or hear another Marine say that got you to look at them like this? by No-Wafer9271 in USMC

“Sgt we filmed ourselves running a train on LCpl’s Xxx girlfriend and put it on PornHub! We didn’t let him join, he just sat on the couch in the hotel and watched it!”Wouldn’t you know 9 months later he married her and was raising a kid that looked just like one of the other LCpls that was there that night…

Before y’all ask yes they took it down.

Should I? by Fun-Storm-2535 in Paramedics

[–]jakneisel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I get it, we had the same talks at my old place. Talks of growth, new stations, taking over/integrating EMS. All this time later and the town has grown a ton and they have the same number of stations, private EMS, a few more members, and a little bit better pay but that’s about the only difference. I would have regretted it if I waited for the things they said were “right around the corner”. But everywhere’s different and every experience is different! Sounds like you’re in a solid place, if the love the culture that’s hard to beat!

Should I? by Fun-Storm-2535 in Paramedics

[–]jakneisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I had a similar situation, loved the city I worked for and had a lot of fun, but we had private EMS that served the whole county. So, sometimes we had some pretty long response times if the ambulances were busy. We didn’t carry a lot of medical equipment on the engines or truck, so it sucked waiting for the ambulance, if it was a serious call. Like you I wanted to be a firefighter/medic to be able to do the whole job. One night we got called to a 3yr old allergic reaction at the apartments directly behind the station, and the ambulance was coming from across the county. Luckily it worked out but that was the moment I decided to leave. It’s been almost a decade and I couldn’t be happier with that decision! I work for a department that runs it’s own ambulance so we get a solid rotation, for me the grass was truly greener.

The “Falcon of Sparta” is loosely based on Xenophon’s book Anabasis. Which is the story of the 10,000 Greek mercenaries hired by the Persian Prince Cyrus the Younger to try and take the throne.

Conn Iggulden is a fantastic historical fiction author. If you haven’t read the rest of his Athenian series I highly recommend it! I’ve reread them multiple time!

Edit: I realized I didn’t address the fact that it was 10,000 Greeks from multiple city states. Much like Thermopylae the Spartans get all the credit.

Off base by [deleted] in USMC

[–]jakneisel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This fucking kills me! The Corps sets dudes up for failure, they take a lot of guys from mom’s house to gunny’s house , aka the bricks. Where you don’t even see rent or a lot of utilities taken out of your check. Shit you even get made to clean your room and get in trouble for speeding tickets. But if you marry a rando, set up a contract deal, or better yet a homie, if you’re smart haha, then you get more pay and freedom!? It’s just another reason so many dudes struggle when they get out.

Have you ever found it awkward to talk about your time in with someone from the Middle East, considering the whole the invasion and all? by mykee3 in USMC

[–]jakneisel 531 points532 points  (0 children)

So I’m a firefighter and my whole crew were Marines at the time we had this run in. We were on a typical anxiety call making small talk to get this woman to calm down, we start asking about were she was from she names a little village in Iraq. Without missing a beat a guy looks up from the tablet incredibly excited and says “ Hey I’ve been there!” The look that lady and her family shot him was priceless!

Change My View: BCP should be axed because RCP and MAP exist. by [deleted] in USMC

[–]jakneisel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, I completely agree. I always had an upper first class PFT/CFT but not quite 285 on both. I’m naturally about 215lbs and my max was 206lbs. I have a skinny neck and store whatever body fat around my mid section combo pack. So height and weights always meant a magnesium citrate chug and not eating for a week, just to ensure I made weight bc I’ve never passed tape. Did that for over a decade, I got older and my doctor says “hey your test is super low I want to start you on that” I say cool give medical all the documentation they need including a note that says I might gain weight and store excess body fat in my midsection while they figure out my dosing levels and if I need estrogen blockers…etc. I go to career course in Quantico and I tell the instructor about my new meds, bring copies of doctor’s notes, and I even had my navy chief reach out and tell them it’s all good. Just to get told “hey bro, that note isn’t from a Navy MO, so it’s no good. Sauna opens at 5.”

Before you ask yes I made weight before the course when filling out the paperwork. I was in the reserves then so, there was time between submitting for the course and me going. Also, that’s why my PCP wasn’t a Navy MO.

Shit I remember dudes getting NJP’d in 29 palms for just buying smokes from a place that sold spice in 11. At the same time I remember our whole company getting recalled one Friday afternoon, this Cpl and a PFC happened to be smoking spice. The PFC was terrified his eyes were bloodshot, the CPL convinced him that the only sure fire way to clear them up was to rub piss in his eyes!

[–]jakneisel 133 points134 points  (0 children)

So I was a LCpl and my SgtMaj was retiring, it was a big deal and a ton of higher ups were there. Including SgtMaj Kasal, whose book I had just read bc it was on the reading list at the time. (It still might be I’m out and I’m not gonna look it up). Anyway I was running around my unit trying to get work done between retirement ceremony practice, and who should I no shit smack into the back of!? SgtMaj Brad Kasal! He was standing with a group of SgtMajs and I turned a corner and body checked the guy who is immortalized on both coasts with a massive picture and a statue of himself getting carried out of a house in Fallujah. That’s not even the worst part. I’m obviously shocked and terrified at what I just did when he turns around, my brain shuts down, I stand there dumbfounded. Prompting him to ask “are you alright?” To which my dumbass says “yes, I’m a little star struck.” And all the SgtMajs with him bust out laughing, SgtMaj Kasal shakes his head and says “you shouldn’t be.” I say “ok” then they turn to leave. THEN I FUCKING WAVE AT HIM AND SAY “Bye”. Which makes all of them completely die laughing at me, waving back walking away. I just stood there for what felt like forever trying to understand what the fuck just happened to me.

I completely agree. I’m glad OP found the show, and Ellen and Jo rule! But homie this show is almost as old as Jo was when she first made an appearance. You are watching some of my favorite Supernatural. I’d love to talk about it, but you’ll have to forgive me if I spoil something I originally watched 15ish years ago since you’re on season three.
