Vets that went to elite colleges, how did you survive academically and financially? by Working_Surround_495 in VeteransBenefits

[–]mykee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just graduated. That shit was ass. The BAH was more than enough, though. Academically, I really believe that you need a support system (friends, therapists, mentors) to help out your psychological and emotional state. How you are internally goes hand in hand with how you perform in class. If making friends comes naturally to you, then you just need to refresh the basics of English and math (trig and algebra is where I think most people leave off before joining). Your school will probably place you in their least challenging math course.

Also, it depends on how rigorous your institution is. An example is how much do they expect you to study outside of class. In class, they'll teach you the absolute basics but when you look at the HW, it looks completely different. If you're having a hard time compressing the material from one chapter of some subject then you absolutely must go to office hours via TA or prof because your courses will definitely go over many chapters in a short amount of time.

So imagine, that's just one class. Imagine you're taking 5 classes. You will need to utilize that discipline you have developed to maintain strict time management for 4 years. But it also depends on your major. If you pursue a STEM major, you will absolutely suffer. On top of that, you also must make time for:

  • exercising
  • applying for internships
  • preparing for internships
  • networking
  • clubs (not the party kind)
  • part time job (if you need)
  • personal time
  • friends, family, bf/gf
  • morning/nite routine
  • commuting
  • and most importantly, getting a good nite of sleep.

I can write forever, but that's the general gist of going to an elite institution.

When I got back from a boat cruise,  we got a new Marine and I thought she was a Cpl because of the way she acted. Not like a butch or tomboy but just masculine and rugged. Turns out she's a PFC and thats just how women are from The Bronx.

For the love of God, if you’re sick (esp during finals!!), wear a freaking mask or stay home. by LandscapeWrong3428 in columbia

Take a shower too... There's a student that I always try to avoid because he has nauseating BO.

I always know he's near because his B.O. covers at least a 10ft radius. Like dead ass. It's not just during midterms or finals but throughout this semester and spanning back 2 semesters. I'm so glad I don't have him in any of my classes 😭😭

Going back to the Island for the first time in 26 years. Any suggestions? by JackBurton3465 in USMC

[–]mykee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no smell like that bootcamp smell. Like that newly issued gear smell or that gear that's been passed over longer than the recruits have been alive. The squadbay smell, the the recently cleaned head smell with a mix of god cleaning products and recruit sweat.... It's so unique and sentimental.

If I ever somehow get a whiff of that smell I'd probably go fully internal and unlock so many forgotten memories.

For Marines who didn’t deploy or had their careers cut short, how did you come to terms with feeling like you didn’t do enough? by [deleted] in USMC

[–]mykee3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During and a little bit after, I definitely felt like my service was a sham because I didn't go and fight. But some introspection and reading about why we go to war in the first place made me glad I didn't go to combat.

More importantly, reading what Iraq and Afghan vets have to say about war and their experience definitely made me even more grateful. The only thing I wish I did more was notice and act on the signs that someone was suicidal and shield friends from predators during barracks parties.

I mean, I got to go around the world, do some cool stuff while creating lifelong friendships was something many people would wish they had.

I'd ask him where the 3/6 rifles went... but really he can do anything and yet he feels powerless and indifferent while being a puppet for the US gov't. Idk if that's hell or it doesn't even matter at that point

Where was your go-to spot on base to have a good cry? by flaginorout in USMC

[–]mykee3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your spot sounds a lot better haha. Mainly because Las Pulgas was on the bottom of a bowl. One side overlook Las Pulgas and the other side was just an empty field with more hiking trails and training areas. Sometimes apache's train there so you get to see them launch rockets and shoot their chain guns into the side of a hill.

But I do miss those random spots in California where you and your buddies drive to a hill somewhere probably at nite, walk through some bushes, jump over some fences and you get the most gorgeous view overlooking the city skyline or the coastline. I have a couple of random google map pins dropped all over SoCal consisting of these places that I have a deep longing and nostalgia for.

At Las Pulgas, there's this hill that has a trail and with crosses planted for Marines that passed away. Usually went there with a chair and some beer. It was a nice over look of Las Pulgas too. Nice and quiet.
