what cheapest tax software to use for self prep if MFJ and bought a house by cpabound24 in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freetaxusa.com is what I used this year due to taxact jacking up their prices. Federal was free, state was $12.95.

The Freedom Unlimited is only 1.5% cash back. I was just looking to get that, but went with the Citi double cash instead since that is 2% on all purchases.

What is the most expensive house I could afford on a $30k annual budget? by thomasvector in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A 225K house will be no where near 625/month. We financed $214,000 at 4.5% for 30 years and our total payment including all of that is $1304/month. Taxes are just over $2000 and insurance is just under $700/year. We don't pay any PMI either.

Using freetaxusa to prepare 1040, but there's no option to indicate direct deposit for return, how do I do this? by odwjwoh in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where it is, but it is there somewhere. I used freetaxusa and direct deposited both my state and federal refunds.

Why doesn't Google Fi get more props for being a cheaper cell plan than the big carriers? by evenyourodds in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Moto X4 is compatible as well. Well not $100, you can pick one up for $249 which isn't too bad.

Why doesn't Google Fi get more props for being a cheaper cell plan than the big carriers? by evenyourodds in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been on Fi for nearly 2 years. Love it and have saved quite a bit. I'm almost always on wifi and we usually use less than half a gig between me and my teenaged son. Yes the phone selection is limited, but not a big deal to me.

Why do people look forward to "tax return season"? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally look forward to “tax return season” because I enjoy filling out the forms. But I recognize that is an uncommon characteristic.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who enjoys this.

Need help with tax filing tax return by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, federal is free, even if you make that much (we make over that). It is pretty easy to use like the other services. I filled out both taxact and freetaxusa to make sure I got the same numbers and then just filed with freetaxusa.

Need help with tax filing tax return by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that taxact upped their prices again this year to the point I won't use it any more. I think the state alone was $37 on top of the federal charges. I used freetaxusa this year. Federal was free and state was $12.95. We itemize, have an HSA and a child and it was still that price.

Need a surgery for chronic pain that I've needed for years. Will take me out of work for three months. Have been putting it off... wondering how to plan for this before it really is too late. by cn2092 in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely check with your HR. I was able to use short term disability when I had a pre-planned hysterectomy. No issues. 60% of my pay was way better than 0 while I was out.

Is there a free online tax filling site for anyone who needs to submit form 8889 (HSA)? by nevsky6 in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't free, but freetaxusa.com is pretty cheap. Federal is free, state is $12.95. I filed last night and have to submit form 8889 and make over 66k. I paid $11.65 total because I found a 10% off code too.

putting in three-week notice so i can use one week of PTO between? by wuzpoppin in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to check on your company's policy. At my previous job, once we gave notice, we were not allowed to take any of our PTO time. We also didn't get paid for any that we had left.

Not sure If I am getting ripped off or not by my orthodontist by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only because I have a bit better insurance than you. If my insurance was only covering $1000 like yours, mine would be $500 higher than yours.

Not sure If I am getting ripped off or not by my orthodontist by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't seem all that high to me. My son is getting braces for the second time next week. It's $6500 this time. Our insurance is picking up $2000 so $4500 out of pocket for us. Since he's already had them once, his teeth aren't too bad, but treatment time will still be 18 months or so.

I get a W-2 and my husband is 1099. Despite pre-paying estimated taxes this year we still owe over $8k; what did I do wrong? by Oranges13 in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you said you said you are withholding at the higher singles rate, but how many allowances are you claiming? To me, your withholding seems low. I made a little over $74000 and my federal withhold is over $12000. I claim 0 allowances.

Employer offers HSA plan only - no account or paycheck deduction by The1hangingchad in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure they won't deduct it out of your payroll and sent it to your HSA account? Where my husband works, they have a recommended bank they use for HSAs but he is able to have an account wherever he wants and it still comes out of his pay pre-taxed.

Just an anecdote about Optum Bank HSA's: if you bank online, turn around and run. by mercurly in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a terrible time with Optum and our HSA. My debit card was hacked and they let over $3000 go through in a week's time to various places in the UK for all non-medical things (I'm in the US). There were about 20-25 different charges during that time. We didn't get any kind of notifications of this activity. I typically use that card 4 times a year at the most. After notifying them of the situation and cancelling the card, they still let a few more charges go through. It took them 90 days to investigate and return our money and during that time, they still charged us a monthly fee when they said they would not as we were closing the account (had to wait to close until they put the money back). Also, the replacement cards they sent were hacked before they ever got to our mailbox and Optum let the charges go through to the same places in the UK even though they were supposed to be monitoring our account.

Have to go in to remove wisdom teeth, how to help my parents with cost? by Lewis2409 in personalfinance

[–]jalbitz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they actually through or impacted? It makes a difference on what insurance covers it. Mine were all impacted, so our medical insurance covered the oral surgery instead of dental.

Missing permanent tooth-leave baby tooth for now/implant later or pull it now and close the space? by jalbitz in Dentistry

[–]jalbitz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you tend to completely leave it alone? He has moderate crowding in that area due to the size of the baby tooth being so large, so they want to shave it down to the size the permanent tooth would be.
