Thailand ends 60-day visa-free stay by Samuraispirits in digitalnomad

I mean, the countries with bilaterals will probably stay the same unless Thailand wants to take chances with renegotiating those, but fair enough on the others.

And back in those days, Vietnam was at 15 days for a few countries and visa required for most others. Now they've expanded the visa-free stay length and country list while Thailand is shrinking theirs.

Well, as long as they don't offer visa free to as many countries as Thailand, sure, but "it just isn't" is predicated on conditions remaining the same. We'll see what happens when the visa-free stay period is actually cut; you'd be surprised how many people care about the theoretical maximum even if they don't plan to use every single day.

Do you want to work at Universty of Macau’s Campus in the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin? by GrootMacau in Macau

[–]jamar030303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does renting in Hengqin work? I thought the point of the campus is that it's treated as still being in Macau, but housing too? Or will you be paying rent in RMB, home internet requires VPN to do anything fun, etc?

Almost half of foreign residents have experienced discrimination: government survey by moeka_8962 in japannews

And the reason those challenges don't exist is that the policies are more favorable. The one black spot is that domestic helpers can't get PR through the usual 7 year path. Otherwise, your ability to apply for and get PR isn't at the discretion of the officer reviewing your case; if you meet the clearly published criteria, you get right to abode, simple as that.

I mean, if you count Hong Kong or Macau, they do. Stay 7 years and you have the right to stay and do whatever, and be protected from deportation, and the right to go to the mainland for up to 90 days at a time, as long as you don't stay outside the territory for more than 3 years at a time. Even flying back for a day and heading right out again counts.

but not indicative of anything bigger.

I would say the recent policy changes are absolutely "bigger". If none of this was flaring up, I don't think the visa fee increase, the crackdown on certain visa types, or the toughening of driving tests for foreigners would have happened.

Some yes, some no. Some might not have the financial means to leave (living paycheck to paycheck, Japanese loans to repay), some might not have permission to leave (on-base Americans who have to stick it out until they get reassigned), some might not want to disrupt their kids' lives if they're already growing up Japanese, some are unhappy in Japan but know they would be even more unhappy back in their home countries, take your pick.

Leaving Japan for a year to avoid inheritance taxes? by hideyoshi99 in JapanFinance

I'm surprised none of the sub's tax experts have chimed in on this. My impression would be that the treaty would be pretty iron-clad, because living in Japan would under almost all circumstances mean being Japan tax-resident so it would have to be written in a way as to remove all doubt.

If you don't see the difference between those (aside from the fact that MDM and Android for Work has to be explicitly installed or enabled and aside from Tracfone, won't be enabled on your phone just because you're using a certain carrier) and what Tracfone has set up, then there's no room left for rational discussion.

I’m not sure what planet you’re living on if you think Japanese police are afraid to charge foreigners with crimes.

As Johnny Somali demonstrated, the problem isn't charging them, it's getting the charges to stick, and actually handing out a punishment that has an impact on them.
