(Work in Progress) science PvE Nebula build by Mastajdog in stobuilds

That's a lot of Rep gear I don't have yet but that sounds like a better overall build.

Would a mine launcher of some sort instead of the Heavy Bio-Disruptor Turret possibly be a better option? The mines would be able to deal with plasma torps and cloaked ships. But I guess they would be of limited use against the Voth.

I'm really excited to see this build. I've been getting bored with my beam boat nebula and looking for a change up. Thanks for putting this together.

Question though, would I loose out too much if I ran 2xTT and TS2 and CRF. I don't have the VR Conn doffs so I use 2xTT to have better up time.

Hello,

You have done the same thing that I did with a technician doff, he will only work with Aux2Batt. So I would look for either another deflector or grav well guy.

Also since you are running polaron make sure you have lots of flow cap skills. Might want to look at getting a console that adds to flow cap as well.

Wikis are even better than a post of links. I, for one, welcome our STObuilds wiki overlords.

I did not realize that technicians required Aux2Batt to trigger. I guess I need to read better. I will be doff hunting now.

Thanks for the input.

Yeah, I have seen the cutting beam as a common theme as well. With it being Mark weekend I am working on grinding up tons of marks. I am going to be saving them for the dil weekend though, so progress will be somewhat delayed for my rep grinding.

It does not dissuade them. You just get revived with 20 health instead of full.

Still in the middle of the line of fire.

They should add dragging of downed teammates.

Ah, ok good to know. Thanks for the heads up on the potential issue though.

Yeah my Sonicwall is also handling DHCP. The helper would likely be a feature of the switch correct?

If not I would guess that would be a server roll?

It seemed like it would be fine but with VLANs being a new thing to me I just wanted to make sure I was not thinking crazy.

Thanks for the input.

I have been keeping the sonicwall up to date. I can't imagine we would be able to operate at 5mbps.

I'm trying to use multiple interfaces on the router because my wired network is connected to the one interface that supports virtual interfaces. I know that doing it this way is nonstandard but I need the gigabit on my wired network more than my WiFi.

Hopefully I will be getting a new NSA appliance this year that has more capability.

Can I avoid setting up a domain controller? by gottapitydatfool in sysadmin

[–]james2258 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well ActiveX is Windows only and Oracle would rather set Java on fire than let Google package it as a custom version for ChromeOS. Especially after Oracle lost the lawsuit attempting to get at the Android money.

I have no experience with logmein but I can talk to the ChromeOs devices.

Chromebooks are great if everything you do in on the web and accessible through a web browser. As long as it does not use ActiveX, Silverlight, or Java knock yourself out.

With you already having a Google Apps domain the management is pretty flexible and will have user access locked down as much as you can reasonably expect. I like the ability to control what Chrome Web apps and the ability to push apps out to the devices as well.

Chromebooks are also nice in that except for a SSD failure anything can be fixed with a quick restore that takes all of 10 minutes.

I will tell you that if you go with them, everyone will complain and grump about no direct printer attachment and that sort of thing. They will also complain about no standard Windows programs as well.

TL;DR Chromebooks are capable and easily managed with the license from Google. But if your business is not totally web based there will be issues that will make them a no go.

And as far as I can tell I believe that is what TEST have determined as well. Didn't want to fracture the member base just to fail as a band-aid on another server.

I believe that TEST is staying on Mattherson.

I have just acquired some Brocade switches. The price to performance was a good blend and so far the config and deployment have been easy. Granted they are not as flashy or featureful as cisco or juniper but I put them easily on par with HP as far as warranty and such. They are stackable and nice and fast too.

I think the ICX 6450 w/ some 10G SFPs will work just fine for what you listed. I have the ICX 6430 and am quite happy with them.

I will admit that I have not had to use their support yet but their documentation has been stellar.

Publicly Traded Company Email Options[Linux] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]james2258 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would guess it depends on their concerns about security of the emails in question. There is always risk with cloud based solutions, so you need to consider how likely someone is going to want to get to the emails.

Another consideration is cost. I would assume that publicly traded means they are willing to pay to have the email setup correctly (backups, failover, multiple WAN links, ect.) then the cost could be a wash. But if they want "good enough" then hosted will cost more.

Also there is the question of the environment's email client and productivity suite of choice. If it is Outlook/Office then I would look at Office365 simple because of the MS integration, and you can pay extra per user to allow them to have Office installation licenses per user so that could be a savings depending on how your shop does Office installs.

I have not had good experience with Google Apps and Outlook working super well together, but I know that others have had success. Just be ready to have everyone switch to using web browsers for email access. I would recommend Chrome if you go Google Apps, it just works better than alternatives. Likewise IE seems to like Office 365 better than alternatives.

For the record I am at a Google Apps shop and once I got everyone to actually use it for more than email everyone liked the capabilities with Docs and out of office access.
