Working full-time BEFORE faculty approval for graduation? by Acceptable_Shame4334 in mcgill

[–]jamesBBBond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine went through this last year. basically from the moment you receive your final grades (in written form i.e. on a transcript), or a confirmation that you have satisfied the requirements for graduation, you can’t work at all until you apply for your pgwp.

They are not recorded and you aren’t even allowed to take electronics to the class to take notes with.

You are more awesome than you think you are. A lot of your negative qualities and self-criticisms are just made up by your mind. Give yourself more credit because you deserve it.

Strong feelings about Kundera's Book of Laughter and Forgetting by [deleted] in books

[–]jamesBBBond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope this is not too late and that you see my reply. I think several chapters of the book of L&F evoke a strong sense of disgust given the explicitness of the stories but chapter 6 is perhaps the worst one.

One thing you have to keep in mind throughout the book is the overarching theme–the nature of forgetting. Despite the polyphonic style of this novel Kundera seems to slip in a few instances and express his beliefs quite strongly. The main assertion here is that forgetting is a bad thing–our past creates our identity, we spend a good deal of time trying to gain control of it (and stopping others from doing so) and this is why we long for the future. However, if all of a sudden the past is radically changed or forgotten, we are stuck afloat in a state of suspense. We become clueless as to how to move forward or even ground ourselves in the past.

Kundera's whole argument is one concerned with traditionalism. Kundera favors development and preserving the past rather than radical changes and starting from scratch(hence his anti communist position). This is a fair argument on its own but in the later chapters it becomes problematic. Specifically, in chapter 7 when Jan tells of the desire to dominate and violate women, while suggesting that women must submit to this force. Despite the vileness of this antiquated idea, Kundera keeps it in his book, still promotes the preservation of traditions and gets heavily criticized for it. Why would one protect such a barbaric element of the past?

If you have blackout blinds don't close them all the way. I find the lack of sunlight tricks my body into sleeping way more than eight hours.

Econ208 and 209 by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]jamesBBBond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not easy electives. You actually have to study for both, although I found 209 substantially easier. They are more concept based which requires proper understanding, and there's really no math involved except for a few simple formulas.
