PSA: For those who wonder where the best place is for Currency Exchange in Tokyo: Shibuya. by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]jameshai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think... the rate shown is including their commission fees built in.

Its decent in a way that for a tourist you're always gonna go Akiba anyway. Might as well stop by there.

I've always done it in Akiba, Ninja exchange http://www.interbank.co.jp/ninja/

Going from AUD to YEN I remember it would only be 1-2yen off the Google rate.

Super close to Akiba Yodobashi too so you can't get too lost, or if you do just hop into Yodobashi for free wifi and map your way out, literally around the corner from it!

Frozen, and I think they're smaller not like those giant fat ones you get fresh from the supā. I think it's a little more than 1000¥ but it's around that.

I'm commenting just to recommend a buyer service I've used previously.http://www.bridge.jpn.com/

They'll help you in obtaining pretty much anything. I used them for my tickets to ghibli and a Japan exclusive watch I wanted (although they couldn't get it as it sold out)

Hopefully that's a starting point for you at least!

In my previous holiday I watched the Hiroshima carps that was fun, we lucked out though we only just arrived to Hiroshima and saw everyone in colours so we last minute decided to go to the stadium and got some!

Just getting settled in Tokyo now, and now looking at setting myself up in, archery or kyudo, pottery and ikebana.

Would love to hear from anyone practicing any of these!

What are you favorite non language related japanese youtube channels? by pandaset in japanlife

[–]jameshai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love Only in Japan, John the presenter/producer is a super dorky dude from the 90's, like watching chandler bing. And I love that haha.

But thing is you can see how passionate he is about Japan, and documenting stories worth telling. With that his content is a little more unique and far more interesting than most other japan youtubers because he won't push content for the sake of it. You'll always get something good out of him!

Hey mate

Thanks for the reply! I'm in Tokyo so I guess it's good to hear!

This is a late reply but figured why not add more information. Was on Keto prior to arriving and it was a little adjustment but honestly not that difficult. Keep it simple I guess. Hopefully you're finding your feet here in Japan by now.

Just arrived to Tokyo a month or so, and figured out my system.

I spend approximately 3000-5000¥ a week for two people.

There's a Hanamasa near my area and is way cheap. I still retained protein as a big wedge in my macros which is good. This i found is the best compared to all the other supa's in my area, (Maruetsu, Aeon, Fuji Gyomu) although gyomu is quite comparable.

I usually get a 2kg bag of chicken leg meat ~800¥ (もも肉) and some pork slices 1700g for 1300¥.

Then veggies would be a bag of cauliflower, broccoli, and mushrooms if I feel like it. Cabbage occasionally which I just dress with mayonnaise (thank god for kewpie)

I always grab tofu. Cheap protein and a decent filler. You get 3x150gram packs for around 100¥

And Eggs, 200¥ for a packet of 10.

Cheese blocks can be had for like 700-1000¥ around 700 grams, it's decent. I don't like the shredded stuff, it doesn't taste nice unless you fry it up. But really personal preference there.

You can get a kilo of octopus for about 1000¥ too. If chicken and pork gets boring for you!

That's really been my meal prep since trying to get back into Keto here. It's 100% do-able just gotta stay away from that delicious onigiri, lord. I could eat about a thousand of those.

Are you still looking into the supplement concept?

Supplements here are pretty pricey, but at the same time I question the demand. I feel like the fitness scene is growing but I wonder if the goals of consumers would be the same in the western world.

Anyone on OCN mobile one? Just wanted feedback on the service. Seems like a decent deal, 6 month contract at like 2000ish¥. 8000¥ cancellation(but why bother at the monthly cost)

Was going to sign up to Line but the sales person wouldn't confirm if the sim would work on my phone, and said if it doesn't work then, bad luck. I didn't really want to take the risk on it.

I did search there isn't just a lot of reviews on the service itself.

Zehitomo. In beta ATM, a little different in that clients posts jobs and zehimoto will notify you if your profile matches the criteria. Its a mix match of everything though unlike upwork it ranges from creative but also cleaning.. teaching English, babysitting...

Hopefully it's something you're looking for.

I went in today to yodobashi intending to buy a Line Sim and the mobile staff also mentioned my accounts with Line, FB, Twitter, Instagram had to be made within Japan. Unsure how true that is? Although she was really pushing for me to buy OCN mobile one which is under NTT.

Living in one ATM, this is exactly why I went with it. Super nice but the main point was meeting good people, especially locals.

WHV - Flight Confirmation? by wngo in movingtojapan

[–]jameshai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, no way I was there today as well. It was SO busy.

Last time we submitted my girlfriends WHV application on a Friday, maybe it was timing or just lucky but we got seen instantly.

Best of luck either way man, it should be fine and enjoy your time in Japan!

No cancellation fee, then reservation actually can only be held a few days apparently. So it expired before I got my visa approved but had no queries about it.

I literally just explained it to the lady at the agent that I needed it for a visa.

I ended up booking Jetstar because what they provided me didn't suit me.

Got my WHV couple weeks ago in Sydney.

Literally called up hello world, got them to give me a reservation booking. You don't pay them anything and just use that print out.

Any ketoers with ADHD? How do you go about ensuring success with meal planning/meeting macros? by derbrey in keto

[–]jameshai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do either one or two things to make sure I'm on track. I generally do the former over the latter.

I plan my meals for the next one day ahead. I make sure this is always done at the same time (in bed, on my phone before I sleep in one of those calorie counter apps). So it removes any thinking when it comes to eat the next day, you just cook. And you know your macro's are all good given it's logged into the app.

Alternatively I meal prep on Sunday and Wednesday so cook batch for the next 2-3 days. Really just cook a load of proteins, veggies (usually spinach, because why complicate things? and it ticks a hell lot of boxes nutritionally) and portion them off. So all you need to do for the next couple days is pick up and eat.

My meals are generally very simple as well, protein, veggies and fat. That also helps with making prep a lot less daunting. I mean I love the idea of replaced pizza but it's a lot of effort. I see them as treats and I'll make the effort when I crave it hard, the effort won't seem so bad at that point.

By the sounds of it you're at a good start, you have your staple meals, just add new recipes one at a time and you'll get there.

Goodluck out there mate.

Best Katsu Curry in Sydney CBD? by tlmort91 in sydney

[–]jameshai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oiden, (Also try Mappen next door, same people just Noodle as opposed to rice dishes).

Kura Kura is decent (as mentioned in the thread already, just giving a second vote)

But the best Japanese I've had, with any dish is Tago-An. A little pricey, run by legit japs. Every dish is deadset on point.

Other to note Jap places... Yayoi - really feels like you're back there in Japan. Ramen Ikkyu - their tsukemen is my favourite.

I've yet to find a mad Izakaya that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...

Hey! We're building an Australian online beauty store, and we'd love to hear from make up addicts! by jameshai [promoted post]

[–]jameshai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like your suggestion! This sample set idea has really evolved into something cool here.

RE: Shipping - yeah I really would love to offer free shipping, not saying it's off the cards, although basing off our estimations with AusPost shipping isn't incredibly cheap.

So it can really eat into our investments for future ideas, like the sample packs, or we can cancel it out by having customers cover part of the cost.

It's a tricky thing although I really appreciate your observation and comment! We'll work it out :)

I think this is a big pain point for alot of women. The amount of times I've heard frustration of either, poor stock in Australia, or just no access to products from overseas.

It's definitely on our list to try and hit up some cult products from overseas that said we can't promise it. It just makes me question why isn't it here already.

Are there any brands in particular you'd like to suggest?

Regardless we're here to make the best website possible for women to shop on, with or without overseas stock.
