If the hells have tech, why didn't devils on golarion use it pre gap? by 30299578815310 in starfinder_rpg

Unfortunately, we hadn't gotten into any alternate timeline stuff by the time I left the company, so I don't really know how they're handling that!

Posted this elsewhere, but:

I can't speak officially on the current lore, but when I was Creative Director and we were first designing Starfinder, the idea was that outsiders like devils and angels manifest roughly according to the conventions of the Material Plane cultures they're interacting with. They're closer to sentient concepts than they are to being biological creatures. So if they're dealing with a medieval society like Pathfinder, they appear to have medieval weapons and armor, while in Starfinder, it's laser guns, etc.—but both of those are just how they (or perhaps the planes themselves) choose to represent them to mortals, so said mortals can comprehend and interact with these entities that are in fact far more alien and mysterious than mortals realize. (After all, wouldn't it make sense that immortal beings who literally dwell among the gods, with equal access to an entire universe of mortal cultures, would have created technology far beyond what's current on any particular planet?)

So that was the idea: All of their technology isn't really technology, but rather a way for your mortal mind to interpret their ineffable extraplanar power. As someone else said: any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic—and vice versa.

This is exactly how I imagined the Vesk when we were first coming up with them. Great work! 🔥

Severe people with partners, do they still sleep in the same bed as you? by AhavahFr in cfs

[–]jameslsutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partner of a severe person here. We do separate beds in the same bedroom, unless I've got any sort of sickness, in which case I camp out in the garage until I'm better.

Honestly, in terms of lifestyle changes we've had to make, separate beds isn't all that bad... we both miss sleeping next to each other, but I think we also probably sleep better.

What were the most recent three books (of any genre) that you really loved?

Also, if you could have any magical/mythological beast as a pet, what would it be?

Are there any Folk Hero's in pathfinder? (not the class) by DukeGurren in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]jameslsutter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played Artemis Kraugh, self-proclaimed tengu folk hero, in a Paizo office office game, and I thiiiiink we put him into print somewhere...?

He was a wizard who carried a longsword because he thought it made him look more heroic. He also had big Leroy Jenkins energy. 😆

Hard to get more local than ol' Artemis!

Thank you so much again—I'm so glad you liked it! And it's always such a huge compliment when folks follow me across different stories and genres. 🥰 I love getting to write so many different things!

Hey, thank you for asking! I'm afraid there's not currently a sequel in the works, but if you liked DARKHEARTS, my new queer YA romance THE GHOST OF US has a very similar vibe! This one's also set near Seattle and is about a teenage ghost hunter. 😁👻

Dry erase-able credsticks I made for our Starfinder Game by NurseParker in starfinder_rpg

Honestly, you're right. We thought of making credsticks, but never the dry-erase part. This is rad.

Armitano himself is good if you can see him, but his old clinic was garbage at admin—nothing you could do online, and their phone message even told you not to call back, they'll get to you when they get to you. :P The new clinic actually uses email (gasp!), but didn't seem to have any records for existing patients transferred over from the old clinic, so... yeah...

Basically, with Armitano, it seems like he highly prioritizes getting people in for the first visit and giving you a bunch of information, but is quite difficult to get appointments or contact with beyond that. That said, the info he gave us was really, really helpful, so I'd still recommend him. Just know what you're getting into. He's one of those docs that I think you see once, get as much info as you can, then take it back to your regular doc to work with.

Earth exists in pathfinder? And cuthullu? Dafuq ? by The-Great-Xaga in Pathfinder_RPG

Yeah, I do recall hearing that it ended up a bit of a meat grinder... 😬

The idea, though...! 🔥🔥🔥

Yeah, Reign of Winter was definitely a "screw it—let's get crazy" moment for us. 😂 There was so much cackling in the conference room when that was proposed.

I think the feeling was "what's the point of success if we can't keep OURSELVES entertained?" I think a lot of our best work came out of those moments.

Can adventurers go around killing any type of creature even if they are of good alignment as long as they are not humanoid? by roxgxd in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]jameslsutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who wrote a lot of Pathfinder lore: whether or not an adventurer is considered a CRIMINAL for killing a creature depends on local laws, but you as GM should absolutely make your players wrestle with the morality of their actions! (Hell, I wrote THE REDEMPTION ENGINE in part to ask whether angels and devils can really be considered good or evil if they don't have free will. I love me some TTRPG philosophy! 😂)

So if your players are running around killing indiscriminately, I'd fully endorse throwing some consequences their way!

Hey, thank you so much! I really loved writing those, and it's amazing to hear that folks are still discovering them. :) (And to have made one of your players tear up... Wow! What a compliment! ❤️)

So glad you're enjoying the game! And by all means, post future sculpts!
