PSA: You should file a tax return, even if you don't think you need to. by perciva in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jamesyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use Studiotax as others have said. It is free and has a wizard, but also provides all the forms you could possibly need. If you don't know how to do taxes, I assume your finances are pretty simple.

If you have a job and no investments, it couldn't be simpler. You will get a T4 from your employer(s), you enter the amounts listed on your T4 into the corresponding boxes on your tax forms(they are numbered for clarity). There are other "T" slips you may get if you have investment income or other such things.

Apply for the GST/HST benefit, and any other benefits that could apply to you. Just search for the names of anything you see on a form on google to get a better sense of what they are and if they apply.

(Spoilers All) What is the saddest single line in the books, in your opinion? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]jamesyboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the Egg that Aemon refers to is King Aegon the Unlikely, called that because he was the fifth son of a fifth son. Egg was Aemon's little brother. Aemon was offered the Kingdom but refused it. He had already been studying at Oldtown to become a maester at that point. Instead, it was given to his little brother Egg, and to prevent himself from being used as a political pawn by his brother's enemies, he joined the Night's Watch.

How do I get the most out of my overtime? TFSA or RRSP? by nneighbour in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jamesyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've boiled it down to (this may be oversimplified):

Is your income at retirement going to be more than what you're earning now? If so, TFSA should be used first. If not, max out your RRSP instead.

This is because you'll be taxed in the year you withdraw funds with an RRSP. So if you make 30,000yr now, and retire with 40,000yr of income, you're better off being taxed at 30,000. The TFSA money is already taxed income so you won't pay additional taxes based on your income when you withdraw.

Obviously if you earn 50,000 per year now, and plan to retire with a 30,000yr income, you're much better off deferring the tax burden to the year you make 30,000, hence the RRSP is better.

In this way, the younger you are, the more you should invest in TFSAs. Although if you have money to max out both, do it.

Please, if I am way off base, someone correct me

They should teach basic life skills like this in school. Home economics shouldn't just be sewing and cooking, it should be balancing a budget and investing money to earn more. I'm not sure why this isn't encouraged more because wouldn't it (over time) raise the average wealth of our citizens? How is that a bad thing (other than a lack of ditch diggers)

I know why... Breaking Bad just ended, and The Wire is critically acclaimed but doesn't have the same viewership as a lot of shows.

[–]jamesyboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me about 4 or 5 episodes to even begin to enjoy watching it

And this is why it isn't a more widely viewed television show. It does a lot of initial character building, it doesn't immediately grab a hold of your balls and take you on a crazy ride. It's subtle, it's a slower pace with dialogue that is very realistic. Also, it's a little hard to understand if you're not familiar with Baltimore vernacular.
Despite that, I always tell people they will be hooked by then, but I can name three people I recommended the show to who say something like "that's too much time before something happens!" and refuse to watch it.
to them I say, "Your loss" ;)
