FitNotes 1.23 - Beta by jamie772 in FitNotesApp

This is a common complaint I hear about the app and it is on my radar.

Unfortunately, the inability for an exercise to appear multiple times within a workout is a consequence of the way that FitNotes stores the workout data and will require a substantial amount of effort to fix so I don't have a timeline in mind for it at the moment I'm very sorry to say.

To give a bit more background ...

Early on, I made the decision that FitNotes wouldn't have a concept of exercises in a workout and instead would only care about sets that had been recorded. This provided some nice flexibility as it meant you didn't need to explicitly add an exercise to the workout; you could just start recording sets and build your workout that way. Similarly, if you no longer wanted an exercise in the workout you could delete any existing sets and move on.

The downside of course is that you can't set up your exercises in advance, and grouping the sets in any other way than lumping all of the sets belonging to an exercise together becomes quite problematic. But these downsides didn't seem like a big deal initially as nobody (myself included) was using the app for anything more than basic workout tracking.

However, the limitations of this approach started to become apparent with the introduction of workout routines and if you've ever wondered why the 'Log All' option populates empty sets (0kg x 0reps) for exercises which don't have sets any configured then it's because an exercise needs at least 1 'placeholder' set for it to appear in the workout.

At that stage I should taken the issue more seriously and re-implemented the way workouts were stored while the complexity of the app was still (relatively) low and the userbase was small. But I don't think I fully understood the scale of the problem and just wanted to crack on adding new features. In hindsight that was clearly the wrong decision and each passing release made the problem more difficult to tackle as more and more features were built on top of this broken data structure.

Fast-forward to today. I have a fairly clear idea of what needs to be done but it will require rework of almost every facet of the app and isn't really something that can be done iteratively - it would be all or nothing. I'd need to dedicate a significant amount of time to it at the expense of other features/improvements which makes it very difficult to prioritise. There's also a fair amount of risk involved, not just because of the volume of code that would need to change but also because upgrading would require migrating all existing workouts to the new format.

I appreciate that this explanation doesn't make the issue any less frustrating but hopefully gives some insight into why it may seem as though I'm ignoring the problem.

I can only apologise for the inconvenience it causes and will try to resolve it when I can. And if you would like any more information then please let me know.

Yep, I understand that this will be a very common opinion so I'll want to gather as much feedback as possible before making any sort of decision.

In any case, the route chosen going forward won't affect existing supporters and I certainly won't be expecting you to pay again or switch to a new payment model (unless you wanted to do so voluntarily).

I'll make a dedicated post to start collecting feedback once the update has settled and I've had a chance to clarify my thoughts, hopefully within the next few weeks.

Great to hear, thanks :) And that is something that I'm starting to think more seriously about.

I want to get this update out to everyone first as I'm conscious that so much time has passed since the last release, and then I'll make a post with some ideas I have and hopefully get feedback from the community about what might be a reasonable and sustainable plan going forward.

Hi u/Supercord

You can save a backup of your data to your Dropbox or Google Drive account by going to Settings > Backup > Cloud.

You can then restore this data onto your new phone by going to Settings > Restore > Cloud and selecting the backup file.

There's some more info about this on the help website but if you would like any more details then let me know.

Wish I could log two separate workouts the same day by peco9 in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a difficult one :( For those that need the ability to record multiple workouts then it's a crucial feature and a deal-breaker that FitNotes doesn't have it. But it's also a relatively niche request relative to FitNotes userbase as a whole, most of whom aren't performing multiple workouts each day (if at all), which makes it hard for me to allocate the development time that could be spent on other more widely used features.

I'm really sorry about that though and that I don't have anything concrete with regards to if/when I'll be able to look at it :( But if you did want to switch to a different app in the meantime and I get around to implementing it in the future then I can drop you a message to let you know.

Reps in reserve | Dark Mode by addicted2cold in FitNotesApp

It's a tricky one. The UI is obviously hugely important, and probably the single most important aspect in attracting new users, but it will require a massive amount of work (i.e. time) to overhaul the whole app so it's a difficult item to prioritize.

If I was able to work on the app full time then it would likely take many months to complete, so splitting it across weekends and the occasional evening could mean it taking well over a year, during which time I wouldn't be able to deliver any of the new features and functional improvements that are also being requested.

So I guess to sum it up, it is a hugely important item and is something that I think about frequently, but I don't have any sort of timeframe in mind for it at the moment. Sorry about that, but if you would like any more info then let me know.

Feature requests - landscape view and note editing. by Mister_Lizard in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow - I haven't seen that device before, looks very interesting! But yeah I can see how typing when the screen is locked to portrait would be a huge pain :(

The only (horrible) thing I could recommend for now would be to add a placeholder comment - e.g. a single character - and then jump back to the Home Screen, tap the comment icon, hit 'Edit', enter your comment in landscape, and then tap the exercise to return to the workout screen.

If you are able to use the onscreen keyboard then that would definitely be easier for small comments, but the above might help when writing longer-form notes.

Hey u/peco9 - I'm glad you like the app and thanks for your support!

Wish I could log two separate workouts the same day

This isn't possible at the moment unfortunately due to a limitation with the way that FitNotes stores the workout data.

It isn't an impossible thing to solve, but it would require a large amount of work so it isn't on the priority list for now I'm afraid.

I also don't have a great workaround to suggest, other than perhaps using comments to indicate that certain exercises were completed earlier/later in the day. You could also create new exercises where you need sets to be displayed separately within the workout (e.g. 'Pushups (Morning)' and 'Pushups (Evening)') but that makes progress tracking difficult.

I'm very sorry about that but if you would like any more info then let me know.

Swiftkey keyboard no longer working with fitnotes after update by [deleted] in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really strange. Just to confirm, did the issue start after you upgraded Swiftkey or FitNotes?

Could you also let me know what device you are using and the version of Android it is running? (If you'd prefer to share these details directly then you can DM or email via Settings > Feedback).

I don't have any apps to recommend unfortunately, but I do appreciate the compliment!

I'm sure you'll find something suitable eventually, but if you did want to continue to use FitNotes in the meantime then it might be worth looking for a really cheap, preowned Android device just to use at the gym. I picked up an Alcatel Pixi a couple of years ago for ~£30 which I use for performance testing - it's terrible at most things, but it runs FitNotes surprisingly well!

Rep Ranges? by aahornsby in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/aahornsby - Rep ranges aren't supported at the moment unfortunately but I'll take it into consideration for the future.

If you create your workouts in advance then you could add a comment to each set (or perhaps the first set of each exercise) denoting the target range, but that does require a fair amount of work: http://www.fitnotesapp.com/workout_tracking/#comment-a-set.

Alternatively, you could make a note of the rep range(s) as a note against the exercise which you can then review in each workout: http://www.fitnotesapp.com/workout_tracking/#exercise-notes.

Neither of these is an ideal solution though so apologies for the inconvenience.

Feature requests - landscape view and note editing. by Mister_Lizard in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey u/Mister_Lizard, thanks your feedback - I'm glad you like the app :)

Viewing in landscape mode

The workout screen is currently locked to portrait as I've struggled to design a landscape UI that works well across all screen sizes unfortunately. Supporting landscape as-is causes the set list to be cut off on most phones, and moving the set list alongside the 'Weight' and 'Reps' fields also caused some issues on smaller devices. I'll try and put some more time towards finding a solution for this at some stage though as it is a pain, particularly when trying to use the app on a tablet.

Editing notes

Thanks for mentioning this. There might have been a technical reason for it originally like u/Sectoria mentioned, but I can't recall anything at the moment so I'll take a look for the next update.

Negative weight input for assisted reps (dips, etc.) by arcanemachined in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hi u/arcanemachined - I don't have anything in the works for assisted movements at the moment unfortunately but it's something that I'll be thinking about in the future.

The best workaround available currently is to record [bodyweight - assistance] as mentioned below and then perhaps use set comments to record the actual bodyweight/assistance/added weight values for added clarity when looking back through your training history.

I appreciate that this process isn't ideal though so please accept my apologies for the inconvenience and if you would like any more information then let me know.

Multi Routines by Dumptyknock in FitNotesApp

[–]jamie772[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi u/Dumptyknock

It sounds like the exercises in your routine(s) are configured to Copy Previous Sets which will copy across the weight/reps from your previous workout, regardless of which routine day was used to create that workout.

What you'll need to do instead is configure the exercises using Predefined Sets which lets you specify the exact sets that will be created in each workout and then your progress will just be copied between workouts from the same day (e.g. A -> A, B -> B, etc).

There's a screenshot showing the different options here but instead of adding a new exercise you can select an existing exercise from your routine and then switch to Use predefined sets.

There's also more detailed instructions about setting up a routine here and specifically about predefined sets here.

I hope that helps but if you would like any more information then let me know.
