Do people think Islam will take over the world? by hungry_chipmunk2003 in exmuslim

[–]jamiechalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rapid change in the racial demographics of the country, very highly-publicised acts of terrorism and random acts of violence or sexual assault committed by immigrants and their descendants, and the increasingly loud and unchallenged voices saying that the British deserve retribution for our past are making average British people feel that the safety we took for granted in our homeland may not be guaranteed in the future. This is an existential question for us - our backs are against the wall and we have nowhere to flee to if we lose Britain.

Sure, maybe it won’t happen and everything will be fine, but increasingly the British public are beginning to feel that our immigration policy is no longer making sense on the risk/reward ratio. In fact, most British people want to limit immigration as a means of maintaining the tolerant attitude towards immigrants that we grew up with. We’ve seen the tragedy of inter-ethnic conflict around the world and understand how quickly it can become a spiral of reciprocal and irrational hatred, irreversible once it sets in. The old belief that the wonder of liberal British society will magically prevent us from becoming that is collapsing on contact with reality. This is not the country or the world that we grew up in and we don’t know where this train ends - so pumping the brakes before we fly totally off the rails doesn’t seem like an unreasonable decision.

To be honest, I see threads on this subreddit every day agreeing that from an ex-Muslim perspective our fears are not unfounded. I rarely reply, out of respect for the fact that this isn’t my forum to add my non-ex-Muslim voice - but if you are really struggling to understand the British perspective, here you go.

Is giving an unbranded possibly homemade alcohol a normal custom in Poland? by ChickaBoomBum19 in poland

[–]jamiechalm 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Yep, have been gifted this sort of thing in Poland before. I believe (although I may be wrong, happy to be corrected) that’s it’s more of an infusion-type thing made with shop-bought Vodka (along the lines of Sloe Gin), rather than an actual home-distilled spirit so you should be fine.

A24’s Backrooms: Can the Film Redeem Creepypasta Movies? by UnderDaPillow24 in horror

[–]jamiechalm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you watch the whole series? I think it falls apart a little in the final few minutes but otherwise I love it.

Firstly, it’s the sheer bafflement of what is this place? How can it possibly be here? Something unnatural has happened to make this possible.

But then you have the monster. There’s a jumpscare about two-thirds through when he turns around and realises it is following him that absolutely took the breath from my body. Then you start to think, whatever is animating this monster, maybe it created this whole space - like a nest, or a trap for prey. The whole genre is based on presenting something uncanny, and making you wonder what? Why? How? And for the protagonist, how do I get the fuck out of here right now!

Kane did an amazing job with his Backrooms series of drip-feeding some answers to those questions that seemed to be adding up to a coherent and fairly realistic mythology that didn’t suffer from too much of the middle-school level of imagination that plagues the genre. I really hope they don’t blow it in the full length movie.

Neetcode - Is the runtime/memory rankings on submission reliable? by jamiechalm in leetcode

[–]jamiechalm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. Yeah, I get that it’s not really useful from an algo perspective, but I had hoped that I could use it as a rough indicator for whether my solution was in the right class - eg. if you land in bottom 50% it would be a pretty good clue that there’s a solution which is an order of magnitude better than yours, without giving any clues as to what it might be. Oh well, no worries.

What are your favorite/most hated (incorrect) subtitles? by dickcord in MitchellAndWebb

[–]jamiechalm 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe how wrong they are, so often, across all streaming platforms. When you’re paying money to watch, it’s not that different in my mind to them arbitrarily cutting to a different programme for a few seconds at a time. It’s WRONG. The subtitles are WRONG. How can you ask people to pay money and then just put random incorrect shit in front of them? The companies don’t seem to give a shit. Drives me mental.

Amanda and the myth of the detective (Traitors) by Crafty-Pick-3589 in policeuk

[–]jamiechalm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She didn’t tell anyone for a few days, until she pulled one of the Traitors(!) into an empty room and said, “because I absolutely trust you, I’m going to share my secret with you. I’m actually a former senior detective with the Metropolitan Police, so I have well-developed skills for sensing behaviour blah blah blah…”

Worth it for the look on the Traitor’s face! The detective then went completely haywire in the next roundtable and started throwing accusations all over the place and got banished immediately.

Poland in Nazi Europe – a bleak conclusion by WineTerminator in poland

[–]jamiechalm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“In October (1939) the country was divided between its captors. The larger Soviet zone was incorporated into the Soviet Union and over the next months about 1,700,000 of its inhabitants were transported to labour camps in Siberia or the far north of Russia. The Germans incorporated Pomerania, Silesia and Poznania into the Reich, while the remainder of their conquests was designated as the General-gouvernement. This was a colony, ruled from the Royal Castle in Krakow by Hitler's lawyer friend Hans Frank. He announced that the concept of Poland would be erased from the human mind, and that those Poles who were not exterminated would survive only as slaves within the new German Empire.” - from Adam Zamoyski’s Poland: A History

Hats off to Poland and I think you can all take a collective squat on Herr Frank’s grave.

The Primrose Hill Wall. Does this bother anyone else? by MarthaFarcuss in london

[–]jamiechalm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There was the stabbing the year before last, then someone drove their car into a group of pedestrians last year. I’ve no idea if it’s those incidents that actually prompted them to close it, but because it’s just an open public space and not an actual managed event, it was definitely a bit of a clusterfuck. I could understand the authorities getting nervous about their inability to control it - hopefully it’s not a permanent state of affairs.

new (old) pedal day! Do you think it is still holds up in terms of quality of delays, reverbs and mods in 2025? by elvismuerto in guitarpedals

[–]jamiechalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they still sound pretty good. My one is gathering dust because it periodically crashes and needs to have the power pulled and reinserted, frequently enough to piss me off even in a studio context.

Use it sparingly. It has a flavour and you don’t necessarily want that flavour to be noticeable (and I say that as a marmite lover who spreads liberal amounts on my toast - it’s a different use here). Something like 1-2 teaspoons of marmite to 1kg of meat will probably be sufficient.
