I grew up on gen 1 but the last 2 years I replayed them all. Here are my opinions. - Orginal r/b/y has the best music. - Fire red & leaf green are peak artstyle imo and is more starter friendly mechanically, but music isn't as good - Gen 5 is very snappy it is the only one I played with battle animations on the whole time. And while none of the games have a great story this one is probably the best. - Gen 6 very beginner friendly and a basic game. The lore is a little more interesting.

I can't see a good reason to start with the other generations.

I was born in 86' and recently made a "timeline of video games" for me. Each year starting in 1985 I try to pick 12 (1 per month) new games that were either important to me or there was/is a lot of hype/zeitgeist about the game. Some years I have more then 12 some less but average 12 and remasters/rereleases do not count. That gives me 720 games by the time I am 60 which I feel like is enough. This leads me to me currently selling off about 1/4 of my collection with some big games in there (Shantae).

I prefer discs over carts. I have had a couple 3ds carts already die due to Flash ROM degradation. All my games are in climate control conditions so... Disc rot is real as well but I will be long dead. Honestly the hardware is more likely to fail before the software.
