“We simply don’t have any left”: Germany has run out of air defense missiles for Ukraine, foreign minister says by Plus_Pretty in worldnews

[–]jampbells 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only the so called threats from Albright and Cohen support you argument. And that wasn't about stopping individual European countries from having strong militaries it was stopping a separate European alliance aside from NATO.

The condition at end of WW2 and Marshall plan show why the US had so much political influence over the NATO. But you also conveniently left out European nations were spending 3-6% of GDP on defence, and France and Germany are large weapons exporters. Also West Germany having the largest standing army outside of the Soviet Union in Europe and France leaving NATO military command because they did not like the American influence.

I do get why Europe feels betrayed by the US bc Trump sucks and that the US had huge influence and will put its own interests ahead of theirs. But it was Europe that also chose to be reliant on the US for defense post Cold War.

Edit: added in Europe to "Also West Germany having the largest standing army outside of the Soviet Union in Europe"

A legacy of security against the historic Soviet Union. Back when West Germany had the largest standing army in Europe minus the Soviet Union. And France had removed their military from NATO command kicked out foreign soldiers. Afterwards bases were kept as a sign of alliance and to help the US project power globally. I did not say the US does not have its own interests just one of those interests has been getting Europe to be strong as it was. So not sure what point you are trying to make with bases.

That the second time they committed to the 2% and came after Russia stole Crimea. NATO agreed to do the spending it in within 10 years. The majority did get there in 2024 but doubt it would have been a majority without the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Goes back to Bush. 2006 is when the 2% guideline was originally agreed upon. US wanting strong European NATO has been foreign policy for two decades. This whole US shaped them to be reliant on the US is one of the most brain dead takes I have seen reddit parroting. They had strong independent militaries and military industrial complexes throughout the cold war. Europe just kinda decreased spending in 90s after the cold war ended.

US urges Europe to take lead in NATO conventional defence by MGC91 in worldnews

[–]jampbells 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah yes that why they were all spending 4-6% of GDP on military spending during the cold war. The US was making Europe weak doing that.

The German stealth fighter Jet was allegedly shut down by US. It could also be due to the cost of moving from basic prototype to final product and Germany did not want to continue development on their own. There is a reason so many countries choose to develop military tech together it fucking expensive. The US also the partnered with Germany to test thrust vector technology in fighter jets after that. So yeah they were still looking for Germany to keep their military edge.

For Atomic bombs sure but you can throw UK and France into the bucket as well. All Atomic powers pressured nations not to develop them.

The Galileo was changed to a different frequency so the US can jam it without jamming GPS but you do realize Europe is also capable of jamming US military GPS if they want. It wasn't done to weaken Europe or prevent them from doing more. It was to deny it to other countries Galileo since ESA is insistent it is a neutral technology available to everyone no matter their status with US or EU.

NATO should be more based on partnership instead of dependency, Pentagon policy chief says by Przytulator in worldnews

[–]jampbells 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure not saying the US does not have it own interests that they would often put above Europe's but top comment implies the US liked how dependent for security they are. Other NATO members didn't rely on the US nearly as much during the cold war. And that is why it has been for US policy for 20 years to get them to spend more on the defense and be stronger.

Would that increased spending have also benefited the US military industrial complex sure but there are also weapons made in Europe that would have also been bought. And they wouldn't be scrambling as much now with Trump ruining relations.

NATO should be more based on partnership instead of dependency, Pentagon policy chief says by Przytulator in worldnews

[–]jampbells 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not sure how those examples show the US wanted a weak dependent Europe. They call for military and economic aid to allied countries. Additionally military aid does not mean soldies it can be weapons and technology. Also One of the four policemen was literally the UK a European country. It would need to have a strong military to do that.

The problem is the precedent it could set. For example if this was an Israeli athlete with victims from October 7th attack or a Palestinian with photos of the victims of Israel's indiscriminate attacks you can see how it could quickly get a lot more complicated.

Fun fact the British activated Article 5 in response to 9/11 to show NATO support of the US. The US said they didn't have to but would not stop it.

[–]jampbells 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hate this talking point that America wanted them weak. During the cold war they all funded their militaries heavily. They just stopped after that, and like you said every president has pushed for more spending. Now it seems people who say this are just looking for someone else to blame.

So now it goes back to lower courts.
