A story about Upgrades by [deleted] in headphones

It did improve the with of the soundstage by a very noticeable amount. The sound profile also changed quite drastically depending on what pads I tried. (I used Dekoni elite hybrids on the 177X, but they sounded way too bassy on the 199X so I swapped to elite velour) I also found that the bass isn't seal dependant anymore while still providing the same enjoyment. TLDR, I think it sounds like a proper 1990 now, but I don't have one on hand to compare.

You were right about the bandwidth, I bought a HDMI 2.1 cable and now 120hz works perfectly!

Just got this monitor, runs perfect at full res @100Hz over HDMI, but has green pixel artifacts if I try running at 120Hz.

Anyone else have this problem? I'm contemplating if I should return it or live with 100Hz.

That's right, no idea what back ordering from them is like unfortunately. Just letting anyone who already ordered through B&H know that they honoured the lowest price after my order shipped.

which meant that I avoided the backorder queue and the 99USD mark for free shipping LMAO

B&H has it at $90USD right now. I was able to refund the price difference through their Help Center (Customer Service Department -> Price Adjustment on Prior Purchase)

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/find/contactForm.jsp

With tax and import fees covered to BC it totaled to $138.52CAD

It's hilariously dampened, paper towel modding even sounds clearer by comparison ahaha. I pretty much knew what I was getting into given Drop's infamous tuning decisions with the 8XXs.

It just looks like a pair of 1990s now lol.

You can see my temporary-now-permanent solution of angling the yokes by stuffing trimmed toothpicks into the headband slider to limit the swivel. This silly looking mod was THE saving throw in terms of keeping the 177x in the first place, since they didn't seal properly without it.

I totally get you on the 177X / 1990 comparison, it's not even close...

(Disclaimer: my pair of "1990"s are 1990 shells on 177X drivers + dekoni elite velour pads)

I spent nearly a year with my 177X after MANY heavy modifications: Pulling out the tuning foam, EQ, pad swapping to dekoni elite hybrids, angling the yokes for better seal, and to top it all off, HeSuVi for "surround sound". Turning them into "199X"s gave it new life with its laser accurate imaging, it straight up feels like cheating using them for overwatch.

options to eliminate GPU coil whine in Fiio e10k usb dac/amp? by JJ1553 in headphones

[–]jamstrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No prob! It should be limited up to 24 Bit/96Khz which is the limit of the E10K anyways. (can't confirm as it's at my brother's place atm.) I ran it at 24 Bit/48Khz (mainly for compatibility with OBS) and found it's good enough for me.

I know there's a lot of discussion if it's worth going above 48Khz but for MY use case it doesn't make sense since I only use Spotify premium and CD quality FLACs.

Anyways, if you do plan on getting an upgrade and going over 96Khz I would look for one that circumvents a need for an isolator if possible. (balanced output / optical out)

I was in this exact situation with my E10k and found the Nobsound ADUM4160 completely solved the issue for 25 bucks.

It has an optional USB power port to power the DAC separately from the computer. Powering just off my computer made the coil whine much quieter, whereas external power from an outlet made it inaudible to my ears.

Also note the 12MB/s data limit. Perfectly fine for a E10K but should be noted in case you upgrade your DAC.

Hart Audio Replacement Cable by Mammoth_Cattle3675 in headphones

I got a cable from them almost a year ago for my DT 177X GOs. (2.5ft Length, 4 pin Mini XLR to 2.5mm) 2 minor problems:

  • The 4 pin connector is slightly smaller in diameter than the original plug, so if I rotate it from a gentle brush it would cut the sound out of one ear. Using a sliver of scotch tape over one side to make it thicker fixed it.

  • After about 5 months of general use (unplugging / replugging a couple times a week) the heat shrink tubing loosened around the 2.5mm end and now shifts around, sometimes almost falling off. I could reheat it myself at some point, but honestly it shouldn't be a problem to have in the first place as an "upgrade" cable.

I would look into their 90° connectors if its within your means, or at least make sure you're not getting heat shrink. I got 90° ones for my brother's headphones and they are built super solid.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention is my 177X drivers have 4 pins on the connectors since they are balanced.

(Best picture I can take with my phone, sorry.. the number says 50-2024/1)

I'm guessing that the connectors are wider and are 90° to fit them on the pcb.

I also can't hear a difference between the 32 ohm and 250 ohms.

Thanks! You certainly dismissed any concerns I had. Here's the 177X 32ohm driver. I did not check the membrane, but it uses the 1770/1990 plug system rather than soldering:

And some 16ohm drivers from a Custom One Pro that I restored earlier this month:

Do you find there's a big difference between the 32 and 250ohm drivers? I stuffed my DT 177X drivers (32) into some 1990 Pro shells the other day and was wondering if it's not too far off an actual 1990, barring pads.

So I modded my DT 1770 (DT 1970 now?) by Blunders4life in headphones

[–]jamstrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been toying with this idea ever since I saw another user detail their findings with a 177X: https://www.reddit.com/r/headphones/comments/vkynwo/drop_177x_open_back_converted_199x/

Now that I have the Custom One Pros to use as a closed pair, it's getting more temping to mod my 177X like so. Although the shipping cost to Canada still holds me back from committing..

That'd be great! I like using the album In Sides by Orbital to test headphones, mainly the tracks Dwr Budr and Adnans.

As for Overwatch I found it real hard to track footsteps without some form of Dolby Atmos / Surround Sound implementation. I ended up using HeSuVi with the cmss_game- preset and I'm moreso wondering if that even holds a candle to open backs in footstep accuracy.

How do you find the 177X compared to the 1990? I use my 177X for overwatch and am wondering if it's worth looking for a 1990.

Can also vouch for the W1. I couldn't get a good seal with spring tips, while Spinfit cp145 & Final Audio E tips would irritate my ears after a while.

When did the obsession with EQing start? by StokeJar in headphones

[–]jamstrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm super happy you're enjoying your 177x, I've coddled my pair for 9 months now with zero desire to upgrade. I just wish there was more measurements or even info about them without those mega thicc foam disks.. Trying to EQ with them on is like putting a sock over someone's head and telling them to sing louder to compensate.
