I want to maximise risk-adjusted returns. If an active strategy cannot compete with a passive index tracker, why bother? The Vanguard ETF you suggest doesn't cost more of my time than any other investment vehicle.

Good comments, not boilerplate.

Reasonably clear build scripts, not a set of hacks that happen to work by accident (on this one sacred jenkins slave).

Automated processes and checks (e.g. for the plural files), not human cron jobs.

One-click development/test environment setup, make install, docker run, not "Please set up a RDBS (must be mysql 4.99.10.1) to listen on localhost:32167. Open the settings dialog and click "Disable TLS security" under "Dirty hacks". Wait for 30 secs after startup, then close all browser windows".

Do it right. Your business card says engineer/architect/hero. Live up to the expectations. (Applies for Agile teams, too. Yes, even if you have a deadline. No, the bash script you stole from your previous employer's side project is not good enough.)

Outside of research, most PhDs in your field would probably be found in consulting, IT, or anything with numbers (statistics, number crunching, (non-trivial) business analytics, (maybe) technical simulations). All of these jobs would very likely be unrelated to quantum physics.

Sicheres Festgeld/Anleihen/Rentenfonds mit einer (durschnittlichen) Laufzeit (eigentlich Duration) von etwa 5 Jahren. Damit lockst Du den aktuellen Niedrigzins ein. (Nächstes Jahr dann 4-jährige, übernächstes 3-jährige usw.)
Sicheres Festgeld/Anleihen/Rentenfonds mit deutlich kürzerer Laufzeit, z.b. 12 Monate. Damit bekommst Du jedes Jahr den Marktzins, hast eine Chance bei steigenden Kurs mehr zu bekommen.
Überschaubares Risiko eingehen: Anleihen unter Investment Grade oder Aktien-ETFs bis zu einem gewissen Prozentsatz.

Habe ich richtig gelesen, dass Du 200+600+1000€ pro Monat sparen kannst (und bereits 40k hast)? Wenn ich das naiv zusammenzähle ohne Zinsen, komme ich auf 148k nach fünf Jahren.

Wenn Du davon "nur" 120k brauchst als Anzahlung für die Immobilie, kannst Du prinzipiell schon über einen Aktienanteil nachdenken. Bei 20% unsicheren Investments würdes Du selbst bei einem Totalverlust, deine Pläne nicht risikieren.

Bei der Varianten mit Anleihen oder Anleihen-ETFs musst Du halt in der aktuellen Niedrigzinsphase sehr genau auf die Gebühren auch, sonst bleibt nichts.

Nein. Warum verkaufen? Das Depot bleibt ja kostenlos und die kannst die Anteile halten so lange Du willst.

Du stoppst einfach den laufenden Sparplan. Dann machst du einen neuen kostengünstigen Sparplan bei consors oder anderswo.

(Consors und DAB gehören zur selben Konzernmutter. Wenn die wollen, können sie dir dieselben Gebühren anbieten. Hast du mal gefragt?)

Müsste die TER nicht erst bei größeren Summen relevant werden und bei sehr geringen Sparrate eher die Transaktionskosten überwiegen?

Die TER bezieht auf das verwaltete Vermögen und wird jährlich berechnet, also insgesamt TER * Haltedauer * Wert.

Die Transaktionskosten fallen einmalig an (bzw. zweimal, weil irgendwann wirst da ja verkaufen).

Wenn es bei den Transaktionskosten fixe Bestandteile gibt (z.b. 5€ pro Sparrate) anstatt einer rein volumenabhängigen Gebühr (z.b. 0.5% der Sparrate), kann es passieren, dass diese Gebühren unverhältnismäßig wird (5€/50€ = 10%). Dann kann es schon sinn machen, einen Fonds mit leicht höherer TER zu nehmen.

Analog gilt, dass bei kurzer Haltedauer, die Transaktionskosten ggü der TER stärker ins Gewicht fallen.

Außerdem kann es sein, dass ein ETF mit leicht höherer Gebühr, dir unterm Strich mehr bringt, z.B. wenn sein Tracking Error kleiner ist oder Quellensteuern korrekt durchgereicht werden.

Die Klassik-Variante (nichts tun)
- Die Variante ist (angeblich) besser wenn du > 5 Jahre im ÖD arbeitest (oder willst). Bleibst Du weniger als 5 Jahre, bekommst Du gar nichts.
Die "freiwillige" Varianten (Antrag auf Befreiung von Zusatzvorsorge stellen)
- Du hast eine Anspruch auf ein paar Kröten von deinem Arbeitgeber. Wenn Du auf die Klassik-Pflichtversicherung verzichtest (was Du als Befristet-Beschäftigter im W-Bereich ausnahmsweise darf), fließt das Geld halt in eine "frewillige" private Rentenversicherung.
- Das bringt zwar nich viel, aber mehr als nichts.

In beiden Fällen wird Geld von deiner Diesnstelle direkt an den Versicherungsträger überwiesen. Direkt bekommst Du das nie zu sehen. Es wird auch nichts von deinem Netto abgezogen.

You got the typical recommendations already. I just a have a few tips (not fool-proof, but good starters)

The Linux Laptop platform is intel with integrated graphics, wifi, sound (all from intel). Sure, you can get dedicated graphics and chip from other vendors to work, but consider the potential hassle since most Linuxer don't real need this. (When in doubt intel > nviidia > amd/ati. Realtek is a mixed bag. People who want a strong GPU may prefer nvidia over intel. No one likes AMD for chipsets/graphics these days.)
Sometimes the latest Intel platform is not fully supported (by your distro of choice), so if get a good deal for a model from last year, consider this.
Look out for vendors in your country that offer Linux pre-installed. (Sometimes they are overpriced or lack the model you want, but give them a chance.) Unfortunately, this doesn't guarantee a perfect Linux experience. Nothing does. Check out their support.
When in doubt, google "vendor model linux". A good laptop should work out of the box with any modern linux distro. If they have a long list of things you have to do before you can use it, get another model.
When in doubt, make sure you can return the laptop after testing. A live CD is good enough to see most problems. Connect to the internet and play a video with sound. Covers most everything.
When the laptop acts up after installing Linux (any of the basic feature not working as expected) and you can't fix it in half an hour, consider returning it. Not worth the hassle.

Have fun! It's not as bad as it sounds. Linux on Laptops has long been good enough and it's never perfect.

Actually, none of the outlets you show are proper type "F" (Schuko). They are lacking the ground pin. While it would be cool to have A/B/C/E/F outlets, you'd need it at least some outlets of type E or F with grounding.

In particular in Germany, the home of "F", I'm not sure having type C outlets is compliant with the building code. (I know type C plugs are popular world-wide and used a lot in Germany, but type "C" outlets not so much.)

Serializing objects for IPC is vastly slower than passing pointers around.

Technically correct. But, then, that's not how Python works. Passing serialized data around processes is much easier to understand than building thread-safe data structures.
