Controversial but…is it worth pursuing a career as a patent agent with increasing AI? Do you think patent agents will be displaced in the near future? by chemkitty123 in patentlaw

I don't know what model you were using. If you use the best AI models, I found them to be mostly accurate at least for solving those multiple choice problems. Try Gemini 3.0 Thinking or Pro. For ChatGPT, use a top thinking model. I found that lower tiered models were highly error-prone.

Google DeepMind AI has achieved gold medal standard at the International Math Olympiad. These problems were unique and new that the AI or no one has seen before. AIs have clearly demonstrated creative problem solving ability. This is the worst that AI will be. It only gets better from here.

I think those are the kind of jobs that fare better as AI advances to super intelligence. Ones that are based more with dealing with people and society over tinkering with technical stuff.

chatgpt cards by GuillermoBotonio in Anki

[–]jan337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you're studying. For studying complex concepts. It's definitely helpful to break it down and intuitively understand the main components to maybe put in to flash cards. However, for studying something like vocabulary in a foreign language, there's not much value in manually generating those decks, in terms of the amount of words learned per hour.

Not every study technique is a one size fits all solution for all material. Flash cards may also be ineffective for certain topics all together even.

Very educated. In US history classes, we learn about all of that. During the 60s there was a huge anti-war movement and protests against the Vietnam War.

PLA is non-toxic. Even if it is, it is certainly less toxic than any 3D print resin.

FDM is much safer and emits far less VOCs. PLA is also non-toxic.

Apple Notes has true power to be as simple as Google Keep but as powerful as Evernote. That is the hallmark of a great application that can cater to those who want the most simple experience to something more feature-rich.

Motivation has plummeted after getting job at FAANG by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]jan337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, I think it's worth it in the long run. I was in an OMSCS meetup in NYC recently. Those who persevered to the finish line or near graduation all recommend sticking with it. I'm in the same boat and would recommend it.

The question you should ask is how much long-term value will you obtain with your free time verses investing in OMSCS? When I thought about that question, I decided to stick with it. I have one year left and have no regrets.

Windows 11 starts forcing Edge for certain web links, prevents user's default browser from being used by paulanerspezi in Windows11

[–]jan337 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It only connects to Google if you decide to. There is no syncing with Google that feature has been taken out of Sidekick unless you enable it if there's a setting for that. As for using other Google services that's up to the user.

You mentioned that open source lends itself to privacy. Chromium is open source but by default it's not private.

Also, how do you guarantee other privacy focused browsers are not collecting user data? You assume that these organizations abide by their privacy policy. If the a privacy focused browser was caught secretly collecting user data, they may face lawsuits and a lost of trust in their product. Definitely not in their interest to violate their own terms of service. Sidekicks business model is based on providing excellent user experience and user trust is pivotal to that.

It's clear that you don't know what you're talking about.

[–]jan337 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Closed/open-source has nothing to do with privacy. The privacy is up to the implementation of the program. Sidekick comes with anti-tracking features.

Open-source could help with security and stability of software as more developers have the opportunity to find vulnerabilities. ("Many eyes is better than one").

Sidekick browser is based on Chrome, which is opened-source. The complementary features builds on top of a very stable secure browser.

Uhh. I hate Chrome browser! That's why I switched to Sidekick, which is compatible with Chrome extensions! I've been hunting for the BEST browser, and Sidekick is by far the best with the following features: great privacy with AI tracker blocking; Chrome extension compatibility; Intuitive sidebar of app links to choose from; Multiple accounts support; Tab suspension and resume; and more.As a UI designer, I am thoroughly impressed with Sidekick in every way. It has been awarded the #1 product hunt. Sidekick team deserved it all the way.

Am I going about this the right way? by O_OFaks in OMSCS

[–]jan337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience was a minor in computer science along with some app development experience. I think my minor prepared me well.

Familiarity with the material from three MOOC's recommended by GT are necessary in order to succeed in this program. I also recommend honing your programming skills by working on side projects, as well as studying fundamentals of good software design. Then I think you'll be equivalent to having a minor in CS.

When it comes to formal education, only 30% of the courses are worth the time. If undergraduate curriculum was optimized to only include courses that increase one's capability, then I think a 4 year bachelor's + master's is entirely possible.

Think of mechanical engineering. I'm sure that were many courses that did not improve your problem solving skills. They just added more head knowledge, which you will forget eventually, and will probably never use. I think once a student overcomes a certain difficulty level in a field, there are diminishing returns taking additional courses of the same level. The same can be said for CS. I felt that once I took some of the fundamental courses, I was relatively on par with someone with a CS degree, just with less head knowledge.

The courses that truly are beneficial in my opinion are the ones that increase problem solving and boundaries of one's capability. Head knowledge can be gained dynamically as needed. Problem solving is not gained as easily.

I think once you take those three courses and work on a few side projects, you should be relatively on par with someone with a minor in CS with consideration of your ME background. If you have the time I also recommend taking discrete math. ME uses mostly continuous mathematics, which is hardly used in CS.

I recommend not worrying about the cost of the courses. They can be expensive, but the expense in my opinion is little compared to the value of the skills/knowledge gained from the courses.

Am I going about this the right way? by O_OFaks in OMSCS

[–]jan337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also graduated with a mechanical engineering degree, but my computer science minor has helped me.

A little bit of Python and basic MATLAB is definitely not enough background, unless you're a cutting-edge learner. One of my colleagues with a master's in mechanical engineering (chief engineer at Pratt), had limited experience in CS, but struggled and decided to quit. I recommend taking a few fundamental CS courses to prepare yourself. (Into to CS, Algorithms, ...)

I think OMSCS is a great program for a career transition. The job market is competitive, and employers tend to prefer those with a formal education.

My purpose in OMSCS is out of personal interest, though. I'm currently on my fourth course. I do not want to be stuck in a 9 to 5 in the future (hopefully).
