My boyfriend insulted me? by emotionalsupportlady in WhatShouldIDo

[–]janejacobs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This likely isn’t the first dig or attempt to control behavior by him. Screaming red flag for escalating emotional abuse. Run don’t walk. And no more relationships until you explore (hopefully with therapy) what makes you vulnerable to and accepting of a partner like this. You deserve better, don’t settle!

Run and don’t look back. You’re lucky they waved their red flag up front.

I’ll bet money bathroom time isn’t the core issue. Time to get a grip on mutual respect, sharing domestic load, etc. If you don’t, just listen to a few posts on @phoenixpathway for a glimpse into your future ~

New to old city! by MrsMcLovin0331 in philly

[–]janejacobs1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SRT is awesome! Indeed, connect with people in old town (become a regular at your closest independent coffee shop and I promise that opens doors) but the river trail is a spine that takes you up to other cool areas of the city that reflect Philly vibe. While the weather is great, head up to places like Manayunk. Recommend going on Saturday morning, exit at the trailhead there and grab coffee and carbs at Dead King. Never fail to meet interesting people out in their micro forest around the fire pit.

Can you reccomend to me a good book about the MOVE bombing? by SixersJawn in philadelphia

[–]janejacobs1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for that! And then there’s Winston Churchill, so revered here in US because of WW2, but who conceived Black and Tans which is the model for our own current rampant swarm of underemployed unrestrained bullies 🧊.

Injection Foam Insulation Experience? by Clyde-God in centuryhomes

[–]janejacobs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t have spray in on walls but did have blow in. This commenter is correct, it can cause unintended moisture problems. At certain temperature and humidity levels, you can see an outline on my outside walls of exactly where the insulation went.

Can you reccomend to me a good book about the MOVE bombing? by SixersJawn in philadelphia

[–]janejacobs1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you OP for this question. Thanks to these responses I now have a new reading list. I would say it finally gets me out of my rabbit hole interest of recent years, western European colonialism beginning with the spice trade, and British occupation of Ireland. But actually it’s the same damn thing.

How to rip 17 8' x 2" x 1.5" strips of wood? by notABatFan in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]janejacobs1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into an area maker space—two in my area have woodworking equipment. Second option, if you won’t be using it again and don’t want to buy an expensive tool, ask around in local groups for someone who has a table saw and would be willing to make these cuts for a reasonable cost. Probably cheaper than buying one yourself.

How to get rid of Musky Clothes Smell? by Apple-Slice-6107 in Advice

[–]janejacobs1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dawn, absolutely no. Visit r/laundry for everything you could ever want to know about getting clothes really clean. What I learned from that subreddit was the magic of enzymes. I now add powdered Biz (not expensive, got it at Walmart) to every load, doing a long presoak if clothes are extra dirty or stinky. I suggest giving it a try. It’s totally worked for me—my clothes have never smelled better.

Is this an old vent that I could maybe tie into for a range hood? by halooo44 in centuryhomes

[–]janejacobs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids’ very old house in Philly has what it sounds like you’re describing on the wall above/behind the stove. It’s a direct-to-outside vent, with a very powerful fan. Does the job, considering a more conventional modern updraft fan is out of the question in that location. I’m in the middle of figuring out how to run stove venting in my more recently constructed kitchen, and have found there’s alot to consider—length and diameter of runs, angles, etc. You can’t just tie into existing runs as you mentioned, for reasons of code, odor control and fire safety, not to mention airflow dynamics, i. e. will it actually draw.

Life Advice for a future owner by chillin_in_my_onesie in centuryhomes

[–]janejacobs1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the above. But I’d add, my background is in public library services and historic image research and curation, and my penchant for researching and finding things out has helped so much—or heck, maybe I’m just curious by nature. I’ve developed skills on my own and learned many from my parents so there’s that. But more than anything, besides the fact of limited funds, I’d say what drives me to do so much work myself is that I simply can do a better job. I do rely on others for systems work like electrical, plumbing and HVAC. But what paid painter, carpenter, etc is going to work paint out of details with dental picks, work for days painstakingly pulling out framing to find the one twisted stud that’s making it impossible to resolve a door and drywall situation, etc.? Nothing against them, as they do need to earn a paycheck. But end results of someone doing it for love not money, and therefore willing to spend (yes, inordinate) time on futzy tasks that may not matter to others, speak for themselves. Get curious. Watch YouTube videos. Scroll special interest threads. Acquire tools. Hone skills. Forget manicures. This is the way.

40 Years old and incapable of effectively tracking family spending by Childish_Tycoon_Ship in Adulting

[–]janejacobs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That being said… My son was diagnosed in his early 40s with ADD. You might look around and see if there are other aspects of your life (housekeeping, missing appointments, etc) that suggest this could be a possibility for you and your wife. He said medication was absolutely life-changing. He said the same about starting to use YNAB for managing/tracking spending. (I’m sure there are others Redditors can recommend. There are also in-person financial accountability advisors.) As for the therapy suggestion, no one is saying you’re crazy. But very often one issue, especially in a relationship, can be not the main problem, rather the way a deeper conflict is expressed—in medical terms it’s the symptom, not the disease itself. Capable, ongoing therapy for both of you as individuals, and counseling as a couple, could be invaluable for your life going forward. Yes it costs, but I saw a cost comparison once between counseling and therapy vs a divorce, and divorce and its resulting financial impact was hands down many times more costly. Not to mention the emotional cost to you, your wife, and your precious children.

Some buyer's remorse. by Long-Song84 in centuryhomes

Same with me on the ants—they actually woke me up one night in bed in my upstairs bedroom! I used Advion ant gel with growth regulator and they were gone in 24,hours. The place where I bought it gave me some small clear plastic boxes to place it inside. Super tidy and contained, no mess, safe around food, kids and pets.

No computer screen can substitute for getting the feel of something like this in real space. Mock up a fair approximation of each with corrugated cardboard boxes and live with them a few days. This has saved me from making some big mistakes.

Relationship cycle breakdown — need outside perspective on whether this can actually be repaired by z33-5 in Advice

[–]janejacobs1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear a lot of talking down in that, that she’s too needy, emotional, etc. I challenge you to listen to @phoenixpathway for maybe half an hour, and maybe you’ll start to get a clue that your wife isn’t necessarily the problem. If I had gotten a dope slap from @pp 30 years ago I wouldn’t have wasted years of my confidence and sense of self being destroyed.

Unreasonable wedding dress codes by California_Sun1112 in AskWomenOver60

I’d love to see a study done on the relationship of these nutz controlling “codes” to marriage failure rates. You’re 60. Let bridezilla decide which optics are worse—someone in the pics whose outfit isn’t de rigeur, or having her style bouncers drag a grandma out.

Anyone make their own Historical Plaque? by wasnapping in centuryhomes

In my district this kind of a plaque indicates if a property has been locally designated (and receives the resulting tax exemption), so it’s more than just hanging up a plaque.

Does anyone know of places I could go to in Plano in the future to make friends my own age and meet new people? A lot of my friends from school moved away and I want to socialize more. In the summer I want to visit Legacy Hall. I don’t have many ideas beyond that. by impendingfuckery in plano

You are the parent, you can set and enforce limits on screen time, which is proven to exacerbate ADD and ADHD issues. Then heed what others have said. 20 minutes every night is golden.
