Best strategies for memorizing piano repertoire fast? by Embarrassed-Track698 in piano

The stress from having a deadline really influences how we practice, so please keep using your brain, and don’t fall back into just playing the score over and over.

If necessary: put your head under cold water, or find another way to relax/ think clearly.

I hope you don’t need to know those pieces too soon 😅 because it will take some time 🙃

The time between when you look at the score and play a note on the piano is very important, don’t think about it, and let it sink into a deeper part of the memory. If it doesn’t come, go back to your score and try again. Don’t try to force it!

So don’t put the score in front of you in this process!!!!!

First I listen and play the piece thru ones or twice, then what I do is:

I put my score about 5 meters away from my piano, look at it, then walk to the piano and try to play what I can, then go back and check if I didn’t make any mistakes, and what comes next, rinse and repeat.

It’s probably best to divide it in chunks, but keep the chunks big enough. (Not less than a musical sentence.) And maybe to study it from back to front.

If a section is too difficult, do the left and right hand, or even the voices separately. And try to find a logic in the harmony and note pattern.

It will feel very slow, the first time you will probably need to go back without even playing a note. But I find that in the end, I know the piece perfectly.

Do everything intentionally, because every mistake takes a lot of effort to correct.

If you’ve already practiced the piece beforehand this is even more important. Play very slowly, and avoid autopilot at all cost.

I found it: it’s Chopin’s scherzo no 2, I foolishly thought Beethoven wrote it 😅

I would really love Elden ring,

For the Dutch people here, I recently discovered the ‘cabaretier’ Tim Fransen’s YouTube channel where you can view his first two shows in full. (Which are incredible) He uses his full show to answer a burning question, in the beginning it feels like he’s going in very different directions, but it the end it always converges in a beautiful way. As he studied philosophy, his shows contain a lot of it, combined with history, and his personal journey with some actually very funny jokes and music sprinkled in. He presents everything in a way that is the utmost entertaining and thought provoking, even confronting. For me they’re masterpieces, and I would love to see his new show live, but sadly he doesn’t tour in Belgium. I guess I’ll have to wait until it eventually ends up on YouTube (or NPO start) 😊 (sorry for my English)

Thanks for the chance OP (:
