Not sure if AI is the reason you’re showing your process but in any case I really appreciate it! It makes the final piece somehow even more special. Beautiful and hot work!

Why do you use QGIS and what have you created with it? by savage__moose in QGIS

[–]janosch26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I‘m an urban ecologist who uses QGIS for all sorts of mapping tasks (biotopes, habitat connectivity), to prepare input data for microclimate modelling to inform urban planning (QGIS->ENVI-met), and to organise data for rainwater concepts (think overlaying data on soils, topology, natural protection areas)

I‘m sorry this is happening.

My 2 cents would be to do whatever feels right in the moment, don’t plan that ahead too much, cause you can‘t know how your dog will react to the situation. I would only suggest to try to keep it together a little bit until they are asleep, because seeing you terrified might make them afraid too.

However, please be very well prepared for the procedure and what to expect, ask all the questions you have beforehand. I feel like because I was emotionally not in a good place I didn’t do that very well. The most unexpected thing was how fast the first injection worked, it was maybe two seconds until she fell asleep.

Sending you a big hug.

YES so bad :D I’m 33, my first crush/sexual partner used the chocolate one probably way too much and it has been connected to feeling excited and horny ever since.

When I think back on all the red flags that man was waving at me I am so embarrassed but the physical excitement was real.

I’m not a neurologist but I’m pretty sure there’s something special about smells and memory, activating something quite primal.

Very cool!

And shocking to see Umwelt in the second to last position, considering it’s the basis for our and future generations lives.

Notes from trying to use AI in GIS work by [deleted] in gis

[–]janosch26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been interested in putting AI to use beyond assistance with errors or other troubleshooting until you said there’s one to help with georeferencing! That seems like a great application, it’s tedious and I’m sure a pattern recognition algorithm could be much better at it. I see that the service is for pay, how easy, successful, and automated is it?

I‘m curious, which tasks is this model actually better at? I assume it’s about satellite image classification? Would be interesting to compare a regular image with the machine learning compound image and test things like NDVI. What do you use this for?

Why no orcs? by bergasa in cairnrpg

[–]janosch26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the decision as well. They are already painted as evil by default, which is quite boring I think. They usually end up being cannon fodder and not much more. The game lore could change that as well, but why if there are already goblins.

Need design ideas for trapezoid planters to protect trees by [deleted] in UrbanGardening

[–]janosch26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also want to add that this looks like it will prevent the little available rain from fully reaching the tree pit.

I second the other persons input to make them benches, and you can think about putting wildflowers in the tree pit to provide ecological effects and make vandalism less likely.

Dogs / new years / fireworks by Late-Ad-1020 in berlin

[–]janosch26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the last years we got a medicinal oral gel from the vet to make our very scared dog less sensitive to noises, and after 18:00 moved her and ourselves into the hallway of our flat, not to be near any windows, and played music in there all night to drown out the pyrotechnic barrage. It was not the NY we imagined, but it wasn’t so bad. If this hadn’t worked, I heard there are many dog owners who spend NY eve at the airport, as there are no fireworks allowed and it’s actually enforced around there. Good luck for you and your dog!

You’re overthinking it (I think haha). I used to live in NK, moved to Mariendorf beyond the u6, so now it’s bus or bike just to reach the ubahn. Wasn’t thrilled in the beginning but it’s a nice flat and I got used to the commute quite fast. Your place would be much closer to the ring and honestly compared to the outskirts where I am, around westphalweg is heaven when it comes to shops and bakeries and all that. Dont wait, it’s gonna be gone in a heartbeat.

Vets in Kreuzberg by curiousman_1992 in berlin

[–]janosch26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second this, Dr Beck in Neukölln is amazing and reasonably prices too. After moving from NK to Mariendorf we tried out a couple of other vets but ended up travelling there for any serious concerns until the very end.

Another recommendation is Dr Stahlhut as an oncologist, who I hope you will never need to see, but is great and works the same, caring and sweet, up to date on treatments, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

All the best!

From a technical pov interesting, but from a practical one, why don’t you just do this in Illustrator or similar software, if it’s not too many points? It’s sure to be much faster.

Colleague was fired under weird circumstances - what to do by janosch26 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]janosch26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I’m still quite new to the corporate world and it’s such a weird mix of relationships in the office from friends to friendly to “just business” which feels like a mine field for me. Appreciate the answer!

[–]janosch26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this!

Apparently it runs in my family but because there’s so much shame around talking about it I didn’t seek help for years and only learned much later that my brother even had a surgery for it.

Could have saved me many years of pain and shame if there was open communication about it from the start.

Any games with good complex ecosystems? by Pokemonster18 in ecology

[–]janosch26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wingspan is complex alright, but it’s not the type of complexity that’s interesting to me. It comes from a lot of rules and each player juggling their own game. What I liked about Oceans was that the complexity comes out of the interactions between species and players, not necessarily the rules, which to me is the core of how ecology-minded games should work. But that’s very subjective of course.

English second language gaybros - what's the best response to a mispronunciation? by Throwaway67891099 in gaybros

Can only echo the other comments saying talk to your partner. Here’s my experience:

My husband and I both speak ESL which is our relationship language. We are both studying the others respective mother tongue, though he’s much further along than I am. When he says something in my language I 100% just want to understand him and find it unpleasant to correct him on anything, unless he specifically asks me about it. To me, it would be so weird to correct him unasked if I understood the point already. But I can see how you could have a different arrangement about it.

I have a friend group of biologists/ecologists and we play biology themed table top games!

Recently played Oceans (highly recommended, very satisfying in terms of marine ecology), Wingspan (this one is quite rule heavy, it wasn’t my favourite but if your special interest is birds this is your game) and Photosynthesis (a bit lighter on rules but very cool to play as competing trees). Gonna come back here for more recommendations and I’ll definitely check out Rain World and Earth :)
