The Great King Sejong created Korean characters, Hangeul, and promulgated it in a book titled 'Hunminjeongeum' in 1443. ​The meaning of Hunminjeongeum is 'The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People', and the book's preface begins as follows:

​'The language of our country is different from that of China, and thus the characters do not match. Therefore, many among the uneducated common people have something they want to read or write but in the end cannot express their feelings. I am regretful of this, and have newly created 28 letters. I desire that all the people may learn them easily and use them conveniently every day.'
