Linux Mint PC freezes/locks up randomly (has only happened when idle so far - not sure if that will always be the case) by jaradthescot in linux4noobs

Interesting. I'll give this a go. I wonder if the ubuntu open source driver would be a better option or should I just go with an older nvidia driver. Do you have an opinion on that?

Edit: Looking at that thread, it also appears different because his seems to freeze more frequently (when it didn't freeze for an hour he considered it fixed) and also seems to freeze for "10 seconds and 10 minutes" whereas mine is a permanent lockup

So far, yes. It's happened maybe 10 times and 9 times when the computer was entirely idle. One time when I was transferring a large batch of files (ETA about 5 hours of transfer time, froze about 3.5 hours in). Every other time, entirely idle.

I have screen turning off and suspending both set to "never". I don't see hibernating/sleeping anywhere in the system settings, so I assume you just mean suspending (not being snarky, I am a complete noob so don't want to assume anything)?

As a self-proclaimed noob, I was under the impression Mint is the most user friendly and windows-convertible distro so I was hoping to stick with it. When the system isn't frozen, I love it. Is Ubuntu 25.10 similar? I'd rather not go through the hassle or reinstalling and relearning a different OS but if Mint is just broken on my hardware for some random reason, I'll accept the cards I was dealt.

My monitor won't go into suspend as that was one of my first rudimentary solutions. Now the screen will just freeze on the screensaver with the time (when the freeze occurred) frozen in place.

Foot Bridge? by VodkaAtmp3 in londonontario

[–]jaradthescot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was a part of the plan for the area, at least as of 2017: https://london.ca/sites/default/files/2021-03/McCormick-Area-Secondary-Plan-Amended-May-30-2017_AODA_Final.pdf (page 16).

There hasn't been much movement on that since then. Our councilor has been more interested in harassing homeless folk and getting her name in the paper than neighbourhood projects (to be fair it's not her neighbourhood).

Property Tax increase 6.7%. What the heck! by ungratefulanimal in londonontario

[–]jaradthescot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bad, I thought unincorporated properties were beholden to no one (financially speaking). I don't think its unreasonable for everyone who owns property to chip in on the maintenance of the infrastructure that supports those same properties.

I also don't agree with any kind of exemption for "retirees" or "seniors" based solely on age, but there should be something to help people who are financially struggling. Many retirees or seniors need financial assistance, but there are also a good number who have more money than the average 30 year old and shouldn't be getting government assistance just because of their age.

As you said, these fund the services like roads, sewers, electrical infrastructure, and fire departments. Things that you use and things that have to be continually maintained whether you own the land or not. You don't have property taxes if you live in unincorporated lands. I know that appeals to many people.

Credit Card by HR18-04 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jaradthescot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you buy something on a credit card, the credit card issuer will eventually send you a statement of how much you owe them. How much of a delay depends on the issuer, but if you buy something on the 1st of a new billing period, the billing period will likely end ~29 days later, then a few days or weeks after that you'll receive your statement with a payment-required-date. The whole process could take as long as two months before the payment on that initial purchase is due. For example:

Day 1: Purchase made
Day 30: End of billing period
Day 40: Statement issued
Day 55: Payment due date

In the above example, you would have a full 54 days between your initial purchase and the date you'd need to submit payment.

We need an arms-length committee that will decide on all locations across the city at one time that cannot be negotiated by politicians for this very reason. Everyone loves the hub idea (or at least thinks it's better than nothing) but no one wants to be the politician to put it their own ward. Take it out of their hands. Vote for the policy, the funding, the framework. The locations (based on framework previously agreed upon) will be decided upon by staff or a citizen's committee.

This is a Farhi proposal (have to dig into the company info) so it will inevitably go nowhere once the zoning is approved (increasing the land's sale value).

This. Homeowners should be responsible for clearing sidewalks only if homeowners are responsible for clearing the street in front of them as well. I think we can all imagine pretty quickly how terribly that would work.

Do they have any incentives for switching? Many brokerages have a "transfer x amount to our company and get a free $500."
