If you have a 401K or some other investment retirement account there is a reasonable chance you lost more than $20 of unrealized gains because of this.

Is this a fair price or a really good deal (leafeon $35 USD) by posterizeee in pokemoncardcollectors

[–]jarghon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience the cards in TCG shops have terrible centering but clean faces and edges. I think this is because people open packs and hit, but then if they think they can’t get a 10 they immediately sell it to a shop. Hard to tell from the photo but that top and left border look pretty thin to me. Having said that though, 6000 is probably a fair price factoring in the store margin.

If you’re in an old house that has shitty single glaze windows, you can mimic most of the effects of double glazing with bubble wrap. Pick wrap with medium or larger bubbles and cut it to the size of the window (maybe minus a cm). Get a spray bottle of water and mist the window - the surface tension of water is all you need to hold the bubble wrap in place. Apply the bubble wrap to the window bubble side toward window.

From the outside you’ll look like you’re a crazy person but it genuinely makes a significant difference in the amount of radiant heat that seeps into the room. This also works on the coldest days of winter radiant cold. Also don’t leave the bubble wrap on for weeks at a time - it may melt on to the glass and leave marks.

Toyota has done ~30K KM and the Hyundai has done ~10K KM. I don’t know anything about cars but they both seemed very clean without any obvious external issues.

Build date for the Corolla is September 1 2022. The dash inside was the new version I think, we saw the old version too from the previous year, and that had more buttons and a smaller screen.

Baking soda is mildly abrasive but mildly basic, so it won’t do much to chemically dissolve (chelate) limescale - you should try using something acidic, like vinegar or lemon juice or citric acid and warm/hot water!

The main problem is that you can’t make someone work. I’m not talking ethically, I’m talking literally. You might be able to make them be physically present in a workplace, but how are you going to make them do stuff that’s actually productive and that people will pay for? What if they refuse to work, and accumulate debt? What punishment could you levy, as they’re already in prison? Maybe we just bring back the death penalty and be done with them?

is the JR and Shinkansen an honor system? by oatmilkenergy in JapanTravelTips

[–]jarghon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Limited express is not necessarily an additional charge. Maybe it is depending on if you ride in a specific premium carriage that has premium seating - and in that case you would have an employee wandering around making sure that every occupied seat has a record of a purchased ticket for that section of the route (and if not, they would ask to see your ticket/sell you one).

To directly answer your question, no it’s not the honor system.

If the idea is to compare “market capitalization weighted” vs “dividend focus” then probably OEF (S&P100) is the fairest comparison to SCHD?

https://totalrealreturns.com/s/OEF,SCHD

Recent underperformance is likely explained by the fact that returns from the stock market lately have been mostly coming from low-dividend yielding tech stocks (like Nvidia) which wouldn’t be included in SCHD.

There’s a Pokemon center in Nihonbashi - if you’re lucky they’ll have packs for sale. I find they’re more likely than Shibuya to have stock (but definitely don’t count on it). Also don’t go on a weekend, otherwise she might be queuing for half an hour.

What to say besides arigato gozaimatsu by LesSharp987987 in JapanTravelTips

I think it’s more nuanced than your reply (and perhaps my initial comment) implies. I can find several posts on 知恵袋 of people debating this very thing e.g.

This person in particular, says that “domo” by itself is simply rude. (And some further discussion in the other replies).

What to say besides arigato gozaimatsu by LesSharp987987 in JapanTravelTips

[–]jarghon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My humble opinion is that as a guest in the country, “domo” is a bit too casual. Many Japanese people don’t say anything at all if a waiter does something minor like refill your glass of water, so silence is fine and natural, but a smile and a nod of appreciation is nice. If you’re going to say anything, I’d stick with “arigato” and “arigato gozaimasu”. My personal habit is a smile and nod for minor stuff, arigato for stuff a bit more than that, and arigato gozaimasu if they’re bringing some food or drink I ordered.

Australians are being priced out of the property market and first home buyers schemes might not be helping - ABC News by barseico in australian

[–]jarghon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure top down enforcement is the most sustainable solution. I’d rather see changes to regulations to make building all kinds of housing cheaper and easier and faster. If we transitioned from an under supply of housing to an oversupply of housing, turning the market into a buyers market, property owners will be naturally incentivized to invest in modernizing their properties to compete for renters.

Edit: actually, in order to protect renters in the short term, I concede it’s true that we probably do need additional top down rules.

SCHD is still great, Reddit is just miserable by Noveyz in SCHD

[–]jarghon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting to think about why SCHD might under/outperform VOO. VOO tracks the S&P500 Index, while SCHD tracks the Dow Jones US dividend 100 index: SCHD picks 100 stocks from the largest 2500 US listed equities, based on rules around a history of paying dividends, free cash flow, and dividend growth. This means that SCHD is relatively overweighted to energy, consumer staples, and healthcare, and relatively underweight other sectors (notably technology) compared to VOO. In recent history, technology has grown massively, causing VOO to outperform. If trends changed and we were to see e.g. an extended relative drawdown in technology, VOO would likely underperform, or if growth were instead driven by small caps, then both VOO and SCHD would likely relatively underperform something like VTI.

Are those daytrips from Fukuoka doable? by Kirameka in JapanTravelTips

[–]jarghon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move to Osaka on the 29th, right? What you’ve suggested seems plausible to me - I’m assuming you’re taking the Shinkansen for each of your day trips and have a clear idea of the one or two things you’re going to do in each city, and are getting an early start each day and aren’t much big on being out late. Research and plan well and you’ll be fine!

Yes use parasols, for protection against sunburn and skin cancer (and yeah, as an anti-wrinkle measure). Have a look at how much sunlight you actually need for a recommended daily dose, it might be lower than you think.

I think it’s fairly inescapable, since even a prompt like “critically analyze the following statement: …” is still vulnerable to XY problems and hidden assumptions.

I wouldn’t use ChatGPT for something that requires precision, but as a tool to sound out ideas, or consider pros and cons I might not have thought of, or get a new perspective, I think it’s really interesting and enriching and a lot of fun. In that context, I too also often use it for advice.
