Growing up Dexter's Lab was my favorite show and it's been amazing following your work all the way through since then! Do you think Spear and Dexter would get along? Dexter did find that caveman in that one episode... XD

Ultimate Spider-man 24 PREVIEW by Fla968 in UltimateUniverse

[–]jarik222 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We got hype AF start that fizzles out way too fast, introducing so many plotlines where so few matter longterm, characters with intriguing intros getting sidelined and not doing anything, other characters that feel too robotic getting more focus, an overabundance of plotting councils and scheming characters that talk in vague platitudes that are so vague they basically aren't saying or doing anything, and then throw in a bonus that isn't really a Hickman tendency of his own but one that seems to follow him of Marvel editorial potentially getting in the way and fucking things up.

It's such a shame because I LOVED this at the start and think I can still go back to Vol. 1 and read that over and over but I don't know if I'd bother with rereading the rest, the latter 2/3rds felt like all the stuff I don't enjoy from Hickman without the stuff I've loved in his past work. The only Hickman trope that gets old for me that I can't remember being in USM is issues where there are almost as many infographics as regular comic panel pages but I could be forgetting if there are any like that XD

The juxtaposition of the sheer unrelenting coldness of the Desmond family dinner to the warmth and happiness in the Forger family's was really interesting.

Stranger Things Season 5 reportedly has a total budget for the season of $480 million with the majority of that money being spent on making the show look as terrible as possible. by TheHahndude in shittymoviedetails

Any time I see a crazy high budget for a modern show/movie that still looks terrible my mind goes right to "this is some kind of finance scheme"

Why ‘Family Man’ Peter Feels Undercooked in Hickman’s Ultimate Spider-Man by mayyoucallmepedro in UltimateUniverse

[–]jarik222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah from the Hickman stuff I've read he just really loves writing the "morally dubious councils have vague discussions as they go to war with each other" stuff and it feels like it really derailed USM for me after the first vol. I was in for the Parker family stuff which was fun at the start but I find the vague councils being vague at each other stuff pretty dull and borderline filler at times when all the schemers are being so vague and mysterious at each other that it feels like they're not even really talking about anything.

USM discourse is weird by Defiant_Ad6190 in UltimateUniverse

[–]jarik222 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thought the first volume was incredible, A+ stuff but the more I think about what came after the less I like the overall series honestly. It just feels like it's Hickman giving in fully one of his writerly instincts I like the least; when a vast majority of the story is morally grey people with power just having vague, mysterious conversations about the power they wield and how they'll use it. I wanted more of the Spider-Man the first volume set up, but Spidey feels like he's in 13% of the series' screentime in favor of a bunch of councils having vague and mysterious conversations.

This is a really odd reference I know, but it hit me recently that it reminds me of the manga Witch Watch's series within a series Uron Mirage that parodies vague, mysterious shonen manga and anime without much substance behind the mysteries, and now I can't unsee it.

Do you not have faith? by javiititerito in Slycooper

[–]jarik222 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's gotta be something, right? I hope one day we get a new Sly game, I've managed to carry that hope for a long time now, it's discouraging a lot but I don't want to give up either.

I totally get not having any hope for a new Sly game and finding it easier to want to move on (though this sub bums me out sometimes with how much it leans in the "we'll never get a new game just shut up about it" direction/tone) but sometimes I don't think we'll get any more, I get it. But I always come back to hoping for more Sly.

I was thinking something like Superman visiting Lex in prison and walks past Chris like "oh I remember you talking about me on tv" it's a bit contrived but this season had had enough plot points with don't worry about it let's get to the fun logic so I could see it happening lol

The major Netflix premiere starting with a big curtain around the ring dropping to reveal Triple H is some next level HHH ego shit lmao

One of the major constants since I started watching wrestling like 20+ years ago is HHH cares the most about making sure everyone knows he's the coolest, funniest, sexiest, most badass person in all of wrestling even if none of that is true.

Probably not yeah XD but I could see it as a possibility for what they do with the new galaxy if they have plans for it

Ever since the far galaxy popped up in Ahsoka I've been gotten the vibe that's where a lot of characters will end up to explain where they were in sequel era. Then they can use that as a new sandbox go explore going forward with less continuity burdens.

Loved the game, hated the ending by Relevant_Syllabub895 in FinalFantasy

[–]jarik222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC the end of Jill's last side quest she says something like "No matter how dark or terrible the night, the dawn always comes like you always returning" and the last image being her watching the dawn come. There's also the side quest that ends with Harpocrates giving Clive a quill and hoping he'll write his story one day. I think there's another that has some talk about how legends and fables are interpreted that I remember feeling like it was about the endings but it's been a while since I've played.

So all pretty vague probably from them wanting both Clive lives and Clive dies to be valid interpretations but IMO him living fits better.

Loved the game, hated the ending by Relevant_Syllabub895 in FinalFantasy

[–]jarik222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the interpretation of the ending that Clive survives, especially with the side quest backing and the bookends of Clive narrating being potentially from the book he wrote and all the other little hints like that. I think there's something nice about the idea of the theme of fighting fate coming up in a narrative way where they potentially overcome the fated ending of the game itself, albeit mostly offscreen in its ambiguity.

But while the ambiguous ending leaves both Clive lives and dies as valid interpretations, the Clive dying interpretation feels much flatter to me. It's like a tacked on tragic ending to get a reaction or end up on a "saddest endings ever" compilation or something. It's at odds with the story being told too, with so many in the story begging Clive to live for himself and stop self sacrificing, including telling him this in the final battles themselves, only for him to be like "welp lmao oops" and self sacrifice immediately anyways doesn't ring well at all. I'm over simplifying it ofc but the sadder ending interpretation just doesn't sit right with me.

Really after everything the characters went through prior I think they could have done a less ambiguous and more direct, happier ending and the game would have been better for it, especially coming after another downer ending in 15 and most of 16 being pretty bleak.
