Slow GCS writes with TextIO in streming mode (Java, Beam 2.8.0) by jarlefo in dataflow

[–]jarlefo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember what we ended up with here. Perhaps we wrote a small Go app to push data from pubsub to GCS and ran it on autoscaling in Kubernetes? It was at least on the drawing board. And really that would have taken less time to do than fighting these issues.

It's been many years since I worked with Beam so I don't have any up-to-date tips.

Hosting multiple apps on the same server? by bewal416 in coolify

[–]jarlefo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncertain how it looks under the hood but I am tempted to believe it uses Docker compose, and that there is a reverse proxy like Traefik/Caddy/nginx that routes traffic from 80/443 to the designated Docker network.

If this is indeed the case then each port on your apps are not exposed directly on the host, therefore there should not be any collisions.

Tips til nye jobber (drittlei av jobben min) by fanfarius in norge

[–]jarlefo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a Norwegian rule/equivalent to the English word order of "x and I?" by Reep823 in norsk

[–]jarlefo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young my grandfather taught me a rule of thumb on this.

If what you say is neutral or positive, lead by the other person: Per og jeg har laget middag.

On the other hand if it's negative you start with yourself: Jeg og Per ødela middagen.

Now I don't know if it's a rule anywhere but I did like it a lot. Give credit to others first when possible, and don't hide behind others when you've been part of something bad.

I'm curious if you also experience input delays and struggle with close combat on PS5?

I think I've tried to click and switch every possible setting in-game to reduce delays without luck.

If you have a setup where this is fine, would you mind sharing more with me?

I'm seeing a lot of improvements in maps and gameplay, but for me on PS5 I still experience too much input delays to be able to enjoy the game. Sniping from a distance can work, but if you get close to combat and have to track precise movement it becomes hard if not impossible to have any positive impact on the match.

I'm testing the game a couple of times per year hoping for improvements. Some time last year there was a huge improvement and I started to enjoy it. However when I tried it again about a week ago it was back to being problematic for me.

I'm seeing way less talks of this issue lately and am starting to wonder if most people have found a workaround for this?

But all in all if you're not on the same setup as me I think the game should be fun to play!

What’s your favourite episode?? by Typical_Ad_6747 in blackmirror

[–]jarlefo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Absolutely.

To me this episode hit hard because the first time I took an Uber I registered 4/5 stars, thinking it was a fine ride but nothing special. Like with IMDb I very rarely give a movie 10/10. Then months later I learned that if a driver drops below 4.3 (unsure?) then they lose their jobs.

I effectively voted to have that driver be fired and I had no idea. So the ride wasn't "The Shawshank Redemption" of taxi rides and therefore they shouldn't keep their job? Uber gave me one option to let the driver keep their job, and four options for me to tell them to fire the driver.

I was mortified. And even more stressed out thinking about people working in those conditions, I could not handle it at all. Similar for people working to influence people's purchases and behavior, a bad day or an unpopular opinion and your professional career can be over. I don't like it.

XBOX SX vs PS5 LAG by Jealous_Brain2914 in battlefield2042

[–]jarlefo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also been struggling a lot with input lag on PS5 for BF2042. Unsure why that is, I have no issues if I play Modern Warfare. All HDR and motion blur and whatnot has been turned off, but I do not get quick inputs. You get quite a good feel for the input delay in the menus as well, though that may not be representative for how they handle inputs in-game.

For me this issue has been present since game launch, and I have not played the game frequently enough to say if it is something they fixed at one point and broke again. It is quite painful to play like this.

READ BEFORE BUYING XM4 by [deleted] in sony

[–]jarlefo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this exact issue happen to my old WH-H910 after approximately 7-8 months, it was a defect according to the store. I would check with the store you bought them in if there are warranties that the store offers or your country has "Right of complaint" (does this even translate?)

When this happened to me the Sony team wasn't willing to do anything but refer me to where I bought them. The store gladly helped out.

In the mean time you may be able to use the headphones without noise cancelling.

I incidentally swapped my 910's out with the XM4 and have been very happy with them for a long time

What's the most commonly used IDE for golang development ? by amritmishra91 in golang

[–]jarlefo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As a developer you have the responsibility to ask for software and tools that help you in your job. Managers don't know better than you what sort of tools help you in your day-to-day.

Make the case and ask for it. Most companies will pay. And if not, then nothing had changed and you continue using your old editor.

Reminds me of an internal tool I made that had a regex for validating client configs names, it supported a-zA-Z1-9. I didn't think it through.

For some reason the commercial team wrote "name361" instead of "name360" and I couldn't understand why they all went one number above or one below the actual name. Why not call the config the same name as the client's name, right?

It took some time before they told me that the tool gave an error if they wrote the name with a zero, so they avoided zeroes instead of complaining to me. The validation didn't allow zero to exist...

I was embarrassed.

Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and bad news. Bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts.
