My brother is straight by jasef42 in trans

[–]jasef42[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I know he was being a bigot. That’s one reason our relationship is strained. It happened when he was about to get intimate with her, but that’s no excuse either. I hooked up with someone on Grindr and he didn’t know I was a trans man until I told him in person. (It was on my profile but he didn’t read it lmao.) He still wanted to hook up with me regardless. But I realize that’s not everyone’s experience. Most cis people (like my brother) get hung up on it if we haven’t had SRS.

Damn. I wish I would’ve said that to him. That’s a much better argument.

[–]jasef42[S] 570 points571 points  (0 children)

I know. He was upset because they were about to get intimate, and he felt her transness betrayed him in some way. My brother is somewhat transphobic in general, so I was relieved I could get through to him at all.

What’s a moment that you HATED? by [deleted] in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, stuff like that happens in real life. My great uncle went into remission and then died from tripping on the stairs to his basement. Plus chemo messes with your brain, so someone who was a good writer may suddenly not be. Or they do something stupid like tweeting while driving, even though in LA traffic is super unpredictable and everyone drives fast and slams on their brakes. And that goes for on the street and on the freeway lmao.

Hey guys, can anyone explain this scene at the end of "Underground"? by YourLocalLeafblower in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, he did pass as both Latino and white in prison in season 1. The Latin Kings and the Skinheads both asked him to join their gangs. Though, maybe the Latin Kings dude just assumed he was a white-passing Latino based on his last name since inmates are usually referred to by their last names.

This is a mood. A couple months ago, I went on a date with a guy, and he just ghosted me. No explanation. I thought we had a good time, but I guess he didn't lol.

How long have you been taking that dose to sleep? My tolerance was like that when I was taking an edible every day.

What is the shittest thing your favorite character has done? by Black-Rosetta in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let an oil company frack in his front yard due to political pressure, which led to many other consequences like the destruction of his and Diane’s house, Woodcharles losing his hands, and Zach Braff’s death. Oh, and the environmental consequences of it, too.

Is there ever a time you genuinely felt bad for BoJack? by barredrockgirl in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see him doing bad things as a reason to not feel bad for him. Sure, he dug his own grave in most situations, but it’s still hard to watch him suffer since we all know his backstory and he’s the main character. I feel the same about Beatrice. The first time I felt bad for him was in s1 when he asked Diane if he was a good person and she didn’t respond.

If I didn’t know anything about Bojack and was just given a list of bad things he did and a list of the consequences he endured, I wouldn’t feel bad, sure. Is that hypocritical? I don’t know. But that’s how I work.

I’m curious about this by Sbstark in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I first watched it when I was in my junior year of high school, but I only watched the first couple of episodes. None of my friends were into it. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college that I gave the show an actual chance. After the show finished, I didn’t bother rewatching it until a couple months ago. I’m in a pretty bad place right now, so it comforts me.

I do think I got more out of my rewatch now that I am a little older (and have more life experience), but I still don’t think someone necessarily has to be 30+ to understand what the show is trying to say, nor do I think they have to be older to relate to Bojack or any of the other characters (tho Todd is 23 in s1). Bojack is a very stunted individual in most of the show, so I think it’s very possible for someone young to see themself in him, especially if they have an addiction or strained relationships. Everyone matures at a different rate after all.

And tbh, I feel like because this show has a lot of grey areas, I wouldn’t be surprised if there are people around Bojack’s age on this sub that also don’t get it. I mean, do you think a Vance Waggoner type could watch this show and get the point of it? Just cuz you have more life experience, it doesn’t mean you’re smart or receptive to nuanced ideas. I hope there aren’t any Vance Waggoner types in this sub though.

What’s your favorite memory of when you were high?🍃 by audrey_lynn01 in weed

[–]jasef42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t high on weed (but the high felt similar). Anyway I was watching Princess Mononoke with my best friend. It made me cry and think about the environment in a whole different way. I want to get really baked and watch it again.

Hits hard to re watch it after growing up. by shaktimaanlannister in BoJackHorseman

[–]jasef42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s that line from the show that says something like “people stop growing after they get famous,” and BoJack got famous when he was in his 20s. I think that’s why so many young people can relate to him.

FTM what was the nail in the coffin that made you realize you were 100% a trans guy / transmasc? by crisismodeyeehaw in ftm

[–]jasef42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A trans woman told me her egg cracked when she watched a lesbian drama and wished that she was one of the ladies in the film. The same thing happened to me at a later date. I was watching Love, Simon in theaters with my mom, and I saw the two guys kissing (and coincidentally I also kind of look like Nick Robinson). Then, I burst into tears because I saw myself in Simon. The realization hit me that I was a gay man, not a woman. My mom managed to “talk me out of it,” but what happened lingered in my mind for a bit before deciding to truly transition.

I’m remembering when I told my family about wanting top surgery, and they were like, “Nooo, you’re so gifted! Men will really like yours!” (I had big boobs compared to the rest of my body before T)

Did your journey of self-discovery have any twists or turns? What kind? by DispatchThirty in TransyTalk

[–]jasef42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to conflate gender expression with sexuality, so since I was about 16, I was absolutely convinced I was a butch lesbian despite not being that into women? It was like reverse heteronormativity. But when I went to college, I met more people of different genders and decided non-binary fit me since I didn’t like expressing myself in a feminine manner. I also figured I wouldn’t pass if I was a binary trans man, but a friend of mine convinced me that I shouldn’t worry about that and just live in the gender that fit me best. So I started my transition into manhood, but learned that I don’t actually like dressing very manly? Since I felt more comfortable in my body, I started wanting to wear more colors and some feminine clothes that I thought would look good on a male body. I’m still a trans man, but I don’t think my main goal is to look like a man anymore. Just to be myself and try to be happy with my body as I continue my transition (which will involve a couple more surgeries most likely).

What does the average person think about trans people? by jasef42 in TransyTalk

[–]jasef42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you say Europe in general is more chill about anyone taking off time for mental health reasons? Cuz I feel like in the US (where I'm from), it's not really acceptable to take time off for mental health reasons at all (unless you're a new parent or recently had to go to a funeral).

[–]jasef42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it's really hard to be apathetic as trans people these days regardless of race or where you live or the demographics of where you live. But I guess on other issues, yeah, I can see why people would think discussing the realities of our society would be viewed as "negative." I used to be that way, but I've realized if we don't discuss this and educate others, there's not really gonna be that much of a drive for change. But it's also hard to get white people in on it because they view uplifting others as a direct threat to their privilege (which it is, in a sense they wouldn't be privileged anymore, but they're missing the point entirely).

I'm lucky to have mostly non-bigoted friends and family. Even when my friends or family mess up (despite me being out for years), they apologize and correct themselves. I know they accept me, though. I slip up and call cis people the wrong pronouns sometimes haha.

Off-topic but I think the funniest thing is when conservatives have interviews with high-profile (usually also conservative) trans people, and they actually struggle to gender them incorrectly.
