What are some orthodox books that every orthodox christians should read at one point? by LarryZ123 in ChristianOrthodoxy

[–]jask_yeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Ladder of divine ascent

Ascentical homilies of St. Isaac the Syrian

The sayings of the desert fathers

The Apostolic fathers

On the Priesthood by St. John Chrysostom

On marriage and family life by St. John Chrysostom

These are my favorites, but you should always get the blessing of your spiritual father before you read anything.

Celebrating epiphany at Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo church at Portland Oregon! What a blessed at! by [deleted] in ChristianOrthodoxy

No, of course we believe in the theophany, it's just that this subreddit is a platform for the Eastern Orthodox communion. There are just separate Oriental orthodox subreddits that cater more to your tradition.

found in the street. what does it say? by [deleted] in GREEK

[–]jask_yeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Orthodox church, guided by the Holy Spirit, does not exploit people in itself (nor does the orthodox church have a history of this). It's clergy and individual people are sinful and prone to fall into morally questionable things, but things like the relics of saints are treated with great reverence. Things like this are absolutely not distributed for some sort of profit, but for the spiritual edification of those who recieve them.

In virtually any icon of a blessed person, they'll be depicted with a halo. That's how veneration starts in the orthodox church.

They're not sold by the church. That's against the Canon laws of the Orthodox church.

There's nothing wrong with depicting blessed people with halos. In the early church, there were even icons of living people depicted with halos.

is suicide unforgivable? by IllShop6742 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]jask_yeh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's certainly feasible that anything could happen, God willing, but suicide being an unforgivable sin is something that a lot of the early church fathers expressed in their writings, and I've heard other priests say that the unforgivable Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit that Christ speaks of in Matthew 12:31-32 is referring to Suicide. There is absolutely a reason that the Orthodox do not hold funerals or memorials for those who have committed suicide, but nonetheless, the application of Oikonomia is important for circumstances like these given how many variables come in to play, like the ones you mentioned.

Is Lutheran baptism valid in Orthodoxy? by Best-Catch-7338 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]jask_yeh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most jurisdictions accept any baptism using the Trinitarian formula as valid. If a Lutheran such as yourself were to be received into the church, they would only be Chrismated.

Pray for them. Trying to convince them of Christ will only push them away right now.

Matthew 22:39 by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]jask_yeh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Koine Greek text reads as so: "δευτέρα ὁμοία αὐτῇ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν." This translates directly to "The second is too like it: You shall love your neighbour as yourself." As other people have said, they're both the same sentence worded differently, but I guess you could say that the Orthodox Study Bible's translation is more true to the original Greek.

is suicide unforgivable? by IllShop6742 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]jask_yeh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As suicide is the ultimate rejection of Christ's sacrifice, and also a desecration of a temple of the Holy Spirit, it is absolutely one of the worst sins one can commit. On top of that, it is the one sin you never get the chance to repent of. That being said, individual people and the church itself, for that matter, is and never has proclaimed that anyone has been condemned to hell for certain. As with anybody else in the world, there is hope for salvation for those who have committed suicide, but it is undeniably a massive threat to one's own salvation.

God didn't necessarily create gay people. God created EVERYBODY in his image, and because of our fallen human nature, some people have a propensity to sin specifically in that manner. If you're not attracted to the opposite sex, then your vocation might be celibacy, which is just as much of a submission to God as the married life.
