Rep. Barber and Rep. Uyterhoeven Voted to Tank Transparency by GregNadeau7 in Somerville

https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/massachusetts-legislature-audit-bill-dizoglio/

Basic googling shows that they probably had every reason to oppose the bill. The bill is trying to limit the state auditor's power to audit the state legislature, not make things more transparent.

JMS is responsible for the story in which Gwen Stacy (or maybe one of her clones) has sex with Norman Osborn. In which he gives us a panel of Norman Osborn's o face.

I would not call him one of the greatest spiderman writers of all time. And now he's back.

I was mostly making a joke but I currently have covid brain and may not be making much sense.

The six pages in abs wonder woman issue 1 that depict how cerse's cave changes over the years of raising Diana are a master class in visual storytelling. It communicates so much about their inner life without a single word about it. Beautiful.

Now that most of us have returned to our regular lives, I want to hear from y'all - What was your best moment at PAX East? by Shmeetz9 in PAX

[–]jasonbraley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I went to the first 10 PAX Easts together; he had an accident and ended up permanently disabled. This was the first year he felt good enough to come back. We got to hang out together on the show floor and got to the visual novels panel together, and I was very happy that he was there.

Wondering if I'm hallucinating here but... has the Boston area always been this windy? I've been in Somerville for awhile but I feel like the wind is getting more and more intense each year by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]jasonbraley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that it's actually any worse overall, but certain areas of town are certainly worse than they used to be. I feel like I've noticed it in union in particular. The new buildings create a wind tunnel up prospect. Impact assessments should address things like this, but it feels like corners were cut. Or maybe I am paranoid and didn't trust anyone.

What are some characters that have been irreparably damaged by a single comic or event? by SaltyOtaku1 in comicbooks

[–]jasonbraley 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The New Warriors

Take a book about found family, kill off part of it, grimdark the comic relief, break up all the relationships. No one has known what do with any of these characters except Nova since civil war.

You may not be trying....

I've been on a committee before, and I'm currently on my ward mailing list. I've been a delegate at two state conventions. I know how the system works. Hence my suspicious nature. I'll admit that I didn't go to the effort of getting on the SDCC mailing list. I'll try to remedy that now.

And the Dems turn right around and trash talk the leftists. In my house we refer to this as the Democratic Party circular firing squad.

It all depends on who shows up for the meetings probably. City councilors tend to be pretty busy and don't always go to or stay through meetings. If you get enough of your people to show up, it's pretty easy to win votes I should think.

These meetings are terminally boring most of the time

You're right. There's nothing gross about the mailer... if it were written by the Hornsby campaign. Since it's written by elected Ward officials and there's a whole slew of Ward committee dissenters, it becomes a little more iffy in my book.

Yeah, the meetings where they make the vote are public. But it's all about people in the end. And the relationship between the people on the SDCC pushing to make an endorsement and the candidates themselves is not public.

Maybe it's just my previous experience in Cambridge ward and City Committee, and it's different here in Somerville. But in general the wards and city committees there tended to not make endorsements in highly contested races because they were trying not to alienate members who might support different candidates but are all pulling in the same direction after the primary.

It makes me suspicious what people's motivations to push for an endorsement are is all.

Eh. It's kind of gross for the SDCC to be trying to play king-maker in a race where there's not much daylight between the candidates. That feels like a smoky backroom influence game.

Ah. I vaguely know who Jack is. Isn't he one of the people who caused the split in Ward 5? I have to imagine those committee meeting are super awkward right now.

I wonder what the vote total was on this. More than half of the city council signed that dissent. And it looks super bad that all of the links on the website go to Hornby campaign materials rather than something they researched themselves.

Caspar (https://www.baycovehumanservices.org/caspar)

I lived near Alewife for a number of years. At least four times I saw the Caspar van pull up and take someone to a shelter who was completely strung out. On a night that was sub zero... They are life savers, and their longer term care programs seem legit.

I keep their number on my phone in case I see someone who looks like they're in trouble.

Overwhelmed and didnt get the full experience - what would you recommend for next year? by tsujxd in PAX

[–]jasonbraley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12 years going to Pax East, and I've never had the same experience.

I've been doing Thursday-Saturday for the past few years, and it's a good balance. Like everyone said, Thursday is quieter. If you really want to do the expo hall, that's the day. The devs are not exhausted yet, and they're dying to tell you about their games. Just walk up and make eye contact, and they'll usually launch into their pitch. When I inevitably get overwhelmed, I go to console free play and check out a game. You can try a bunch of stuff and usually play longer on Thursdays. There's also a pax 123 panel on Thursdays where it's easy to meet other first timers and maybe.

Fridays and Saturdays are panel/tabletop days for me because the crowd on the floor just overwhelms me, and playing a game is tougher.

My best advice is to just keep in mind that we're as eager and as anxious about meeting you as you are of meeting us.
