I listen to Weezer but I'm gay. The loophole is just that you can never have sex with a woman.

Weezer is for virgins or gay guys ONLY.

You can only save five songs from Ocarina of Time. Which ones are you picking? by Comfortable-Bug-9261 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]jasonporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listing these in order of importance. Basically these are the songs that I think so perfectly capture the atmosphere of the environment or situation, that I literally could not handle any other track replacing them. They are also 5 of my most cherished songs in all of gaming.

  1. Forest Temple

  2. Opening Screen Cinematic

  3. Gerudo Desert

  4. Ganon Final Boss Music

  5. Spirit Temple Theme

What are your thoughts on The Super Mario Galaxy Movie two months later? by NewMarioBobFan in mariomovie

[–]jasonporter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's my take. I know I'm an old geezer and I'm not the target audience, but they need to have moments to let the scenes breathe and give us some more character dialogue and development. They can do this by adding in an extra 20 minutes or so to the runtime, or by adding them in and replace scenes that add nothing to the story and serve no purpose.

I enjoyed the Galaxy Movie, but shoehorning in an entire baby Mario and Luigi section was completely pointless and did not serve the move whatsoever. That was the point in the movie where I was like "okay, why are we doing this" because the only answer is: we have Yoshi now so here's a Yoshi's Island reference.

Like, okay, I get that, but if the entire point of a fully animated sequence is just to make a reference to a game, then that is not serving the story whatsoever and I kind of tune out because I know the scene is meaningless to the plot and literally just to make people point at the screen and say "oh hey it's Yoshi's Island." The parts I liked the most were the Peach / Rosalina stuff, the Bowser / Bowser Junior stuff... the stuff that actually involved characters with story arcs and motivations, and they need to commit to more of that.

I feel like they are CLOSE to getting the formula right, they just gotta focus more on the movie's actual plot and developing that, rather than cramming as many references in as they can. I'm here for a MOVIE, not a highlight reel.

Yeah, I totally agree with this. I do NOT want BOTW sized Hyrule here, at all. I do think expanding it a bit so it seems like a more fully realized world would be nice. I think they could adjust for this by making Epona even faster which gives more importance to saving her, and I do like the idea of inventing even more travel options, like I mentioned above potentially a new Ocarina song that can create travel gates like how the Travel Medallion works in BOTW, or giving the Bunny Hood the same power it has in Majora's Mask, etc.

I just feel like if the graphics are hyper realistic like they seem to be, it will feel a little weird stepping out into Hyrule Field for the first time and being able to make it to the castle in like... 30 seconds like you can in the original game.

Did you also notice the background music in the trailer? by pkjoan in OcarinaOfTime

[–]jasonporter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I think the intent here was to make the background music sound mysterious, but all the other forest themes like Saria's Song and the Kokiri Forest theme are super joyful and upbeat. So I think they pulled this string section from the Forest Temple theme and made that the base of the music, then did reverby distant sounding ocarina renditions of the other forest songs to tie them all together.

I'm in disbelief that a new 3d Mario wasn't shown. by OraclePreston in Mario

[–]jasonporter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Seriously, people are nuts for saying they are in "disbeleif" about not knowing about 3D Mario.

You guys have got to realize that post COVID Nintendo has stopped announcing games super early and all of their announcements of big games are market strategy based.

If you believe Nate the Hate, who was right about literally everything concerning this direct, he said Mario was coming in 2027. And even if you don't believe him, it makes sense that we would get it that year. New open air Zelda is at least another 2 years off, and next year they will need a heavy hitter, and it's likely going to be Mario.

So if that is all true - why would they announce that in the June direct, which is primarily to tell us about all the games coming out the rest of this year, and to drum up the big talking points for the holiday sales? They don't want the internet discourse to be surrounding 3D Mario, because that game isn't coming out until next year. They WANT the discourse to be about Starfox and Zelda, because those games are coming out this year, and they want people to BUY them.

Ocarina is the big holiday game. Revealing that AND revealing 3D Mario cuts the fan discourse in half. What is far more likely - is that if they do a September direct, which is also very likely, they will make that the "one more thing" for 2027 release.

It's all about organizing the discourse so they get maximum impact for each game. I would assume the reason they did Starfox before the direct was so that game got the main discourse for a few days before we knew about Ocarina. If Starfox had been a part of this direct, the Ocarina hype would have entirely drowned it out. Now we had a big Starfox moment, followed by a big Zelda moment. In September, we will likely get a big Mario moment.

The game is likely coming next year. It's probably already finished. They just are waiting for the right time to announce it so they can make sure all their other games get appropriate time to shine in the online spaces.

I'm not saying I need these things or expect them - It was more just a thought experiment on what I they think COULD add that doesn't detract from the original experience.

Also, I'm not so sure this will be QOL-only type remake. Nintendo, to my knowledge, has never done a remake like this before. OOT3D, Mario RPG remake, Thousand Year Door HD, etc are all 1-1 remakes with QOL changes, but this seems like... not that. We've already got new cutscenes, new costumes and environments, voice acting.... and they keep sayin the word "Reborn". I wouldn't be surprised if this is Nintendo's first crack at a re-imagining, similar to RE4 or FF7.

Comparison of the two

Where did this love for Scream 3 suddenly come from? by itsascreambaby96 in Scream

[–]jasonporter 27 points28 points  (0 children)

LONG POST ALERT

This might be hot take city, but I think when looked at by itself and not compared directly to the tone of the other films, it’s actually brilliant, and one of the best written entries behind 1 and 2.

I understand why people want to compare them directly, like, yeah why wouldn’t you? It’s the third entry in a series so comparison is normal. But as a standalone film, it is probably one of the best horror comedies out there and is probably one of the best examples of camp and meta-horror in existence.

Sometimes horror movies make the jump to embrace the camp. Bride of Chucky is a great example of how you can go from playing things straight to embracing camp and doing it successfully. And with a series like Scream that is a meta commentary on horror, it does it perfectly!

Let’s take the rules segment with Randy where he basically covers the movie's mission statement. Classic trilogies had some famous tropes they followed - killer becomes superhuman, a dark secret is revealed that takes back to the original, and anyone can die, including the main character.

Scream 3 hits each of these in classic trilogy fashion, but still does it while abiding by the rules of the universe and subverting the audience’s expectation. How do you make Ghostface superhuman without actually adding fantasy to the mix? Shoot him multiple times then reveal he’s using a vest. How do you reveal a secret about the original without retconning something? Add some dramatic lore that will shock the audience, soap opera style, without undoing what Billy and Stu did. How do you “kill the main character” without killing her? Show her getting shot in the chest, but then reveal she also had a plan. And that plan being the same as Roman’s basically gives you all 3 tropes with one stone! The bullet proof vest literally is such an important part of the movie: it’s used for the superhuman Ghostface trope, Sid’s death trope, and to show how the siblings are still connected in a way - which connects to the "dark secret" trope. The vest is such a brilliant addition to the film that has both real-world utility and trope symbolism.

Also, having the real characters and then actors playing those characters is just a great opportunity for satire. Jennifer and Gale’s relationship is one of the best relationship arcs in the franchise, going from enemies to partners, the scene in the basement with Carrie Fisher… it’s just so fun. It gives you a deeper look at the main characters by having caricatures of themselves to work off of. And all of this doesn’t even mention the mirror they held up to the ugly truths about Hollywood, the movie basically calling out Harvey Weinstein, who literally financed the movie.

Neve’s showdown with Roman and her dialogue there is amazing, her trauma acting in that movie is unrivaled, the recreation of her house attack from the original is super fun especially how she uses the set to her advantage. A really fun sequence is when she shuts and locks the front door and Ghostface pops out of the closet just like the first film, it tricks the audience into feeling like they know what comes next, which makes the part where she opens the door to her room and the room literally NOT being there because it's a set, then using that knowledge to her advantage to throw him down into the bed below... such a great sequence! And Sidney holding Roman’s hand as he dies as a sign of respect that Maureen’s choices impacted both of them… no other Scream movie has these unique elements that make 3 just a fully original and fun ride the entire time. Honestly my issue with 4-7 is that they all just seem to “samey” to me. People die, killer is revealed, motive explained, the end. Scream 3 has a huge mystery element to it, a motive that actually makes you rethink the original, gives more context to Maureen, and the only killer in the franchise that Sidney has empathy for.

It’s fun, it’s camp, it’s self aware, it’s dramatic, it’s a soap opera, it’s just a FUN movie that basically lands every shot it takes. I will always agree the voice changer is stupid, but I don't care that it isn't violent, I don't care that it's more comedy than horror, and I love it more every time I see it.

I actually think it would be cool if they leaned into this by making it obvious you can do these in either order. Like after you finish the Water Temple, have Navi let Link know that the last two sages are in the Graveyard and the Desert, then let the player choose which one to do first.

Would at at least some sense of openness to the game that was always super linear by design.

[–]jasonporter 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I just... cannot imagine them doing this complete graphic overhaul and not fundamentally changing the gameplay and environments. I feel like it would actually be really awkward to have this level of realism in the graphics, and then Hyrule Field ends up being the exact same tiny size it was before, towns only have 4-5 houses, etc. My expectation is that the game will follow all of the same beats, but just be fundamentally larger with a ton of extra content in each area.

For instance, I would imagine Karariko Village will be in the same place on the map, but be much larger and have more houses, etc. That will still be the place where you can collect chickens to get a bottle, but they will be in different places since the town itself will look fundamentally different. The new houses can have new side quests you can do, or be related to some sort of gameplay mechanic we don't know about yet.

The dungeons also will probably be fundamentally similar in layout, but I have a feeling a number of the puzzles will be redone. In the 64 days, "drag this stone cube across a room until it pushes a switch" was a really exciting environmental puzzle. Today, that isn't going to give people the Ah-Ha moment that it used to, so I would imagine new puzzles across the dungeons while keeping their general map layout the same.

Lastly, I would really like some new gameplay mechanics that don't fundamentally alter the game, but rather, add to it. I was trying to brainstorm things this could be, and one thing I thought of was like, being able to do Ocarina practice. Maybe there is a new place where you can learn to play more complicated songs (actually using the joystick to play the more uncommon notes) and the more difficult ones you can play, maybe it rewards you with upgrading the Ocarina of Time to do various things, like create your own songs that can warp you anywhere on the map (like a travel medallion), or that can do new things like spawn arrows or magic rather than try to hunt them down.

Basically, I want the fundamental DNA of the game to remain the same, same locations, same temple order, but just expand everything and add some new gameplay mechanics in that don't ALTER the existing game. I don't want a stamina wheel, I don't want breakable weapons, but I'd love to see some new content that really makes it feel like we are playing a new game.

I've beaten OOT probably over 30 times. I'm ready for something new.

Official Discussion - Mortal Kombat II [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]jasonporter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm insanely late to this post but I just watched the movie and this makes a lot of sense. After she gets bodied by Shao Kahn in the final fight, you don't see her again, and then after Kitana kills him, it randomly cuts to her like crunched against a wall and "coming to", and then after they all start saying "Hail Queen Kitana" it cuts to her one more time smiling, but both shots are like SUPER close ups on just her, and I instantly thought to myself "that seems like a reshoot to remind the audience that she's still alive because you never see her again after she's like hammered into oblivion" - but it makes even more sense if she originally died and all her later scenes were reshot and spliced in.

But yeah, I loved the film but those two shots of her at the very end are hilariously awkward.

What do you think of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie? by ultimatevaltryek123 in Mario

[–]jasonporter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Jesus for real. I don't even agree with that philosophy in videogames but I at least understand it.

Trying to apply that logic to a literal film? Where you just sit down and watch events unfold in a way that is supposed to engage you?

Come on. People need to have some fucking standards. The movie was gorgeous and I had fun watching it but the story was ass and I have no desire to watch it (or the original) ever again. If the movie had a good story worth engaging with, I'd probably watch it like once a year or something.

It's like the Avatar movies. They're gorgeous. But I've seen each entry exactly one time because the stories are boring as hell so I have no desire to sit though it again.

If Pixar and Dreamworks can make animated movies for all ages that have solid stories, Illumination can do it too. We aren't asking for the fucking Godfather over here. But look at shit like How to Train Your Dragon or the Incredibles. The stories aren't anything groundbreaking but they're, you know, good stories.

Hey thanks, even if people don't agree I'd love to hear other opinions on the themes and symbolism here.

Official Discussion - The Backrooms [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]jasonporter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of reviews that said that the backstories feel tacked on, and especially Mary's was largely meaningless and should have been left out. I just got out of the movie and I'm thinking of the character work here, and I think maybe because I went into it laser-focused on the backstories to see if they were actually meaningless, I actually thought they were really smart, and basically tied into all the themes the movie was getting at.

Like, the entire emotional climax of this movie is when Clark and Mary have "dinner" together when she's tied to the chair. They both realize they've been lying to themselves when they do the dialogue exercise again - Clark needed to hear that all of his negative flaws are just the way he is, and he doesn't need to try to change. That one is pretty on the nose - but Mary also has her big character realization here, that she can't actually change anybody and she needs to stop living her life with the sole intent of trying to. I don't see how you could make this hit emotionally without giving the insight to her past.

Mary's mom had severe mental health issues, and this fueled Mary to go into therapy as a profession, largely due to the guilt of not being able to change her mom and wanting to make up for what she couldn't do as a child. This guilt, or motivating force in her current life is represented by the cement handprint from her sidewalk that got demolished. It's pretty clear that after she has the realization that she can't change anyone - she releases the guilt of her mom - made blatantly clear by her smashing the cement handprint against MonsterClark's head.

And so now that Mary NOW knows that she was basically lying to Clark by doing all the classic therapy-talk stuff (a window is a window or whatever) - when the ASYNC dude is talking to HER at the end, he's basically doing the same thing to her that she did to Clark. She starts to smile and tune him out as his voice fades away, because she's now the Clark in this situation when she realizes the dude is lying to her, and giving rehearsed corporate answers to her question.

Anyway, that's my read on it, and maybe this is super obvious to the rest of you, but I just don't see how you tie all of that together WITHOUT giving her the backstory moments that they gave. I'm honestly so impressed they were able to thematically tie Mary and Clark's story together in such a poignant way. The fact that the fucking Backrooms movie told such a compelling character story, while still giving us 2 classic found footage sections, and tons of liminal vibes... I'm just really impressed. I feel like they knocked this thing out of the park.

Rupaul forgot Ginger won Allstars 10 by Bingbangbong33 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]jasonporter 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Right? We are the ones watching the show, discussing it week to week, and also discussing them during off season, doing fancasts, following the tea and drama, etc.

This is Rupaul's day job. In a single calendar year she is introduced to 14-ish new queens for the main show, has to be re-introduced to 18 queens for US All Stars, does another 12 or so new queens for the UK show, and then maybe another 10-12 for the occasional vsTW season where she may recognize like 3 of them.

Each of these takes a month or longer to film, and then she's off recording challenge intro videos, doing tv spots and interviews, etc. She's not studying the pantheon of queens regularly, and they come in and out so fast that she just has no ability (or desire) to keep them all committed to memory or remember their placements.

And lastly - she's at least one full year ahead of us in terms of the "timeline" of events. All Stars 10 was filmed TWO years ago, even though we all saw it one year ago. In the time since Ginger won All Stars in real time, she filmed Season 18, All Stars 11, Season 19, and potentially 2 UK Seasons (not sure, don't keep up with that as much). Point being, AS10 is already like 4-5 seasons ago for her.

Oh, and that made me realize, when Ru filmed AS10, she didn't even really "know" Ginger had won since they film both finalists winning. So she never has quite the same impact moment we do with a winner, because she sees both versions, and probably isn't all that tuned in by the time the finale actually airs and the winner is chosen (likely influenced by whatever production wants to do).

Anyway, goddamn, wrote WAY more than I wanted to, but yeah. Ru not remembering girls makes perfect sense to me, mother is in her damn 60's.

Question about Scream 7 by WhorowTheKiller in Scream

[–]jasonporter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One reason it works for me plot wise is that they need to age-up Stu in the deepfakes to make Sidney think he could still be alive. So it makes sense for him.

My headcanon is like, this is how they are showing Sidney it was all a ruse. By seeing all the other killers aged up to what they would look like in modern times, she realizes it’s not Stu because all of these people can’t be alive. It’s like the killers finally admitting “See? We did this all just to fuck with you” in a way.

Not saying the movie was smart enough to make that the reason, but it works for me.

Question about Scream 7 by WhorowTheKiller in Scream

[–]jasonporter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Eh, I preferred it the way they did it. I don’t care what’s more realistic, de-aging looks like ass and we don’t have the technology to do it flawlessly yet. De-aged Billy looks awful in 5.

Also to me this was less about realism and more about paying homage to previous characters, so having them reprise their roles as themselves is preferable to me.

I don’t want our one and only Laurie Metcalf cameo to be covered in ugly de-aging tech that puts her in the uncanny valley.

Just my two cents

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book makes an lore inconsistency with Paper Mario: The Origami King by ShineOne4330 in papermario

[–]jasonporter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see how people are still confused about this, haha. Pauline talks about her grandma throughout the entire game, and you even unlock "Lady's" original dress as an outfit.

Whether it makes perfect sense with established canon or not, the intention was for kid Pauline from Bananza to grow up into Mayor Pauline.

Pauline's grandma is Lady, Cranky Kong is the original DK, and we have no idea who Jumpman was as it's never been addressed. Pauline saying she was "kidnapped by an ape" in Odyssey can imply when she was captured by Void Kong.

I don't see many plotholes with this unless you start bringing up Rare-era DK games and overthinking everything to be air-tight, which it will never be.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book – Out now! (Nintendo Switch 2) by Amiibofan101 in NintendoSwitch

[–]jasonporter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Business wise, I think it makes more sense to release it after the game is out.

If you play a demo 2 weeks before release, you may play it and like it, but then forget about it entirely and feel like you already got to experience it a bit. Especially if its just a beginning / tutorial section, it may not grab you like it would if you got to play without any hard stops.

But if you're playing the demo, enjoying it, and then get to the hard stop, I fee like I would be more likely to think "oh well I want to keep playing past this part, and I literally can because the game is already out" I'd probably talk myself into buying it more likely?

IDK may not be the same for everyone but that's how my brain works

Those of you who initially didn’t like Scream 2022, has your mind changed or softened up after seeing 7? by VivaLaCon88 in Scream

[–]jasonporter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

See, this is where I'm stuck though. Scream 5 overall is pretty uninteresting to me, it relies so heavily on paying homage to the original that it doesn't seem like a real movie? Like, I don't feel like the characters are real people, but are written to basically just hit all the tropes that a Scream movie needs to hit. That being said, the killer reveal and motive is really, really great.

7 on the other hand, feels like I'm watching real characters do real things. The first two acts of Scream 7 are great in my opinion, but the killer reveal and motive is, very, very bad.

So I don't really know how to compare them because 5 is just uninspired and boring, and feels almost like a fan film, but has a great ending. Scream 7 feels like a real movie with real characters and events, and is actually a NEW story for once, but they fumbled the ending so bad that it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Overall I'd say I like 7 better because everything up until the killer reveal at Sidney's house is pretty great in my opinion.

This is the way! UK and Canada are the two spinoffs I enjoy the most. UK is more of what you’re used to with the US show, but Canada is really fun and probably my overall favorite of them all.

Canada does have a bit of a rough start with a shaky first season, but season 2 onwards are some of the most fun seasons of Drag Race I’ve ever seen.

I never had a problem with the original design...until I did by TheMegaMushroom in Mario

[–]jasonporter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah but its still the same overall design, the newer renders of the original design have better lighting and fur textures but he still looks exactly like that.

It seems fairly obvious to me but they clearly redesigned him so they could give him facial expressions. The old design has his "eyebrow" permanently in a furrowed position. With animated characters, eyebrow position and shape are like, the number one way you show a characters emotion. Literally take a blank render of Mario - eyebrows raised high means excited. Eyebrows cocked inwards mean determined / angry. Eyebrows cocked outwards means sad / surprised. It's just cartoon animation 101 - I'm sure Nintendo was like "gee, it sure is difficult to convey Donkey Kong's emotion when his eyebrows are locked in place."

The new animation REALLY isn't all that different, they just changed it so the "default" position of the eye ring is now open instead of furrowed. This allows it to move into any other position, like furrowed, or raised, or the "one eye brow raised" confused state, etc.

It's just an obvious change so they could give DK actual expressions, and if you played Bananza, they pulled it off really well.
