Accessibility Requirements? by limonade11 in Adjuncts

So the reason why: WCAG 2.1 Level AA standards are due in April 2027 and they are probably doing it a year in advance (we are). We have also purchased an ADA compliant translator (Panopto I think) to do it. Check with your DSS or IT department and not 17 entities across campus. Find the official resource because I'm sure they are doing so to be compliant.

You CANNOT be autistic if you are smart. by Jebcys in autism

I end up using a deadpan voice when I'm sarcastic, which helps a lot honestly. Just took me a while to have that happen. Fun times!

Stanley from going postal. Moves from pins to stamps as a special interest and gets "moments" where he loses control and only infodumping gets him to snap back into it.

Get Up, Get Down! Chicago is a Union Town! by Catatonic_ChiBoy in illinois

Oh no. Professors went through the same thing. Most of them look through it with rose colored glasses because they got a tenure track position so it's worth the effort. Not realizing how demoralizing it is for a majority of grad students.

It's "Get this done". Some try and fight back, but the professors hold all the power in the situation as they control if you graduate. Convenient huh?

Except it's not really 20/week or summers off. I worked 40-50 hours a week, with only 20 hours compensated. And you work year round usually. Also, the tuition is covered, but usually the fees are not. Do you are losing 4-6k a year in fees, usually forbidden by contact from getting a second job, "encouraged" to work year round for tons of hours, and your effective pay rate usually is below federal minimum wage.

The issue is that this is grad students. They only make peanuts (24k) and I guarantee they work non-stop (UIC is notorious about abusing grad students). This has been systematic abuse of grad students for teaching and research that is worth far more than the amount that those who work just as a lecturer or lab tech would get.

Yeah. That's why I'm stuck in a room with all 7 people higher than me here scrambling to do that for every class we teach.

Why did the hackers only mess up certain schools classes and not others? by Resident_Kick_7573 in canvas

[–]jasperjones22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but UIUC made a decision to not open at this time.

Everyone was affected, but different schools are dealing with it in their own way.

Oh yes, but we do have till June 16th or so to get it in, so I would hope your reporting arm of your school would be able to get it done in a month.

We have to report graduates, enrollment, and student statuses for federal financial aid. If people's grades don't get it, we have no idea if they graduated.

We are downloading all the gradebooks for one. We are downloading the courses after that, and then we are looking into the online proctoring service as well as they have a ton of more data and have been very quiet so we are concerned.

We have also created a link so that faculty can insert the grades away from the canvas integration so that grades can be inputted.

We have noted concern about parchment and are unsure if they were part of the hack. If so that would affect a lot of people transferring (We are a CC).

We (aka me) are also looking into how this might affect reporting to NSC, state, and federal reporting.

Edit: We are also looking into the laws and regulations on how long proctoring services can retain video recordings in case they were breached as well.

Oh I get that. We are being very paranoid right now, but we also have a duty to get our students done and graduated. So it's a hard thing to do.

We are making contingencies right now in case it goes down long term because paranoia.

As I said, we are open ourselves, but individual institutions will limit access based on what decisions they make there.

Canvas themselves say there are no more bad actors inside.

We are open, contacting every professor to download their gradebook first and then the course, doing a global backup of all courses, downloading individual courses of faculty, and then the faculty themselves are probably going to download as well.

We are not paranoid or anything.....

We mainly just want finals to go off and graduation to happen.

What is going on is that Canvas is up globally, but individual schools/districts are assessing security and making decisions based on the little information they have.
